Roar was actually a horror movie, the plot is that the lions turn on the humans and hunt them off one by one. You also didn’t mention how one of their daughters needed facial reconstruction surgery after being mauled by one of the tigers, after already leaving set in fear once and being convinced by her parents to come back. Truly insane story.

'The Wizard of Oz' was insanely dangerous to film, the paint they used to make the witch was toxic, the costumes were really heavy and hot and they used a heap of extra lights so everyone was fainting. The props would sometimes explode and send people to the hospital. It's a horror show to read about

As someone who volunteered at the Caroline Tiger Rescue, unfortunately there are more tigers being raised in the US as pets than there are in the wild. Two of the tigers at the sanctuary were just sort of walking down the road in America when they were rescued. It's bad man.
Everyone thinks they want a pet tiger, lion, whatever, until the animals grow up and grow out of their cute "kitten" stage and their natural instincts kick in. At least there are rescues and sanctuaries advising against this exact thing.
That depresses me so much. These are beautiful animals that need to be protected lest they get extinct, and yet these people just think "lol cute big kitty, this will be fun!" I'm sorry but if any of these people get mauled, I have no sympathy for them. These are WILD animals that belong IN THE WILD, or at the very least a sanctuary where they're in a similar habitat and treated with the respect they deserve. Just awful, irresponsible behaviour.

Fun fact: Raising wild animals alongside humans INCREASES the risk of attacks, because it conditions them to view humans as slower weaker members of their own species and not as a potential predator. They (generally) won't attack the humans they live with, because they'll (usually) have imprinted on them as family (assuming the humans don't behave in ways that would provoke aggression within the animal's family unit), but you know how your dog reacts when the mailman is at the door? Imagine that but with tigers.

In the scene, she starts letting out these really loud and pained screams, and apparently that was the moment Tembo broke her ankle, and they kept it in the film. Not only that but afterwards she ended up getting gangrene from the injuries.

The “no animals were harmed…” tagline is from the re-release, not the original poster/release which was never released in the US. But it was billed internationally as an action comedy.

True story: Tippi Hedren’s most noteworthy movie is Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds,” which has a scene where she is attacked by crows, ravens, gulls and other birds. Because this was the 60s, the way they shot it was by having crew members FLING ACTUAL BIRDS AT HER. She almost lost an eye and called that part of the shoot the worst week of her life…and then 10-15 years later decided that shooting Roar without any safety precautions was a good idea.

I was actually on the Shambala Preserve where they filmed this a few months ago. They have shifted to being a legitimate big cat sanctuary and their main focus is on the care and preservation of these animals. And Tippi Hedren still lives on the property, her house is between the enclosures they have for them. It's not just in the middle of the city either, they have a ton of space.

I’ve seen this movie because my dad had a VHS copy. The story and acting are goofy for sure, but it’s also horrifying because you legitimately see people scared for their lives and really getting hurt on screen.
I’m like curious to watch it but the clips he showed were dangerous enough for my liking haha

In the early 80s a film adaption of "The Twilight Zone" was filmed. Vic Morrow, a famous actor at the time, and two child actors were killed during a Vietnam War sequence when a pyrotechnic exploded next to a real helicopter that was hovering right above the actors. There was a huge lawsuit and lots of news coverage. Crazy stuff. Really sad.
the kids weren't even supposed to be on set. this situation led to better enforced child labor laws in film. it sucks that two kids had to die for it to happen
I remember watching the Cinema Snob's review of this movie. At one point the elephant is supposed to pull them out of the water or something, but instead he crushes their boat (iirc) and it's really obvious that the actors are terrified but have to play it off as going according to the script. Insane.

I don’t know if anyone else remembers the movie “Secondhand Lions” but I loved it as a kid and this video made me want to look up what the filming for that movie was like and I found this quote, “Haley Joel Osment was attacked by the pig during filming. The lion had numerous trainers and handlers, but no one thought the pig might be a menace.”

