    I remember when I watched this and the game's rules were outlined, as soon as the Green Knight dropped to one knee my first thought was 'oh it's a challenge to his morals and pride', because it was a challenge to "first blood" which means whoever has a bleeding wound first, meaning Gawain could have shown mercy and just done a small scratch or nick and still be the winner, then he would just have to receive a similar small wound one year later.

    I'm not so sure that Gawain died in the end. The Green Knight traces where Gawain's head would've been cut off, and then grins when he says "Off with your head." Like King Arthur said, it was just a game. Also, since his mother created/summoned the Green Knight, I think it was more a test to see if Gawain would finally be honorable instead of the coward he was originally.

      It is my understanding that in the original story the green knight chops at Gawain's head but the sash protects him, and despite this the green knight forgives him saying something to the effect of "it is normal to be scared of death and take measure against it, but you still took my blow so we cool bro". Because of this I interpret the ending of the film to mean that Gawain gets to live.

    I do believe that in the end of the movie, the Knight does not cut off Gawain’s head. Throughout the movie, it’s framed time and time again as a simple game. And I believe it never stops being a lighthearted game for the Knight, even while Gawain is fearing for his life. After all, decapitation didn’t even phase the Knight, so it wouldn’t be considered an equal blow to decapitate the mortal Gawain. In fact, in the original tale, the Knight simply gives him a tiny cut on the back of his neck with the axe.

      100%, I was gonna comment the same. The purpose of the quest was to make Gawain honorable and righteous enough to be willing to be decapitated to maintain said honor, not to actually kill him. God I love the moral messaging in this movie, probably my favorite movie of the year.

    • @camobranson09
      @camobranson09 2 년 전 +15

      You know... that would likely fit well with the idea of him being a Knight. It would not be honorable, himself, to deliver a similar blow to one who would be killed by it where it did little more than inconvenience him. Now if it wasn't a "game" and they were rightfully combating each other but doing a "blow for blow" sort of thing than every advantage the knight has against Gawain would simply exist and be utilized in totality.

    • @brainwasher9876
      @brainwasher9876 2 년 전 +8

      In the original, however, Gawain rebuffed the lady's advances each time, and gave the lord what she gave him: a couple of kisses. In the movie, it's strongly implied that she gives him a handjob, and he hides the fact from the lord (who in turn is actually the green knight).

    • @diegoyanez1868

      @@brainwasher9876 But the whole point of the original story was that even though Gawain wasn’t perfect, he was still trying to live up to the knightly ideals. And yeah, he fucked up every step of the way, but in the end he did pass the final test (taking off the green sash)

      The issue with your interpretation of that ending scene is that they have made it clear that Gawain sees himself die and then it goes back in time to show you what really happens. Like when he’s tied up at the tree. The end credit scene would then be going back on him going to stay at the green knights stairs.

    • @sigmacademy
      @sigmacademy 2 년 전 +35

      @@stevenyanis9051 I would argue that is what would have happened if he had tried to cheat like he did in every other Test put before him. The Green Knight would have chopped it off, simply because his deceptive nature didn't learn the moral lessons being taught to him, and would have given him a more merciful end than what the commoners had in mind for him. The Green Knight does not come across as malicious, evil or even a killer - he comes across as a force of learning and wisdom, and I would say that the "end" of Gawain is meant to symbolize the end of "old, foolish Gawain", and the more wiser Gawain being ready to ACTUALLY embody the values of being a Knight. :/
      The movie has "double events" showing you branching actions (and their consequences). The problem is, it doesn't really tell you whether the lead character came out of his encounters a changed man, which some felt were a missed opportunity. It seems more that "realization came too late" is what can be taken out of this movie's ending. Also, which "ending" is the real one, and which one is the fantasy vision? :/

    In the original story, Arthur actually encourages Gawain to cut off the Green Knight's head so that Gawain won't have to suffer a return blow, which is the opposite of the usual honorable Arthur we're used to. The whole story is an ancient subversion of a chivalric romance, which is incredible because it was written during the time of knights and kings.

