At 14:15, Wenwu doesn't actually say "I've lived ten of your lifetimes". The direct translation is "I've eaten more salt than you have rice" which is something the elders say to their children to keep them in line, and somehow is even more badass
He also says "Mind your manners when speaking to me" before that, kinda like a "respect your elders" thing
It's a classic translation issue: Do you properly translate the words, or the intent?

I cool little detail is when Wenwu is getting his soul sucked out, his sould is dark colors, but after he gives the rings to shang chi, his soul has warmer, bright colors. Showing he's letting go and caring for his family. Such a great villian.

I dunno about that, I don't think he's letting go so much as he's realizing his ultimate failings as a father. It's why he didn't fight back, he was deluding himself right up until the end, that if he could just bring their mother back then everything would be okay because that was the last time things were good, when they were all together. It took right up to the end to break the delusion in seeing the demon, to which he resigns himself to the failings as a father, and leaves Shang Chi the only thing he can offer him now, the Ten Rings, his legacy of death and destruction. Symbolically, Xialing also gets the Ten Rings, in his organization.
That unresolved father issues I think is what can drive the emotional narrative of the sequel, as they both come to terms with a father they remember as both caring and brutal being just straight up killed before any catharsis or reconciliation. Plus it can leave an excuse for Leung to come back in flashback scenes as Xialing sorts through the Ten Rings organization history

I do love that they don't force Shang Chi and Katy into a romantic thing. Like, as you said you can tell they love each other but that it's also on a whole different level to romance, they really nail down that platonic friendship love that genuine good friends have
They got some good Phileo going on, instead of always pushing Eros Eros Eros. I agree that it's a very good thing that we could really stand to see more in media.

their friendship is in the main spotlight, which shows being friends is just as deep as being lovers. Like hawkeye and black widow
As someone who loves my platonic bestie who just happens to a be a guy, they got that vibe down!
Missed win: how Shang-Chi has to use the fighting styles of his father and his mother together in order to defeat the Dweller in Darkness, demonstrating not only what he has learned from both of his parents, but also that he has reconciled these two sides of himself and embraced where he comes from. A great piece of visual storytelling that completes his arc, and I can't believe nobody talks about it.
Second missed win: Wenwu giving Shang-Chi the rings as an act of self-sacrifice. We know they're the reason he is immortal, so him giving up the rings not only seals his fate but also gives his son a fighting chance. He does in his death what he failed to do in life: put his children first. It's a great conclusion to his arc.
It’s actually kinda interesting how in retrospect it feels like the trailers downplayed the movie cause I walked away liking it a lot more than I thought I would

There are so many times I wish I had a neural download for languages and this was one of them. When watching subtitles (or reading translations) I always know there are subtleties I'm missing out on; it makes me wish I could know what's being said without the subtitles.
This is one reason I still haven’t watched Squid Games. Proper LITERAL translations, please! Make me research the phrasings!
Why the hell did Marvel change the translation of that? It's not like the idiom was not self explanatory.

Okay but CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE SCORE when the dragon comes out of the lake, and the way the clappers GO SO HARD while Shang-Chi is fighting Death Dealer? The music for this film is just incredible and I would have loved a few more score wins. Such a fantastic blend of traditional Chinese musical motifs with a big cinema epic score.
And the fact that the mom and dad's themes combine to create Shang-Chi's theme!
that is what I loved about this film just the ethereal music and the fact that a marvel movie has a sort of mystical magic to it compared to their other films its very inspirational
The score in this movie is absolutely incredible. I will never get over the way that Shang-Chi’s theme The Light and the Dark blends his mother’s peaceful Ta-Lo theme and his father’s menacing Ten Rings theme into something triumphant and far greater than the sum of its parts.
14:18 Fun fact that line actually translates to “I’ve eaten more salt than you’ve eaten rice” it’s a “common” line adults or elderlies use to say I’m older so I know more than you and you should respect me. I laughed so much at that when I heard it in the movie. Really happy marvel did their homework to make the Chinese sounds local.

@@oohshaohan8976 Yes, different countries or languages have different sayings for the same intended meaning. So the subtitles should express the intended idea more than just be a literal translation.