I just watched "Nope" the other day so this hits hard. The takeaway from this is NOT that animals are aggressive though... Those lions probably didn't even want to hurt any of the humans. The problem is a very simple one that constantly gets overlooked: Humans are fragile!!!
We're so technologically advanced and so free of natural predators that we get very comfortable around most animals which is fine, but we don't often get the chance to really FEEL how BIG and POWERFUL and SHARP and HEAVY some animals are... Even people's doting and loyal domestic animals will leave them scratched and bruised simply by accident.
Imagine the little scratches your tabby gives you, but sized up 10x. The playful, woundless bites from your german shepherd, but with the bite force of industrial machinery.
Plus, we all get short of temper sometimes. All of us. You and me, and our beloved pets, ants, chickadees, foxes.... we all lash out sometimes, or throw away grace and caution sometimes. It's inevitable. So what happens when a lion has just ONE moment of frustration and does something petty or rude, just for a moment... This could be a lion who is normally an angel. Nothing has changed. Bad moods are simply inevitable. And a bad mood with a clawed paw as big as your face.... It's the SIZE.
We are fragile. We are the wimpy nerds of the animal kingdom. Thin skulls hold more brains than thick skulls. Our limbs are for going places and using things, not for bodily combat. We only need thick enough skin to protect us from bushes and gravel. When we have the chance, we're great at healing, changing, outsmarting, enduring... as a species. But as individual beings, we almost exclusively rely on circumstance.
Even animals who are TRYING TO AVOID hurting us will find it as difficult as us playing baseball with a christmas ornament.
We. Are. Fragile.
Asking a being much much bigger and stronger than us to treat us with a velvet glove 100% of the time, is an unfair expectation.

Just because we are smart enough to capture and contain large animals doesn’t mean that we are apex predators in the physical biological sense. We didn’t survive by wrestling big cats and large animals one on one, we survived by group hunting and fleeing predators.
Our biggest evolutionary achievements sacrificed hardiness and toughness for social and intellectual growth. Big animals can hurt us just by sitting on us.
Even if the big animal is playing, if you’re suddenly being crushed or stabbed or clawed what do you do? Push them? Provoke them? Hurt them back? They’re not trying to hurt you but they have super thick skin and rely on animals of their own species to be able to tussle when play gets too rough to tell them to knock it off
People need to respect how powerful teeth and claws and sheer muscle are and stop assuming that animals are as empathetic and understanding as humans (such as even being able to comprehend when someone is in pain). It’s all too common for people to get brutally hurt when they treat any animal like a toy, much less animals that could snap a person in half by accident

As an example supporting what you're saying, I heard from horse people, that if a horse steps on your foot, it can completely crush your bones, and not even KNOW that they're on your foot. You're supposed to pinch them, extremely hard, with your whole hand, to let them know to step off.
They said, don't be scared of hurting the horse. Really pinch them hard. Because amongst themselves, they bite eachother in those circumstances. And you have no chance of hurting a horse more than another horse. And horses are famously intelligent, social, and empathetic! We're simply alien to eachother. That's why knowledge and safety protocol go a long way.
Ironically, cats are very good at this. They're little scientists. They study us and come up with their own safety protocol, like being loud when underfoot, and moving away quickly when we begin to relocate ourselves. They also adjust various aspects of their speech to mimic ours to make sure we can hear them, and some even learn a few words in english, although the cat mouth is not suited for it. When humans put as much effort into cats as they do into us, the communication becomes very effective.
It's a shame many people find it unintuitive and then never bother learning. Imagine having a cat, constantly being told by the cat that they love you very much, and still thinking the cat is a cold asshole.
Anyway. In general, interspecies communication is a fascinating topic and there's so much more to learn in the future. I look forward to it.

not to mention, they were NOT PLAYING. the humans were egging the lions on to provoke a reaction or an attack. and, as much as i love animals, they are aggressive. you cannot go and get super close to a lion and touch all over it, especially untrained, and not expect it to be uncomfortable.

That story is awful, especially since it turned out they were keeping it drugged out of its mind on xanax
That whole story is absolutely wild, in the worst ways possible. They taught the chimp to drive!!! They gave it human psychiatric medication!!!!! There is no way that could ever have gone well, but what happened was absolutely horrifying. The person who got the worst injuries wasn't even one of the owners, it was a friend of theirs. I hope the least that whole thing can do is make some people rethink getting wild animals as pets.

Like, so much time is just the "actors", victims, trying to stay really still so they don't get killed until the cast and crew bothers the lions and causes them to be attacked anyway.

