Michael does not have a reason to hate Toby. Dwight and Andy however, have a very good reason to despise him. That banjo duet will never be forgotten

Michael hates Toby because Toby settled for a divorce to solve his marriage problems. Michael doesn’t appreciate that since his parents did the same thing and it affected Michael negatively. It also explains why Michael was receptive towards Toby‘s daughter, cause he knows she’ll end up as the the one hurt the longest in her parents divorce.
“Take two of these and call me in the morning!” Michael flips off Toby and leaves the counseling meeting.
In the first season, we find out that Michael hates Toby because, as the HR rep, he actually works for corporate, i.e., Michael is not his boss.

The funniest part of the rock scene is that he couldn't even be bothered to wrap it himself - he got Dwight to do it

Paul Lieberstein (Toby) is a writer and co-producer of the Office. The Toby character is so passive, you wouldn't expect he had such a large role in the show's production.

He has absolutely no good reason, but since the writers make him so friendly with mostly everyone else, because he wants to be loved by them, they need a character for Michael to unleash his inner negativity on. He has plenty of it too

When the show was actually on the air there were a couple of channels I looked at, but the shows were NEW then. I have seen episodes multiple times since then, so I form my own opinions.

The Scranton strangler
I don't know what there is about the Finer Things Club scene, but Michaels reaction on seeing Toby with those cups and a bowtie always cracks me up.
That is one of my favorite scenes.Michael turning and there is Toby with posh suit on holding floral decorated tea cups.
Micheal is there at a huge crisis of making business relations via old style when he sees toby casually enjoying with cups and tea when micheal is in absolute mayhem 😂

I think the reason michael hates toby is because a couple of reasons. He doesnt really have authority over toby. Toby actually is HR. HR is basically the snitch to corporate when employees have a complaint about the boss.
Also he hates that Toby is divorced. It’s michaels dream to have a wife and kid, but since toby failed at that he resents him more for failing that.

What I love is the sheer lack of emotion Toby displays in the face of such blatant animosity. It's not even 'cold', it's just straight up tepid.

Let's peel back the curtain a bit: Is Michael's hatred of Toby because he thinks it makes him cooler in the eyes of others when he bullies him (similar to Jim pulling pranks on Dwight, just meaner) or is it because Toby is the one person who is supposed to protect his employees from Michael's abuse, so if he constantly undermines him and turns his employees against him he'll break Toby's spirit and ensure they have no faith in or respect for him and won't ever turn to him? Discuss.
It’s a bit of both. Michael wants to be the “cool” guy in the office and thinks that bullying his employees is the same as being cool. That’s why he hates Toby because Toby’s job is to stop him but since Michael can’t see the difference between joking around and bullying he thinks that Toby is just the “mean” authority figure that doesn’t want to let them have fun. That’s also why he thinks bullying him makes him look cool, because in his mind Toby is everyone’s enemy.
Neither - he literally says in this vid that Toby sucks life and fun from everything Micheal tries to do. He’s got such low energy and a depressive mood that Micheal cannot stand him being in the office.

It's because earlier in the episode Michael asks Dwight to get an original thought and not just agree with him on everything. In turn Dwight throws Michael under the bus for gifting Toby the rock.

This perfectly summarizes why Michael is not a good person. He has no reason to treat Toby so poorly simply because he doesn’t see Toby as a part of ‘his’ work family or because Toby’s face is demotivating. Michael’s resentment towards Toby is unjustified.
