- Transmission removal, replacement, and installation. Learn how to remove a transmission so you can replace your clutch or flywheel, or so you can rebuild your transmission and install a new one in your car or truck.
In this video I show you the 10 simple steps on how to replace a transmission. I am doing this on a rear wheel drive 98 Mustang but the process is very similar on other rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, and even automatic cars and trucks. Each detailed step will allow you to learn how to remove a transmission yourself so you can replace a clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, or just swap transmissions.

This is why I drive automatics. Lol good work Chris. My dad and I replaced his clutch on a late 90s camaro. Took like 5 hours but we were a 33 year old with bad eyesight and a distracted 14 year old who just wanted a wataburger when we were done. Also didn't have a transmission jack. Dad was benchpressing the transmission while I shoved it forward to install. He knew what he was doing, but I lacked the skills to be of any real use. Wish I would have taken it all more seriously at that time and appreciated the time spent together. Thanks for the memories

The angles and editing on this video are second to none. I’m amazed at the quality and attention to detail especially with it being so short. Awesome job!
Honestly what amazes most about these videos after watching a few is how he gets the camera right where he’s explaining. It could be the smallest gap or tightest spot but he gets that camera there to show what he’s doing. Magic. Simply magic.

I had fun doing this a few years ago for my 94 Mazda B2300. Clutch went out, and I had barely any money so I did the whole job with a few harbor freight sockets, extensions, torque wrench, and jack stands. Everything else was by hand, I had to lay the transmission on my chest and knees to get it off and on. Even used the truck's jack to lift the truck because I didn't have a proper jack at the time. Really taught me how much can be done with simple hand tools, and I haven't been scared about any other repair job since then.
Laying it on your chest just killed me 💀

this guy is seriously the best. tutorial vids are usually harder to make than most youtube videos because they have to be thorough and detailed while also not being concise by showing the most important parts and not simply showing a 6 hour long video. chris fix has NEVER failed to deliver. and he always goes the extra mile to lay out the parts and explain what could go wrong and what could be different with different cars.
The mark of a good video maker is the inability to click away. I didn't intend on watching a 28 minute auto repair video at 1 am but that is what happened. Good video as always Chris!

I will likely never be able to do such complex repairs, but your videos have given me a more realistic understanding of how the components of my car,not only fit together, but how they work. At the very least, I am much more knowledgeable when talking to my mechanic. It's much harder to be taken advantage of if you have a better idea of how things work. The amount of work you put into your videos is obvious. Always well edited, no BS and makes it easy to understand. My manual transmission is much simpler on a 50yr old 4 speed so I don't have all the sensors to disconnect. I've also been told I don't have to drain any trans fluid. Taking the headers off of this car is gong to be a b*tch and I'm hoping I won't have to do it.
Thanks for your excellent presentation.
Just bought my new project mustang, same generation and I have to replace the Transmission and Intake Manifold, and then I realized ChrisFix has both of these replacement guides. Hey Chris, it’s Chris. I’ve never worked on cars nor do I plan on it, however I watch every single one of your videos and here’s why. It gives me knowledge of automobiles I ordinarily would not have. I then take that knowledge to the mechanics shop and I’m able to have conversations about my vehicle where I seem like I know what I’m talking about preventing me from being taken advantage of! Thank you for this! Just wanted to chime in and let you know that there is a tremendous amount of value in what you do even when some of your audience will never work on cars. Thanks buddy!

Great idea of getting a transmission jack. I took out a duel range hydromatic transmission from my 1955 Cadillac with a floor jack with a small piece of plywood and the transmission sure enough rolled off and pined me and a helper under the car. Those old transmissions are like an anchor for the passenger ship the Queen Mary.
His organization and clear tone makes these videos that much more worth it. I hope he’s living a happy life I think his videos absolutely amaze every single person that watches it, subscribed or not.
Every mechanic in the world: "You don't want to replace your transmission. It's a lost cause, and it is far too much work."

Saw this video and went out and bought this transmission jack and I must say, that was the fastest transmission change I’ve ever done. Good info and tips yu gave on this one 2000 mustang is what I WAS working on.
Just came across this video and fit to say, you do a "stellar" job outlining, explaining & performing the steps required to do this specific task, 5 stars and a big 👍 's up! I have yet to look at other videos but my son and I are removing the engine from his 2011 Mazdaspeed gen2 as we believe his #3 ring has failed, compression tested 155, the rest were 180. We've completely removed the front of the car and unattached/ disassembled everything we even think might be in the way of a clean lift and removal but have paused at removing the trans axles & clutch. We believe the clutch can be removed from the 5 bolts on the top where the manual clutch shifter mechanism enters the transmission. Then the 2 nuts on each end of the axles for removal. I've noted these steps to frame up where we're at with this task in hopes that you or one of your subscribers could comment, let us know if we're on track, what to keep an eye on or tell us, hold up do this instead... finding videos and good quality ones hasn't been productive. Thanks for your input in advance and again awesome video looking forward to others! Oh forgot to mention we've not yet drained the trans fluid but it's on the list. (Chris - New Brunswick, Canada)