Tippi Hedren’s involvement is especially shocking to me. I figured Birds would be enough for her to give up working with animals, but sis bought the lion trauma dlc twenty years later
This reminds me of an old "Wizard of Oz" movie from 1939. The hazards that the actors faced were numerous. Just from a quick google search: the Lion costume was so hot the actor was overheating, the Tin Man costume was toxic, the wich was burned by a device making smoke effects because of a trapdoor failure, the main actress was pretty much starving, and on caffeine and ciggarettes so she wouldn't gain weight and wouldn't act sleepy during night sessions, and the snow they used in some scenes was made from asbestos (and so were some props). As you might have guessed, this one caused a lot of hospital visits...

My film professor in college was the assistant camera operator on this movie and he has so many bad memories frorm making this. He would never get into specifics but he would talk about how he saw terrible things. Saftey was his top priority ever since. Truly a changed man post Roar 😂

This is exactly what Jordan Peele was trying to say in his new film Nope, we use animals so often as speculation to our benefit that we completely disregard the fact they deserve to be respected in their own environment WITHOUT human intervention. When an animal decides to react to unfair treatment, we label them as "unsafe" when in reality, it happened due to our lack of proper judgment - yet somehow we continue to do it and are surprised by the outcome.

I haven’t finished the video yet so I don’t know if Danny touches on this but their claims that no animals were harmed are almost guaranteed to be false. It was the 1970s, back then zoos didn’t even know as much as they do now about taking care of these animals, and these were just random people with no qualifications. You can bet that the conditions the animals lived in were poor and their diets were wrong and their overall health was probably really bad. They were probably incredibly stressed 100% of the time too. Maybe there wasn’t any direct abuse of the animals, but everything about the poor organization of this film tells me that these animals were not given proper care and they lived very uncomfortable lives. I’m sure no one was actively trying to hurt them, but they were still abusing them
I feel so bad for the kids who probably have so much trauma from growing up surrounded by dangerous animals, to when they questioned it being called stupid, and then their parents divorcing, and all this being put on the internet for anyone to watch.
For anyone who doesn't know, this was one of the most famous families in Hollywood at the time. Tippi Hedren (Melanie Griffith's mom) starred in The Birds and Noel Marshall, at one point, represented the author of The Exorcist.
I feel like the fact that the article made it seem like they were just some normal family to anyone who wasn't already familiar.

My best friend and I got WAY too high and watched this years ago and no movie has ever made me more legitimately scared because of the context I had on this. Like the sheer fear I had knowing that these people were in legitimate danger made this feel like a snuff film that never actually killed anyone.

The terrifying thing about big cats is they're an awful lot like house cats.
It's just that what's cute in something half as tall as your knee is terrifying when the cat is twice the weight of an adult man.
Yeah, house cats scratch people constantly and might “bite” you when playing, it would make sense a fucking lion would do that too, except instead of a little scratch or nibble… Uh, I'm going to stop here.
And I've gotten fucked up by a house cat. My cat climbed up my body in a rush once trying to get away from a dog. It hurt for about a week. If it was a big cat I would have been dead.

I feel like they used the logic of "raising a cat and dog together makes them like each other more" and applied it to lions and humans
"Nope" coming out before this re-release is iconic. Peele makes such a huge statement on humans exploiting animals for spectacle and turning tragedy around animal exploitation into spectacle. This re-release is literally what Jupe did in "Nope" to the event where his chimpanzee costar killed and maimed actors on set.
not to mention one of Jupe's problem is the fact that because of his (skewed) memory of what happened with the chimpanzee costar (thinking that the chimp was reaching out for a fist bump after killing/maiming everyone else), Jupe acts and believes like he has a special connection - and can form a special connection - with a wild animal. like a Disney princess. and it's often this belief that leads to the exploitation of these animals, making a spectacle out of it, as if they are on a higher plane of existence. this is contrasted with OJ who is good with horses because he understands that they are fundamentally wild animals, and in order to "tame" them you have to get to _their_ level, and even then it doesn't necessarily mean you have a "special connection" with them - just that you now know how to navigate with the animal and co-exist.
it's what i get a lot from these people like the creators of "Roar", that they think that just because of something nice that happened with a wild animal or they raised it when they were cuddly cubs, that they have a unique and human connection with the animals. and it's like -- no!! not when you raise them or view them from human standards! calling them "wild animals" isn't """dehumanizing""" or """degrading""" them (real talk some people have this issue with the terminology) - that's literally what they are and you're doing absolutely zero favours to everyone by not _seeing_ that said animals can in fact destroy you in a heartbeat if you don't pay attention to how they function _as their own species._