@@TorIverWilhelmsen Then again, it wouldn't be too difficult to understand that line while never having heard it before. "I've eaten more salt than you've eaten rice" just sounds like a relatively normal phrase to imply that one is older than another.
3:52 One thing I especially liked about this movie: The first modern-day fight scene, involving a lot of environment usage and slapstick humor, begins with Shang Chi saying "I don't want any trouble". Definitely an intentional homage.
I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned that the choreographer was Brad Allen, a protégé of Jackie Chan and the short fighter from Gorgeous. Allen died after Shang Chi was made, which sucks a lot.

Shang-Chi is so underrated. The action, the visual, the characters, the villain, music soundtrack. They are all so good.
Couple things I noticed:
- When Shang Chi is fighting his dad with the rings they have a tendency to float around him when he's standing still, and follow him while he moves. Whereas with Wenwu, he keeps them locked to his arms or forces them out forward. Reflects the balance vs. one-sided willpower dynamic.
- When the dragon swims around all the paper lanterns at the end, it swims around them making the yin-yang symbol and after it does so the laterns are all much closer together, as if it was gathering them up
I'm so glad you mentioned Shang-Chi and Katy just being loving friends at the end. I thought I was the only one who saw it like that. I praised this movie so much for not forcing the male and female lead into an unnecessary relationship. Men and women can be all platonic friends and I love this movie so much for keeping them as JUST friends
They may develope their relationship into romantic territory in future films (MiGhT), but I totally agree that exploring that possibilty was not a realistic priority in the breadth and scope of this movie.
It's just weird that people act like this is a new dynamic in the MCU but we've already gotten earned platonic affection out of a male and female lead with the progression of Steve and Nat's friendship between CATWS and CACW. We also got that between Nat and Clint, technically, but that one was just a pre-established relationship that doesn't really develop at all.
@@hiimchrisj I agreed to a certain amount. But let's be honest. Hawkeye and Black Widow were never the focus of the movie where other heros like Iron Man and Captain America starred. Also Clint is happily married so a romantic relationship between him and Black Widow was never going to happen. And for the friendship of Cap and Romanov we have to remember how Cap was presented in his own stand-alone movie "The First Avenger". Steve was shown to be a pretty shy guy who didn't know how to talk to a woman. Dating wasn't his top priority and he even said he was waiting for the right partner to dance with which turned out to be Peggy Carter (female lead btw). During the events of The Winter Soldier Peggy is still alive, Steve hasn't thawed out for that long and still holds a lot of feelings for her even if she's an old woman with dementia now. And during Civil War AFTER Peggy died he hits on her niece Sharon. Natasha doesn't see herself as someone you would date and therefore doesn't make any serious approaches towards Steve unlike she later does with Bruce Banner. So she sees her relationship to Steve as completely platonic and it wasn't even a friendship at first until Steve told her that he wants her to be a friend for him.
So Shang-Chi is actually the first Marvel movie that doesn't force it's male and female lead into a relationship (except for Nick Fury and Captain Marvel).
I mean... Let's take a look at the movies and the couples that formed:
Tony Stark and Pepper Potts - > married
Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter - > romance
Thor and Jane Foster - > dated for a while
Peter Quill and Gamora - > dating
Scott Lang and Hope VanDyne - > dating
Dr. Strange and Christine - > off-screen relationship but still feelings involved (even though Christine isn't the female lead)
Black Panther and Nakia - > romance (the female lead would be Shuri but they're brother and sister so that won't happen outside of Alabama)
Wanda and Vision - > dated
Even Loki and the female version of himself had feelings for each other
I swear I was so relieved when they didn't suddenly kiss in the end.
It's mostly because Disney doesn't do functional romantic relationships.
I loved Katy and Shang’s friendship. Often times in movies when a guy has a best girl friend that he grew up with, he falls in love with her. Even though the movie does play around with the will-they, won’t-they, overall they still remain friends above all else.
I CAN’T be the only one who thought Katy had more chemistry with his sister…

I adore this movie. One of my favorite things about it is that Sean and Katy continue being valet drivers , singing karaoke but still saving the world. The point is that they were never losers just because they didn’t pursue a career. That’s a rare message in a comedy action movie, and I love it. I’m not a doctor, lawyer, architect, but I enjoy my job and have a life afterwards. That’s not being a loser!
Tony Leung really killed it with his performance. I'm always in awe of how he uses his subtle facial expressions and his eyes to convey emotions in all his films. My favorite film starring him has always been Internal Affairs. The very same film that The Departed was based upon and helped Martin Scorsese win Best Director at Oscars.

