  • In honor of Labor Day, our latest interview with former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich reviews how the federal government should support the new virtual economy as we battle the coronavirus pandemic. He says the economy won't fully recover until there is a vaccine and that President Trump's first term in office will not leave behind any kind of economic legacy. Watch the video to see why he thinks a universal basic income will offer more economic reliability and why we need a revival of the CARES Act.

1.) Disagree: ‘’The might of the sectors in competition with the U.S... but we’ll deal with that when we have to’’ - you mean state sponsored incentives to ruin market economics and give unfair advantages to Chinese firms? CCP ideology is in fundamental opposition to the West. This is a global security concern. CCP can not be trusted with the power that comes with largest economy. It should have been dealt with by keeping communism out of the WTO, because corporations can’t compete with countries on unfair playing fields. Leave action any longer and you’ll continue to see more militarisation, more coercion, international law breaking, human rights abuse, bullying, propaganda, and Maoist styled 1939 Nazi CCP, not less. The West is so uneducated about China and do not comprehend the extent to which the CCP can’t be trusted. Regarding Trumps legacy; I don’t like the way Trump is a compulsive liar, but standing up to China will be his legacy, the first President since Truman and Eisenhower to do so.
      2) Disagree: ‘’we need immigration to counter an ageing population’’ - immigration keeps productivity low by reducing the incentive to invest in fixed capital to replace labour, he uses an example of construction. However; for instance, investment in alternative construction techniques would be subject to innovation-push in absence of abundant labour, thus increasing productivity and boosting wealth.
      3) The rest I generally agreed with, but the points raised above are huge points of contention I have with his opinions.

American Capitalism is not the harshest in my opinion...the simple fact is the American economy subsidizes the rich, wealth creation, and consumption in a globalized economy. To the extent that we don't require the labor and time for technological advancement we could invest this labor in improving the quality and efficiency of individual craftsman ship. Instead the world economy is increasingly dependent where certain links exist in the economy that don't have to. Sending resources to certain economies only to make them richer on paper at the expense of local culture and creative output. People in some countries have formed unique cultures and customs around certain crops and trades. I would think the goal could be to enhance this vibrancy by providing an educational framework that promotes the enhancement and advancement of the cultures. Subsequently by being knowledgeable about ways to improve living standards people can build a sense of connection and meaning in their economy's. This instead of the monotony of factory work or some other minimal wage labor might better suited to provide the public health and vibrancy people in "undeveloped economy's" need to advance.

His philosophy suggests he thinks we're still in the 1990s. Probably because he's rich and so are all of his old friends, still talking about the same crap they discussed two decades ago. A number of the things he mentions are reckless, stemming from the decades-old guilt-driven liberal concept of globalism. China's not going to 'take care of us' the way we supported some other nations in our hey-day. (1.) One reckless argument he makes is that we should 'kick the can' on national security issues surrounding certain enterprises within China's economy. (2.) Another is "not worrying" about the National Debt... who buys our debt?... China. They recently threatened to unload significant holdings of the US dollar in retaliation for some policy, which would cause imports to be very expensive... and we import everything. (3.) Which brings up reckless argument number 3, which is that it would be some kind of economic catastrophe if we made things in the US (I'm not saying make everything, but we need to be doing more than making viral videos and trying to not work for a living). The fact that we rely so heavily on imports is what gives China's holdings of our debt so much power over us. (4.) Reckless statement number 4... that we need basic income distributions. This may reduce the incentive to work and lower productivity. ***All four of these 'policies' work together to put us in a very wrong direction. ***In summary, we can easily become the international equivalent of a penny stock, especially considering cultural deterioration and an aversion to work.

The toxic atmosphere of our current government’s hyper-partisan politics would be replaced by hopeful optimism and positive collaboration once the earth-shattering legislation of Andrew Yang’s “Freedom Dividend” and “Democracy Dollars” are passed. Both of these groundbreaking policies have broad appeal across party lines, and that’s why the Yang Gang is made up of a broad and diverse coalition.
Be wary of divisive and inflexible political ideologues. Don’t you dread the prospect of a demoralizing partisan deadlock that impedes our country from soaring as a united leader that conquers the huge challenges of the modern world? In times of deep dysfunctional division, finding common ground is hallowed ground. The Yang Gang is ecstatic because we believe that we have found that elusive common ground. We are not Democrats first. And we are not Republicans first. We are fellow Americans first.
    ***************************************
FREEDOM DIVIDEND: $1,000 a month to all U.S. citizens over 18. Would be forfeited during prison incarceration. Those who receive “cash-like” welfare benefits would have to choose between the Freedom Dividend or the cash-like welfare benefit. Would be paid for by a selective federal value added tax. The “bottom 94%” would experience a net financial gain. The “top 6%” would benefit from a supercharged economy, as placing money into the hands of the American people would increase consumer spending, and that would help US business grow and thrive. Consumer spending makes up approximately 60% of our nation’s GDP.
    ***************************************
The Left: “I’m in favor of raising the federal minimum wage to $15.” Right now the federal government subsidizes these businesses through welfare programs.
The Right: “Small businesses are the backbone of the economy.” Raising the federal minimum wage too high may cause many small businesses to close and the loss of jobs.
Forward: Andrew Yang’s Freedom Dividend of $1,000 per month would effectively increase wages by about $6 per hour.
The MATH: $1,000 per month divided by 160 hours per month = $6.25 raise per hour.
    ***************************************
DEMOCRACY DOLLARS: Every American gets $100 to give to the candidates of their choice. That would greatly diminish and almost completely drown out corporate influence over our government.
    **************************************
Over 40 years, Andrew Yang’s “Freedom Dividend” would give much more than one million dollars minus “value added tax” to couples. The Freedom Dividend increases over time. Put the money in our hands!
The “bottom 94%” would benefit from a net financial gain of “Freedom Dividend” minus the “Value Added Tax”. The “top 6%” would benefit from the fruits of living in a more equitable society. The “top 6%” have family members, friends and colleagues that would benefit from the net financial gain.
    *****************************************
Watch Andrew Yang videos on KRplus to find out why Elon Musk, Dave Chappelle, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) and Jack Dorsey endorse Andrew Yang for president, and join the Yang Gang to move America forward!

