Because online marketplace do nothing to check where inventory comes from so because there seems to be a lack of checks and balances to make sure what is sold wasn't stolen it encourages more syndicates to do things like this. Locking up criminals doesn't stop this when there's still a place to sell. At that point its a matter of not getting caught rather than a denial of resale.

I live in Australia. I frequently buy online. I notice luxury goods from the United States are significantly cheaper lately. I wonder if they are stolen goods.

You think retailers would do this when they're moving more towards self service models. Self checkouts, less workers on-site. The problems seem to stem from both local law enforcement and retailers wanting to save as many bucks as possible. These stores I'm sure are insured if the theft is big enough to impact margins.

I doubt the fee for official brands. They are likely paying around the same. Official brands already make profit margin from the difference of manufacturing to the wholesale price that they would sell to regular retail stores.

Organized retail crime is a very different thing than rioting events and small time thieves. The higher dollar thresholds exist specifically so they can go after organized crime more effectively, without crushing people that are already in poverty. Small thefts are a drop in the bucket compared to that. And they don't have to pay 40k/yr/prisoner in those cases. It's cheaper. It's more effective in stopping the crime. One of the many reasons Cali economy is better than any red state.

I'm in Florida, and theft is pretty bad here too. Sawgrass Mills, a huge mall outside of Ft Lauderdale, was just hit yesterday by smash and grabbers who used pepper spray on Neiman Marcus employees. That mall has had similar robberies in the past. Florida is notorious for financial fraud, including tax fraud, ID theft, and Medicare fraud.

I work in retail and this is not how retail insurance works. Insurance doesn't cover stolen items. most corporations pass on the losses to the consumer by increasing prices. Company that I'm working at right now just did inventory. now we know which items are being stolen very often so those items prices are going up to cover the losses. companies won't lose money.

Insurance companies do not have money trees. The premiums are deposits to bank account. A good portion of the premium is operational costs, it’s reinvested to make money. They are for profit companies with stockholders or members …. They have to make profit or they lose their financial ratings.
It’s ridiculous- insurance is not supposed to be “used”. It is intended for the unforeseen/unexpected claim’s. It’s a necessary evil. It’s not a savings account!!!

The income is paid via Amazon, reported and taxed. Expenses? The company lists what they paid for the items, if the ratios don’t look like they’re claiming high costs, what would flag an audit?
There’s no reporting system for purchases of wholesale goods.
If they accurately claim what they paid the boosters, and log paid in cash, there isn’t even a tax issue if they were to be audited.
Cost of goods sold is only a relevant term for a company that elects accrual based accounting and many don’t. Most don’t actually until you get into multi multi millions in annual income.

There is if the implement of RFID chips on the merchandise. Track data of the merchandise leaving without being paid for. Every RFID chip is unique and you could track to see where that merchandise came from to know if it was stolen.

Crime rates are almost a direct correlation to the conditions of the society they belong too. People haven't changed in 2000 years. Low crime rates tend to come from places where ALL the citizens basic needs are met comfortably.
In a ironic kind of way, capitalism IS to blame. You can't have a system that systematically moves wealth from the bottom to the top while also making that top further and further away and not expect consequences.
You could have a million police, if the economic conditions around house prices, basic needs, healthcare and education continue to decline, crime will continue to rise.
The government knows this of course, they rely on the self fulfilling loop that makes spending more tax dollars on fearmongering and police equipped like its ww3 easier to explain to the public.
It will inevitably collapse at some point though, it's only a matter of time. The exact scenario's might be different throughout the centuries but history always repeats.

It makes more sense to fix the gaps in a leaky bucket than to deal with individual drops that fall through.

Why is Amazon associated with many negative outcomes? Selling on Amazon is advertised as a way to gain financial freedom. Amazon could probably check if the people obtained the goods were legal. That means providing receipts.

This can be quiet cost effective when you look how much it cost annually per prisoner. If California were to simply be harsher on crime, essentially your saying "build more jail" as if they can just snap more jails into existence.

My mom’s one friend works at a grocery store in California and theft each month isn’t uncommon. A bunch of people they caught with police help didn’t get out right away aside from elderly and minors if no long prior offenses. She resides in city that has been unaffiliated/non-partisan run for years.

Yeah, I see your point and you know some people resell it online as a 'new' product when, in fact, you'll be lucky if the product doesn't go bad by the time you get it in the mail. Meaning: many beauty products have parfum/fragrance and sometimes it is hard to tell if the product has gone bad. I guess, if you buy it and it makes your face break out, you might think it was the product? It's hard to say and hard to tell unless it turns color or something?🤷‍♀️

A wrongful conviction can happen to anybody. I’m not siding with criminals, but rather the actual innocent people who plead "not guilty" yet get sentenced. If a loved one of yours or you yourself gets wrongfully convicted regardless of their/your innocence, I‘d like to see if you still think that 5 extra years added is justified.

How about taxing corporations to pay for government spending?