Another cool detail I found the second time watching it was that Wenwu says his wife was the only one to call him by his real name. The Dweller in Darkness only calls him by a few pet names but never by his real name.

Also, The Voice says “Save meeee” in Chinese “in the wife’s voice” but the tone is about as sincere as Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka saying “No, kid, come back, don’t provoke the squirrels” if you know what I mean.
The "Let me out" transitioning from his wife's voice to a horrifying demon from hell gets me every time. Can you imagine the terrible realisation that you just doomed your children to die after they tried to stop you?
The reason the choreography reminds you of Jackie Chan is because former members of his stunt team worked on this film! The amazing influence & legacy of Jackie Chan 🙏🏻
This movie is proof that live-action anime done right is possible. It plays out much like a shonen fight, minus the screaming. The choreography and over-the-top powers while still retaining a sense of grounded-ness is a staple of the genre. It even has flashbacks.
12:45 i love that the lady next to Katy was smiling at her celebration. They probably thought that they had a similar attitude towards their first archery lessons and love that Katy was expressing her shared joy for it.

Can I just say how much I love seeing movies that take inspiration from other cultures? Like I'm just another straight white dude from America, but it's so much more interesting seeing big-ticket films like this one and Black Panther that clearly take inspiration from cultures and mythologies outside of Greece and maybe the Norse for the five thousandth time. I feel like we don't get enough exposure to other cultures in terms of folklore, myths and legends. Like when we left the theater for this movie, I remember my teenage younger brother commenting "wow, it was so weird that they made a dragon that flew without any wings". Like yeah, wingless dragons are staples of Chinese folklore, but it feels like all we see in Hollywood are the western-style massive lizards with four legs and two wings. Anyway, I just really like seeing the clear influences from non-western cultures, and I hope Marvel continues to do more like this.

Im so glad to see a comment like this!! As a Chinese person I really loved the chinese elements in this film too and just love that people are appreciating it! The wuxia elements were sooo *chefs kiss* and set designs, costumes, creatures designs were all pretty great, and even when they were more on the inspired side it never felt like a silly chinese costume (ehem Mulan remake). I just lovee this movie aaa
(that being said there were definitely weird home-is-where-you-belong/go-back-to-where-you-REALLY-came-from undertones to this film that feels horrible in the film's Asian American context. There's a great yt video about this and I'll link it if anyone's interested)
Bruh you need to tell me where I can find those norse mythology movies then, because all I can find is Thor from Marvel, and that might just be the worst representation of norse mythology EVER.
@@SagaDraws The best one I can think of is Vikings which isn't specifically about Norse mythology, but is pretty accurate with regards to actual history (bar a few exaggerations). Great show. And the most recent God Of War games are good as well. It's weird to think that mythology outside of Greek/Roman is so vastly unexplored in general entertainment though. It's a VAST pool of inspiration.

The best villain is one that feels human. Wenwu's fall back into old habits could've been stopped, if his in-laws let him move into Ta Lo, or if the Iron Gang let bygones be bygones, as for the whole thing with him trying to revive Li, she could've told him, "Honey, if I die, and you hear me speaking to you, don't listen to that voice. That's the Dweller in Darkness, a being who impersonates lost loved ones to get people to do their bidding."
But then there would be no movie. But yeah, he let grief consume him and instead of trying to seek mental help, he feel back into his old ways
this film meant so much to me when i went in to watch it in the cinema. i’m chinese, but born and raised in europe, so seeing such a massive blockbuster film focusing so much on parts of chinese culture while weaving it all together with classic english speaking ideals and tropes felt like such a breath of fresh air to me. it felt like my two cultures mixing on the big screen. plus, this was the first western film both of my parents were hyped about haha. my mom was understandably super excited to see tony leung chiu-wai
Morris is actually based on a Chinese mythological beast called a “hundun” which are usually interpreted as fiendish beings that cause chaos, and is one of the “four perils”, four malevolent beings in Chinese myth
They're fiendishly cute is what they are!
But seriously I appreciate the mythology.
As a mythical creature nerd, I absolutely loved they added actual Chinese mythical creatures, and didn't make things up or added mythical creatures from other Asian cultures. The moment I saw the qilin I knew they'd done their homework.
Plus I liked in general how they brought them to life. I adored how fluffy the hunduns looked, and how majestic and fierce, yet very huggable the shishi were.
So that's why his design felt so familiar somehow!