If we had a UBI and universical healthcare, I would have been a doctor by now. Instead, I have had to go to school at half the speed I could because I needed to pay rent and get the medication I need to succeed in school.
I was finally lucky enough to find an EMS agency that lets me work part time AND keep my benefits, but this company is a freaking unicorn out there and I still need to averagr 30hrs/week so I still can't go full steam at school.
Guarantee I'd be a lot more helpful to society, and generate a lot more wealth for the country working as a rural ER physician like I want to, rather than working as an EMT in a big city for minimum wage.
A UBI is a logical next step in our country now that we are post-industrual (a good thing) and service based. It means we've grown as a society past the outright requirement of working in factories.
A UBI lets people pursue education that lets them add compoundingly larger and larger amounts of value to society over what a worker in a factory can achieve. It just doesn't make sense to us americans who can't even so much as listen to a single sentence without freaking out and screaming our reactionary opinion at it instead of hearing someone out and looking into the idea themselves.

UBI is going to be needed in the future when computers, AI and other technology’s will take over many of the academic, economic and intellectual jobs like repetitive things like attorney work in the US and the world and its already started. It will take some time, maybe some decades but i believe it will happen and we need to help our youth and young find fields of work thats up and coming. Like healthcare or infrastructure construction, engineering and that stuff. Feel that its seen as bad or less worthy of being in fields like construction, when hevy investment in infrastructure is needed for the green shift in technology and energy. So to give our young the view that jobs like that is just as fulfilling as college and that may be right way into the future for you. To at least give them the option and not look down on them for it.
Automation in repetitive factory work is already the standard and also a good example why we need UBI.
We need to think of jobs differently than we have in the past and that when technology and automation take over the tax money from that should be paid through UBI. People can then do other things like helping, voluntary work, re-educate to a field that has demand for human labor. Like construction or hard labor, infrastructure thats needed for the shift to green energy technology thats not going away from automation and technology for a long time if ever and those jobs then need higher salaries to attract people.

The lower part of the K consists of parts of the economy that are not critical to the function of day to day life. Restaurants, luxury goods, high end products, entertainment, and tourism are all expendable and can disappear when times are bad and will sprout up again when things improve. As much as I agree with improvement of oneself; we also can't sustain the idea that its every man for himself. We have the worlds largest economy and yet have some of the worst statistics such as education, health care and treatment workers. We also have millions of people living below the poverty line and kids who don't even have enough money to eat. While I don't agree with giving people unlimited "hand" outs we do need to be changing the way we perceive production. Working 40 hour work weeks doesn't mean your productive it just means you put in a "normal" work week. Conscious capitalism is the way forward where companies pay their workers fair wages, care about their communities and also spend time to be environmentally friendly. Just think if people had the most basic needs met, of course while being a contribution to society, crime rates would fall significantly. No one regardless of job tittle should have to live in poverty while others live in extreme wealth. I am not in favor of wealth transfer but our idea of every many for himself has clearly been a poor idea and because of it we continue to see increased crime rates, less educated individuals and a division of beliefs that continue to grow. Business as usual won't work anymore we need to learn from our mistakes not try and recreate the past.

Through Reflection you are diluted! People are driven by self interest. While it is ugly it is human nature. This will never change. That fact is why Socialism/Communism is the utter failure it has been proven to be in history. If humans were more like Bees or Ants socialism would be the logical and best economic system. This simply is not the case. Mankind is hardwired for profit. This fact can be forced to be imposed on people for a short time but will fail eventually. The Soviet Union tried and for 70 years they did nothing but fail. Capitalism is just a natural Extension of human nature. It incentivizes innovation and hard work. As far as your point on crime rates. So what your saying is either we pay these Thugs or they will do violence to get what they demand? Well screw that! Extortion is not something that should be rewarded! If you break our laws you will be sent to prison for a long time! Law enforcement should be Extreme! Your way is to say that Society give in to Thugs! I say do away with the Thugs! Problem solved!

The event/venue and hotel industries haven't gotten too much attention, though they are crippled globally.