Hey, start small. I never changed the oil myself before this summer and now I’ve done spark plugs, transmission fluid/filter, complete brake jobs, and others. I’ve already saved thousands of dollars because Christfix showed me how simple it was to do some car repairs. He’s good for seeing how to generally do something, and then refer to Haynes and KRplus videos on your own car.
@@XxJaguar22 how do you know when you have a problem with your vehicle and know when or how to change it?
@@budweiserjackdaniels6664 That's a hard question. I knew that my dad didn't take care of my car except he did faithfully change the oil. It had 140,000 miles, so I knew that it was due for multiple routine things. Check engine lights are also helpful because the car knows something is wrong and it is telling you. I bought a code reader for $70 and it was the best investment I've made. You can fix the vast majority of check engine lights for less than $100 and it would've cost that much for a mechanic to tell you what the problem is and not fix it.

Another perfect instructional video Chris! Always try it yourself, you have nothing to lose, whatever you're attempting to fix, it's broken anyway. As Chris mentioned, you have the satisfaction of doing your own repairs, and you saved a ton of money, and, you have new tools for later! Pretty much all of this is simple to do, just break it down into sub-categories. I took my 2010 M35-X to the Infiniti dealer, (slipping in 4th gear), they said I needed a new transmission installed for $8700! Right! Picked up a code reader, threw two codes, transmission control module was bad. Drained & dropped the pan and the C-module, checked the module circuit board...guess what, one of the flat line circuits was cracked! Cleaned and soldered a wire across, reinstalled, etcetera, work's perfect to this day, only cost me about $100 bucks with gasket and new synthetic transmission oil...got-a love it!
Hmm, it can always get more broken though, there's always something to lose

@@Duvall9042343 clutch still smooth like butter!
@@dfq101 Great job, glad to know.
“Since I have the transmission out, might as well replace the entire car.”
Been there done that!
You are an excellent teacher. Keep up the great work Chris!
I am impressed with the ability, knowledge, techniques and sequence that you utlize to show how to replace a transmission. None should have problems replacing a transmission even if it is his first time. Wao.
Best thing to watch in 2019 morning
Lol mechanic shops have to hate this guy.
lol
Lmao
I was saying the same 😂
Not at all. Nobody in their right mind is going to do this in their driveway.
mac daddy he did
Great camera angles on even the crammest of crammed spaces.
It's only from your videos that I finally learned to fix up my ride on my own, most other videos just left me confused on some steps and gave up in the end.
Thanks and that’s awesome! I’m glad the video is helpful!
That inside view was crazy bro I love and appreciate your videos. I’ve been subscribed for about 7 years now and have learned so much from you.
Thanks for the ongoing support!
First thing I'm doing in 2019 is watching this whole video. :D

Why hewo there, guess im not alone then
it's amazing how rusty exhausts can get in such a short period of time
Thats nothing. I used to have a 2011 dodge journey. That exhaust was looking like that the day I got it out the dealer..
Thats looks like his Old exhaust
the new one was stainless steel no?
@@Wootsand might be a bunch of caked on dirt. I thought it was stainless too
@@benjaminschmied7998 he is better than you by fixing cars dont tell that is nothing
you are a lifesaver. just the fact that you’re doing it on the old mustang, i have one too, is perfect!
I pray god continues to bless you my guy.. for real. You have quality videos, very informative and you inspire me to want to fix cars. I watched your videos on spark plugs and successfully changed them with all the tools needed and now i have a passion to learn more about fixing cars along with a boost of confidence. Continue doing your thing my guy🤙🏾
@chrisfix
Why the hell am I watching Chris remove his transmission at 2 am in the morning? Lol
Omar Delawer that’s exactly what I’m doing now too lol
Think of it as a ChrisFix bedtime story lol
ChrisFix That’s a good way to put it 😂

Ray Sno He installed a new exhaust system a little while ago

I’m halfway through this job! Thanks for the confidence!
Dude you are incredible. I have 2008 automatic V6 mustang. Feeling a little pulling in my transmission and some slow accelerations. Was dreading possible mechanic replacement. This video gives me hope to get a decent rebuild and do it myself. Thanks
Never put your shaft in dry 😎
Joshua Bowen Hahahahaha
I thought about the same thing.

I have no interest in replacing a transmission but I can't stop watching your videos, Chris. They are just so well done.
Chris thank you for this video and your clutch install video. I was able to change out my clutch, flywheel, etc thanks to this video on my 97 mustang gt. Thank you!
I want a “behind the scenes video”. I feel like that would be interesting
Yeaa