I love how the MCU is starting to get as extensive as the comics, multiple separate, independent, ongoing movie franchises and TV shows that sometimes crossover but no longer depend on said crossovers
I feel like they’ve been doing that since Iron Man 3
I don't think it ever depended on crossovers. If anything it's getting more like the comics where you have to know a little about what's happening in one franchise to understand parts of what's going on in another. For example, if you were to just start with Homecoming, you wouldn't know what group Peter is trying to join, why a billionaire has given him a high tech suit, or where the villain got the alien tech from. Even though that's the first MCU Spider-Man movie, you have to see both the first Avengers and Captain America 3 to understand everything.
@@hunterlawrence3573 I don't think homecoming is a good example for that since it's a main line MCU sequel, I think a better example of this would b Shang-Chi since you don't need to have watched any of the MCU before it to understand the plot, but it definitely adds to the experience, since you'll catch details like the extremis soldier vs the black widow

The fight scenes were probably one of my favorite parts of this movie. I was constantly blown away every time I was watching a fight scene and they didn’t disappoint.
A detail I noticed is when Wenwu is in control of the Rings, the energy is chaotic and thrashing almost as if it’s the representation of the evil inside him while Shang-Chi’s energy is more fluid and calm as if it represents the goodness in him
I'm surprised there wasn't a win for Wenwu's mournful/loving expression when he passes the rings to Shang-Chi.

It's alright if you didn't know this, but I'll add one with this Fun Fact: Shang and Mattias (Razorfist) are canonically brothers, since Wenwu adopted Mattias after Shang left. Wholesome.
There was definitely some friction between Mattias and Xialing before she ran away. She intentionally took Razorfist's car to needle him.

One of my favorite details in the movie is that, when they arrive in Ta Lo, Xialing briefly wears the green outfit her mother fought in during the prologue.
Is it just me, or did the logo of the Ten Rings change when Xialing took over? Also, whoever cast this movie deserves a big win. Tony Leung has long been leery of Hollywood for understandable reasons, considering it’s history with Asian actors. But the fact they got him to be in a Marvel movie? That is insane.
7:24 That is actually what made Jackie movies as great as they were because he took hits here and there. Jackie did take a hit here and there which not only humanized him bit also is how actual fights go regardless of training and practice in general.
Hell, even Batman got his fair share of punches.
Wenwu's character is still the best part of this movie for me. His character motivation is honestly one of the saddest of any Marvel film thus far and Tony Leung sells the moment of realization of his failure at the end, and the montage of Shang Chi growing up still gets me :(
My spouse and I both felt that Tony Leung stole every scene he was in. Moreover, we were so impressed at how much he can convey with only facial expressions - so many scenes where he doesn't say a word but you can read on his face a whole monologue being played out. I'm glad that the "hint of pride" got called out in the video, that was a perfect example - it is definitely there, while he is still fighting as hard as he can to win and that is ALSO clearly expressed.
I absolutely loved this performance, so much depth and so much said by body language and facial expressions.
One of my favorite things about the Ta Lo is that you can question “how do they restock their weapons and armor when it gets damaged? I don’t see a dragon around.” But it leaves it ambiguous enough that the great protector probably has a good place to shed their scales for them to use.

Can we also talk about the score to this film?! Like at the end, Shang-Chi’s theme becomes a combination of both Wenwu’s and Li’s themes. He’s able to carry on the best of his father’s and mother’s legacy. Such a great score. 🙌🏼

CinemaSins is doing a thing and that's fine. They know what they're doing, they're poking fun above all. But I think people have started to think that's how you critique and watch movies. Like their audience grow an instinct to 'ding' things, thinking that's film critique.