I highly recommend reading Tippi Hedren’s autobiography. A large portion of the book is about the making of this movie. They got the lions and other animals from bankrupt zoos and trainers that couldn’t take care of them anymore. They were also almost constantly bankrupt while making this movie. I believe now she just runs the animal reserve with actual skilled trainers to help her.
I really enjoyed that book and am a huge fan of tippi and her family, it's def a super fucked up situation but it seemed like tippi really did care for these animals, she tells the story well
Imagine being an actual animal trainer and having to give up a lion to a bunch of reckless amateurs because you can't take care of it anymore.

There was a John Wayne movie called The Conqueror, where John Wayne played Genghis Khan, they filmed on a former atomic bomb testing site. The soil was radioactive and a lot of the cast and crew got cancer from this. Also they trucked in radioactive soil to Hollywood for reshoots.

Noel Marshall's character has a Kenyan friend who's the only sane character in the film, wisely refusing to go anywhere near the lions. He was played by Kenyan actor Kyalo Mativo, who wisely refused to go anywhere near the lions, and was thus one of the only people working on the film who didn't get injured. There's a great bit of behind the scenes footage of Mativo saying "where I come from - I'm African - we don't get close to lions. We don't cuddle them, we don't kiss them, we don't do that." He's clearly trying to find a polite way to say "these crazy Americans...", and it's beautiful.

Oh me too! The sick part. Not the big cats part, although I am from Zimbabwe and am friends with people who rehab wild animals including big cats. The mishandling of the animals especially the elephant in the movie would’ve been horrific. As bad as it sounds, I don’t care that these people got hurt by the animals. They deserved it for what they put the animals through!

I've seen a lot of people in unhealthy relationships with awful people so they never have to grow or work on themselves.
If Tippi Hedren at her worst was never worse than her husband on a good day, then she probably never focused on herself (e.g., her thoughts, feelings, and behaviors).
Maybe she felt insecure from constantly being in the public eye. Maybe she had unresolved trauma from the abuse she experienced in the film industry.

I got to see this movie a few years ago in theaters for the limited release. It was absolutely insane. Even just watching the trailer for it feels dangerous.
I checked the Wikipedia to answer my question right away, and oh thank god these weren't Ralph Helfer's animals. He did something similar to what these movie producers did, turning his home into an exotic animal rescue sanctuary and hand-rearing dangerous animals. He would sometimes transport animals for movie shots, and his best friend Zamba was literally the MGM lion. But his writings never mention anyone getting hurt. His bond with his animals was exceptional and he took training and safety seriously. He had a big ass bed made so he could still sleep next to his buddy Zamba when he was getting bigger.

Helfer went into the business largely to show you can train animals (especially exotic animals in the Hollywood business) without animal cruelty/whips and cruelty-based training.

There's a Vice documentary about the exotic animal trade in the US. In it they interview a guy who works in a big cat rescue center. Hearing about how the producers bought and raised lion cubs in their house reminded me of what the guy said at the start of the video:

If you want to make more videos about dangerous productions, I suggest taking a look at Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, the most expensive musical ever made, due in part to the several injuries that happened on stage.
I wanna say that during that time of the making of that movie a lot of families acc raised various animals along with their young children (they’d typically be around the same age) and see if their behaviour would mimick humans. Which is probably why no one said: hey don’t raise those lions with ur kids!!!

So literally every one of his fearful reactions he was told to do are genuine and not an act.
I think she mentions that in her book and she was like he would shoot his scenes and run to his trailer because he literally lived in Africa and did not understand why anyone would live with or be close

She stayed in a private trailer and put up a stupid little fence to prevent any of the orphaned children from getting close to her. According to my mum, she mostly spent her time talking about how Hitchcock ruined her career. One time they needed a folding table for something actually useful, and remembering Hedren's little trailer setup had a table, they rode over there on motorbikes and grabbed it while she wasn't around. That's the story of how Tippi Hedren accidentally provided one (1) resource during a humanitarian crisis. Because my mum stole it (allegedly).
