For me, the spanish version still hits harder. It could be due to my native language being spanish and the translation is more beautiful. The translation wasn’t off so im glad that english speakers can also enjoy this beautiful song. It’s now my mom and I’s special song since my sister and I are her little orugitas 💕🐛

I think a lot of people are missing the point in trying to compare the Spanish and English versions. They were written at the same time by the same man, and because of that, this translation is probably one of the best English translations of a song I've ever seen. It accomplishes that by not being a *literal* translation of the text, but instead finding the English words to convey the metaphor in a non-clunky way.
You aren't meant to compare them. The Art is the Art. If the Spanish version hits you harder, that's fine. If the English version hits you harder, that is also fine. It's not a contest. It's the same song, beautifully bridging the language barrier by a master of the craft.

It is possible that he wrote it first in English.. Lin Manuel is probably more proficient in English. The one part I prefer from the Spanish version is "hay que construir su propio futuro" ("must build one's own future") which is a different idea from "until you find your way to tomorrow" which is a more passive statement. Each version state some ideas better in one language. Both talk about losing the fear to be free. I listen to both in turns.

its also a nod to deceased nobel literature colombian Gabo, his price winning book 100 years of solitude mentioned yellow butterflys. and he is a mayor writer of magical realism that is the way the magic in the film is portrayed. the song also is a nod to the violent period od Colombia and it hit deep tu us.

Yeah, in 100 years of solitude, yellow butterflies are a sign of love between Remedios la bella, and Mauricio Babilonia, always that he appears also yellow butterflies come... It is not a very important point of the book, but always that in Colombia we talk about Gabriel Garcia Márquez literature (the autor of the book) he is always depicted with those butterflies... Every Colombian will link them... Plus it's the country with the biggest amount of butterfly species.

It's the best decision ever made that they chose the Spanish version in the movie. Most of the movies chose the english version in the movie, then put the native language version playing in the credits. I'm still glad having this English version in the credits, it serves as a translation who couldn't understand the Spanish version one, like me, a non-Spanish speaker. What I fucking love about the lyrics “Dos oruguitas, caccooned and waiting” is that it has amazing dual symbolism. It can refer to Abuela and Pedro about to become “butterflies” by growing and making a family, but ultimately becoming stuck in a chrysalis because they couldn’t complete the cycle together. There’s heavily symbolism for Abuela being a chrysalis from the scene where her walk doesn’t change throughout the generations, to her entire room being built the exact same way her original house was down to the tiles. It isn’t until another chrysalis comes along, Mirabel the girl without a miracle waiting on her chance to feel like she belongs. It takes both of them understanding each other for them to grow and both become butterflies. Truly amazing writing.

It's because the song writter wrote a Spanish and English version instead of having an original Spanish translated after the fact by someone else. It's of course more beautiful in Spanish because when someone sings in their native tongue the emotion flows effortlessly but in keeping the same singer we still get some emotion. Two oruguitas
    In love and yearning
    Spend every evening

That turns, and never stops turning
    Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Two oruguitas
    Against the weather
    The wind grows colder
    But they're together
    They hold each other

They're all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
    They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing

In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing

My grandmother passed in January and she never saw the movie. But Butterflies were her favorite and they were mine also. She would have loved this movie especially this song. She got to see her youngest grandchild graduated High school, helped care for her great grandchildren, watched her children grow as adults and live the lives she wanted them to achieve.

Bro, i just searched the song up since I liked it, but then I started to tear up a bit since it reminded me of my dad and his brother (aka my uncle)
December is a very special month for me. Not only because of Christmas, but because me and my mom almost lost him to Covid, he's a lot better now by the way. But two (i think) years before that, we lost my uncle due to a heart attack. I never really knew much about my uncle, nor did I interact with him a lot since he lived in San Francisco, but my family of course went to his funeral. It was frightening to hear the cries and yells of mourning family relatives, and with my relationship with my uncle, and considering how young I was, I didnt feel extremely sad. But the days, or months, or even years after that? I would cry about his death, its really hard to see many family relatives be hurt or die.
Edit: last night I cried a lot while thinking of this song.

This song made me cry right away. It made me think about my relationship with my son. I've taken care of him by myself since he was three years old. He is twenty two and possibly moving out soon. It made me think about how much pain I've sheltered him from of it just being him and I alone. Now life is calling to him like a mariposa, butterfly, and he will move on with his life. Two oruguitas is a metaphor of our life together. Great song.

    Dos oruguitas enamoradas
    Pasan sus noches y madrugadas
    Llenas de hambre
Siguen andando y navegando un mundo
    Que cambia y sigue cambiando
    Navegando un mundo
    Que cambia y sigue cambiando
    Dos oruguitas paran el viento
    Mientras se abrazan con sentimiento
    Siguen creciendo, no saben cuándo
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás
    Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
    Su propio futuro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás
    Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
    Su propio futuro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás

I personally love both songs and are great, english is my native language but I was surrounded and raised in a Spanish speaking home however I learned the language more when I moved to Mexico.
In my opinion for me the song hits more in Spanish, when the song begins it has a soft loving feeling because Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro meet but it does have a sad undertone to it, as the song continues it gets colder, sadder. It describes the two perfectly without actually saying it and many can relate to it and at the end of the Spanish song you can still feel the pressure abuela has to face for not just her children and later grandchildren but an entire community of people that are relying on her. The whole song is sad as it show the challenges abuela faced and how she wanted the perfect family. In english it does translate the song good, but I personally don’t like when the instruments in the middle of this song change to a happier tone. It’s my personal opinion.
I believe the English version was used for the credits and so people can understand the Spanish one but in their native tongue.

I didn't understand any Spanish but still cried in the scene when this song was played. The music is so fitting. Now that I listened to this version, I finally understand the meaning and cried even more.
First time I listened I thought "Don't you hold on too tight" means that Abuela needed to let her (grand)children have some freedom. But when I listened again I think it also means she needed to let Abuelo Pedro go... Because so many years have passed and it still causes her so much pain and makes her so afraid of losing her family. Well now I'm gonna cry every time I listen to that line thanks for the torture Disney