Every time I watch a CinemaWins video, I’m reminded about how glad I am to have found this channel after first seeing a few CinemaSins videos
It’s so refreshing and satisfying to find and realize all the good in the bad. Compared to only reiterating and focusing on the bad in the bad, hiding within the narrow mindedness that is human nature.
It’s a perfect translation to every real life scenario as well

I love how the gang that killed Shang Chi's mom was the Iron Gang. Gave Wenwu a reason to hate something with Iron in the name
I really love the detail of the Rings’ power being a warm orange for Shang Chi and cold blue being his father. It reflects the Orange power of the Soul stone and this might be saying that Shang is a pure soul no matter what he has done.
Also, as the Dweller in Darkness eats the souls and transfers them into raw power. I.e., the purple energy of the Power stone.
Cool elements that tie the MCU together through color!
As an Asian, when Shang-chi said :"Mom was dead, and we needed you. But you chose those damn rings over us" gets me every time.
Shang Chi was such a great movie so glad we're getting more representation in the MCU
A genuinely fun, interesting, and all around good Marvel movie.
Also, I can't believe Trevor Slattery (The guy who acted as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3) appeared while the "Real Mandarin" existed in this movie. XD

My favorite part in this movie was when he killed the Dweller in Darkness because it was a true culmination of him becoming both his mother and father. It's not just that he used their tools (mother's magic and father's rings) but their styles too. The slow, open handed style to guide the rings to where they need to be then the quick, close handed and very brutal motion to execute the move. Literally combining their styles of combat into something cohesive it was so awesome
The line about living ten lifetimes is an approximation of sentiment, at best. The line goes more like, “Put more respect on it when you address me, child. I’ve eaten more salt in my lifetime than you’ve eaten rice.” That’s a frickin’ awesome line. There are so many lines that are legit witty, and many are more beautiful and layered than the translations provided. Their brother/sister fight had some really funny lines, but they replaced them in the subtitles. As a first gen Asian American who grew up speaking and hearing Mandarin Chinese at home, and who feels this movie so hard, I hope Marvel does better with the subtitles in the future. ❤️
Shang-Chi was fun, but really stoked for the EGA No Way Home.

21:05 I'm not entirely sure they rewrote the Ten Rings from Iron Man 1. Doing the math, Shang-Chi was sent on his first/last/only hit until a couple years later, so the Ten Rings were active then. There is actually a deleted scene where Wenwu mentions Raza, the bald Ten Rings Leader/Boss from Iron Man. The Fake Ten Rings was specific to AIM's coverup of their experiments, to take advantage of the accidental bombings to encourage fear and get closer to the White House.
Also in the movie Wenwu is actually seen watching footage of the Ten Rings kidnapping Tony in Iron Man 1

Hmmm, I find it hard to agree, although it could've been a splinter cell from the real Ten Rings. Ying Li was killed when Shang-Chi was seven, which would've been in 2008 since he was apparently born in 1999. Tony was captured by the Ten Rings in 2009, only a year after Ying Li's death. And if we're going by those dates, Shang-Chi's mission would've been in 2013, the same year Tony was dealing with the fake Ten Rings, long after Afghanistan.
I do think that Wenwu did NOT order for Tony to be captured or have any connection to Tony's capture other than his organization being the one to do it because the timing between Ying Li's death and Tony's capture is so close. At that point Wenwu would've been more focused on rebuilding his organization and getting revenge on the gang who killed his wife. The argument could be made that Wenwu might need weapons and supplies and thus Tony's help to complete such a task, but Wenwu has shown himself to operate with subtlety and within the shadows in the modern age, and taking a high-profile American arms manufacturer prisoner would, in my opinion, only serve to cause global chaos. (It's true that Stane would take over Stark Industries in that case, but Tony going missing would still get the public's attention.) I find it more likely that he would do business with Tony, maybe through fictional accounts, so as to not draw attention to himself. If Wenwu really was reviewing the footage of Tony's capture during the movie, that's an oddly long time between then and now for him to first watch it just then; it's possible he didn't get the footage right away but also has seen it a couple times.
This is all just my reasoning based on the information I have, so take it how you will XD
Also, remember they released the Marvel One Shot "Hail to the King" that served as a mini-epilogue to Iron Man 3 that details what happened to Trevor and introduces the real Mandarin.
here's a win i recently noticed: when the gray dragon is calling through the gate one last time before breaking out and both wenwu and shaun are backing away, wenmu is actually walking towards his son, in a diagonal line and he only stops once shaun starts walking backward toward him. like he still instinctively was going forward to pull his son back from the danger. love it

