I hate the way they keep on going on about how old Nastia is, like she is a washed up has been. She is just injured...seriously give her a break. Some people peak at 16 some at 19, it's nothing unusual.
They are f'd up. They said the same thing to Shawn Johnson when she got injured and came back at the age of 19. They told her she'd never make it because her body type wasn't ideal anymore and she'd never be able to keep up at her age. She quit not because she believed them but because she didn't want to put up with their bullsh*t (emotional/psychological abuse) anymore. I believe the world of elite gymnastics is a very sick one myself..
It cracks me up that they talk about how Nastia was not the ideal age for the olympics. I'm not saying they were wrong, because that is the trend, but now look at Simone Biles. She's 19 and she is on FIRE. Nobody has risen up to beat her. She's in her prime.

Agree, but I think they had different philosophy to begin with. Chow's emphasis was happiness above all, I think he insisted that Shawn had a normal life outside of gymnastics. I think Valeri honestly would've let Nastia just dabble in gymnastics if that was what she wanted (her book said her parents didn't want her to do gymnastics at all), but she wanted to win big, so Valeri got serious.

After watching this again, I have to commend Nastia for how far she went from here...on to the AA in Beijing! ! This was her first all 4 events meet since her surgery and she worked her ass off all the way to the olympics. And both girls almost...almost made the 2012 team. Historical gymnasts.
Nastia had multiple falls, was still recovering from an injury and still grabbed a bronze medal. All those squats/falls were 0.5 deductions. If she hadn’t been injured, she would have blown away the rest of the competition. Ankle injuries are so so so hard to come back from! I have a chronically sprained ankle and all it takes is just stepping wrong to make it flare up. I can’t imagine what all the tumbling and landings did to her ankle!
Right? Its sad what these super competition sports have people doing, pushing your body past it being ridiculous, get back to practice before a broken bone is healed, etc. Its so crazy! Nastia was incredible and so strong, her dad was wrong.
I forgot how rough of a competition that was for Nas... she was just coming off an injury so kudos to her for getting out there and doing those full routines back to back like that.
Everyone has bad days. And in the end, Nastia came back with tremendous performances in the 2008 olympics and stronger than ever. Both unbelievable athletes that made history.

With these two amazingly talented gymnasts, it comes down to 2 things 1. Prefer elegant dance moves and amazing difficulty; or 2. Prefer amazing nonstop power and difficulty. Its a choice. If they are both 100% on their game?? It came down to what the particular judges like better. I would NOT want to be a judge with these ladies. Both amazing. Both made USA so proud!!!! Gymnastics will never be the same after '08. It was the end of an era
I prefer the elegant, longer lines of a gymnast like Liukin or Komova over short, stocky gymnasts like Johnson or Jordyn. It's a preference and highly subjective - not taking anything away from any of them. They are all very talented and deserving obviously.
A Roper You are absolutely right. And the international judges tend to like the longer lines in a gymnast. With that being said, it's just more common for a gymnast to be smaller and muscular. Notice Nadia doesn't perform many "backwards" tumbling elements. Her dad has even said she is a "fragile" gymnast. Her routines were carefully choreographed. Same with Khorkina who was very tall. (Sounds odd calling a young woman who is only 5'3 or a little above "tall" lol)