This was the first MCU movie my father was able to watch all the way through. He usually falls asleep when he tries to watch any other Marvel films so this one was special for me. Tony Leung was a big selling point for him
My sister hates most MCU films but she cane into the room while this was on and ended up sitting there and loving it

A thing I like in the fight scene between Shang chi and when wu was whenever whenwu uses the rings they shake the screen and he’s grounded to the ground. While when Shang uses them he’s almost Weightless and has finesse with his movements. Another great contrast with visual story telling

So, I actually loved the Trevor twist in IM3. I feel it totally works as a statement of how we tend to "manufacture" our own villains (much like Tony says he creates his own demons), but it works even better on a meta level. Fans who were so excited about a depiction of the "real" Mandarin (played by English actor Ben Kingsley, which they knew going into the movie) like to claim the trailers lied to them by setting up this expectation of Kingsley's character being a serious threat. This is a response to the trailer's mostly featuring the Mandarin's terrorist videos, which some fans will claim made him look intimidating and "serious". They apparently miss the part when the film itself points out that these videos are meant to be a mix of different styles brought together SPECIFICALLY to make up the most frightening possible image of a foreign threat. The scariest "non-democrat, non-American, non-white" this corporation could come up with in order to stir up panic.
And then fans failed to see the irony when they rant and rave about being cheated out on a "real" depiction of the mandarin.
Before I'd seen it, I worried Shang-Chi would undercut all that fantastic messaging by trying to give us a real Mandarin who fell into the same traps that IM3 mocked. I feel they managed to avoid that by giving him so much character and making him empathetic instead of simply another evil mastermind, and with a lot of background and characterization. It doesn't totally destroy the messaging of the other movie with still being it's own thing.

The messaging doesn't really change the fact that not having a Mandarin of it's own was undercutting Comic fans and the Mandarin there. Yes it all worked out because we have this movie, but at the time, it was hardly as great idea to use a NAMED villain for another for actual fans

What did you want? A flash at the end that showed the character for one second? That offered no development or character? Just so we could all know that, actually, foreigners ARE evil! No, the movie gave us The Mandarin the best way it could, considering it's themes and the fact that it was Tony's movie (the last of the trilogy was never going to go out of its way to make sure the villain came off as entirely well rounded and heavily focused on the way Shang-Chi's first film allowed). It used it as a sort of scare tactic about the "evil foreigner", and honestly I think that was the better route.
Again, you say they left you without a "real" mandarin as if he isn't constantly changing in the comics, but if the twist hadn't been there and it had just been Ben Kingsley all along, would you really have been fine with it? You would be fine with a character whose only real defining traits through the years are "mostly usually evil" and "Chinese except when he's a dragon" being played by Ben Kingsley?

I really love this movie. I love how complex and multi-facetted the characters are. Even Aquafina as Katie wasn't overly annoying. In fact, she was just as kick-ass as Shang-Chi, just in different ways. Her amazing driving skills helped him out so many times. The movie is also genuinely funny a lot of the times, even during the otherwise tense actions scenes. You're right about it being very Jackie Chan-ish, and, well, as they say, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." It's really hard to hate Wen-wu here, too, as, yeah, he's a terrible man, but, as my mom said, "He had everything he ever wanted, but he never got the one thing he *needed* until he met her." And, yeah, for a time, love really did redeem him.
Can I just say, I enjoy this channel so much. Just taking some joy in movies rather than tearing them down for minor nitpicks. I feel like you make me enjoy and appreciate movies more!
I am very surprised that you didn't talk about the main score or Joel P West or The Light and the Dark score in the final battle. In the theatre, I remember myself being constantly blown away by how the scores gave me the emotion of the moments and how the score feels like it's a blend of modern, ''regular'' music Shang-Chi obviously has in his life since coming to the US but also with a mix of his traditional background. After the movie, I remember saying to myself ''This score is 100% CinemaWins material''. Guess I was wrong lol. I mean I personally listened to Shang-Chi's main theme and Light and the Dark constantly for 2 months
He missed Brad Allen too. He was the choreographer and was a part of Jackie Chan's stunt team. Probably too focus on making his nebula metal gear solid thingy so he didn't do as thorough of a research
I completely agree! I've been listening to the score a lot of late, and thinking about how a) it's really great and does such a good job of reinforcing the themes characters and beats of the movie and b) shows that while it might appear to progress slowly - because it's often thinking so far in advance - Marvel does reflect a lot on what it does well and not so well. They've received a lot of criticism for the scores of their films often being boilerplate and that definitely was the case for a lot of their earlier movies, but when you look at the more recent films (and actually their TV shows), it isn't really the case anymore and none more so than with this, where Joel P West has clearly done a tonne of work to ensure that not only does it blend styles and instruments, but also can't be mistaken for belonging to any other film in the MCU. It's great.
Another detail I loved about this movie is Shang-Chi's theme, it's a combination of his parent's own worlds. Loud wind instruments for his dad and gentle strings for his mom. Combined make a great theme for him.

This was one of the best solo Marvel movies I've seen in many years, and it really surprised me how much they pulled me into the story of a character I've never read about before this movie.
I never got the hate for Trevor. It was a brilliant idea and totally well executed. Its not the film makers fault some people build up epic expectations in their head and cant handle a bait and switch.
I think it was more that they removed an Asian character with a negative/outdated stereotype and replaced him with not one but two white guys. This film reintroduces the Asian character and rewrites him to correct the stereotype instead of burying it.
Otherwise the bait and switch was fine and executed pretty well.
Disclaimer: I'm not familiar with the comics version of the Mandarin. This was just the debate I remember occuring around the time Iron Man 3 came out.
@@BonaparteBardithion Iron-man 3 fucked up my favorite arc, Extremis and a good character in the Mandarin. So if you were a fan of either of those, you got screwed. Then they just kind of ignored the plot of Iron-Man 3 all the way up until this movie.

@@Lordborgman they did. Hail to the King premiered in 2014. Also, Fu Manchu was racist as fuck, so Marvel actively changed Shang Chi’s dad into a not-at-all-racist-stereotype character.

I cannot believe you didn’t win Banner saying “I don’t have her number”….totally makes sense in-universe and probably my biggest laugh of the movie. It being at the end was just perfection. Great little cameo without detracting from this story and these characters.
I was not at all excited for this movie and it def ended up being a top 10 for me.

I actually like how they portrayed the makluan rings unlike in comics where it’s filled with objects that can warp reality they understandably gave it a nerf. But they still made it cool and interesting to watch
My absolute favorite movie. Didn’t feel like Marvel, it wasn’t a hero origin story or learning abilities (he knew who he was), and the villain that you expected was truly just a man who loved his wife. Didn’t even want domination, just wanted her back.

A bunch of people kept flagging employees down and asking if the movie was in Mandarin the whole time (some even going to get refunds - like c’mon dude)
Employees hung out in the hallway JUST to watch the bus scene.
Honestly it was awesome to see Sir Ben Kingsley back again. I loved his appearance in Iron Man tbh. I'd also never heard of the Shang-Chi before this movie so it was a really cool way to be introduced to him.
To me, the father is one of the best villains. From his perspective, he's in a tragic revenge movie from the early 2000's. He's not doing this out of malice or hatred, but loss, regret and pain. He's twisted from all his years spent fighting and killing, but he's trying to be a decent person and take of those he loves in the way he can.
Just saying, this guy is my favorite marvel villain hands-down. He's not as much fun as Loki, not as just as Thanos, but he's like the protagonist from a completely different film. Love it!
I'm not the biggest fan of Shang Chi but man, I love Wenwu's motivation. I'm a pacifist but if I heard my dead loved one's voice calling to me, asking me to come save them from X location, I can't honestly say I wouldn't do exactly what he did. The family angle done sincerely is way more powerful to me than the standard "I like money" angle
When I went to theater last year, I knew instantly that this movie is something special.
From the first moment on when the story of TheMandarin and the ten rings was told. From Shang Chi, Wenwu, his wife and their tragic story of your past catching up to you, up to the very end - beautiful but sorrowful story. The writing, the sets like the wonderful shots of Ta Lo, the side characters, the action and the combat scenes as well as the fighting choreography. Wrapped up by another beautiful MCU credit scene. Shang Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings was one of the few movies lately to really touch my heart, up there with Alita: Battle Angel.

I second this. At first I wasn’t interested in Arcane since I don’t care about LOL, but damn Arcane is amazing. It made me fell in love with so many things so quickly. Not only is it one of my favourite series of all time, it also became my favourite animated show of 2021. That's saying something considering the fact there a lot of amazing seasonal animes last year, but only a few of those shows are near the level of Arcane.

I got into wuxia about a year ago, so seeing the little details in this movie was really cool!
Though I fully expected the blood spurt out of the mouth when Wenwu *nails* Shang-Chi in the gut...

The reason you were getting Jackie Chan vibes from so many fights was due to the Second Unit Director and fight choreographer Brad Allan, who was a part of Jackie's Stunt team among other things. Also got to fight Jackie in Gorgeous
I recently learned that Morris is based on a real creature in Chinese mythology, the Hundun!
The rest of the creatures come from Chinese mythology, too. The fluffy lion is a Fu Dog, the "weird horse" is a Qilin, the nine-Tailed fox is a Huli Jing (which inspired the Japanese Kitsune), and the VFX supervisor even said there were Chinese phoenixes, likely Fenghuang.
I wanna mention the theme on light and dark, yin and yang, good dragon bad dragon etc. Shang relates martial arts to his father because he was forced to learn whereas his sister relates martial arts to their mother where she learned of her own volition. Shang later fights with a staff, stiff and without a sharp edge whereas Xialing uses the rope dart, chain and with a sharp edge. Thought it was a great little detail
This movie slammed me with nostalgia, having grown up in a household that watched a LOT of kung fu movies. Even the start in Mandarin hit me- i grew up in a half-Asian household, so my grandparents would watch fully Vietnamese fighting movies and I wouldn’t understand a word of it but wouldn’t ever be able to look away. So great!

Surprised there was no mention of the score. Gave me goosebumps in more than one part of the movie.
You mentioned the Skadoosh: Just like Po changes Shen's cannon balls from red to gold, Shang-Chi changes the blue (Tai Lung's colour) rings to gold (the colour of Po and his mother). And having Michelle Yeoh there just deepens the metaphor for me.
.... I think that's the actual reason WHY he called it skadoosh...........

Didn't notice it the first time, but when Awkwafina's character was learning archery and hit the target, the lady archer right next to her give a little smile as if she was amused by a fellow student making some great progress.
It's probably already been mentioned in another comment, but another thing that's really interesting in terms of the characters is that while Xialing looks more like their mother in terms of physical appearance and Shang-Chi like Wenwu, their respective personalities are more like the opposite parent. Shang-Chi has his mother's heart, saw the world in a similar manner that she did. Xialing is driven, always willing to fight for more than she is allowed by others and take what she feels she deserves. I feel like that contributes to why Wenwu could barely look at Xialing after his wife was killed. Because he saw himself in her and was confronted by the fact that it was his drive and ambition that lead to his wife's death.
One of the best marvel films in my opinion
Two small details from the Mandarin:
1) When Wenwu says he's lived ten of the old man's lifetimes, what he actually says is "I've eaten more salt than you've eaten rice."
2) The line the old man speaks when you comment about his rhyming. This is actually a way of speaking that educated people use where you speak in four word sayings. It's meant to evoke a lesson from a story, similar to a parable or the title of a story like "Tortoise and the hare."
I like how wenwu's rings coulors at the start of the movie looked more pale and light but towards the end it was darker to show how he changed