    • @RelativelyBest
      @RelativelyBest 2 년 전 +11

      Arthur in the original stories definitely could be sort of a dick. Still, I don't know if I would call it dishonorable. I mean, it still conforms to the rules of the game and would have been a clever loophole had the Green Knight not been immortal. If it represents a moral failing, it would rather be a lack of mercy.

    • @JackalopeBunny
      @JackalopeBunny 2 년 전 +7

      I read that in the original story that he hides the fact he has the magical sash and the green knight knows about it. He does flinch and the green knight simply cuts him and since the whole thing was a game, that his mother was behind the whole thing or something. Its mentioned that the Green Knight is actually someone else, forgot who. The original ending has Gawain going home and every one knows that he was not brave in the end and failed his task. He always wore the sash afterwards as a reminder of his cowardice.

    • @RelativelyBest
      @RelativelyBest 2 년 전 +17

      @@JackalopeBunny Well, not quite. Gawain broke his promise to lord Bertilak (the Green Knight's true identity) by not giving him the sash, since he had sworn to Lady Bertilak not to reveal it. Basically, he'd made two conflicting promises and chose to honor the lady rather than the lord. This could be viewed as a bit selfish since the lady claimed the sash would protect him from harm.
      The Green Knight then takes a feigned swing at Gawain who flinches, which embarrasses him. The next swing is also fake but this time Gawain doesn't flinch. He gets annoyed and is like: "Come on, hurry up and cut my head off, I don't have all day!"
      So the Green Knight swings a third time and gives Gawain a small cut on the neck as punishment for concealing the sash. Then he explains that the whole thing was set up by Morgan le Fay in an attempt to - no joke - scare Guinevere to death.
      Anyway, at this point Gawain considers himself to have failed his quest because he acted deceitful, but the Green Knight declares him "the most blameless knight in the land." Gawain returns to Camelot and still insists that he failed, but Arthur and the other knights tell him to stop being silly and welcome him home as a hero.
      You could say the moral of the story is that it's okay to be imperfect as long as you try to be your best. Even the most virtuous of knights have human flaws. (Unless you're Galahad, I guess.)

    It is based on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, but the ending is completely different; and to get that ending, a lot of other minor things were changed. This is more a "what if Gawain was a loser failure of a knight" modern story than the more chivalric romance of the original.

    I loved king arthur, he has something different than any generic kings, he is how should i put it, eerie, here he is the legend yet look so fragile, but when he speak with his soft voice it has something else to it, he didn't speak loud not because he can't, but he knows other will focus to heard whatever he said, he didn't look menacing, nor weak, neither vile, he just a man with a lot of mystery within him...
    Reminded me a lot of king pandu a king or "prabu" from sundanese/javanese mahabarata, somewhat of legend, a King with soft spoken voice, speak no lies, devoted his life to good and greatness, and yet he is the strongest warrior out there

The boyfriend (he didn't know the story) and I watched it together and I was so confused by the turn the movie took and was screaming about how, "THIS ISN'T HOW IT"S SUPPOSE TO GO!" Then it turned out to be a possible future and the story ended as it should and it was so nice cause the bf was asking me questions and we had a awesome discuss during the movie (which we usually don't do) and it was just a great experience for me over all. Even if the movie did take creative liberties I loved the conversation I had with my man.

  • @Mo-W-23
    @Mo-W-23 2 년 전 +56

    Each encounter represented a trial for one of the five virtues a knight must have:
    1- The boy encounter represented a trial for generosity which he failed when he gave him only a single piece of coin.
    2- The ghost encounter represented piety when she asked him to bring back her head. It's the only trial he succeeded in which after he almost failed it by asking for something in return so that he would obey her request.
    3- The lady like Essel at the lord's house represented a recurring trial for chastity as she kept offering herself to him and he was hesitant at first but eventually he gave in to her seduction and to acquire the spell of protection.
    4- The Lord's final encounter with Gawain represented a trial for courtesy. The Lord had a deal with Gawain to give whatever gifts he acquires in the house in exchange for the Lord's courtesy and good hospitality which also he did not honor. (and yes he wanted a handie lol)
    5- The last encounter with the fox represented a trial for friendship, as the fox had accompanied him throughout his journey while being friendly and watching over him through his mother's eyes (which is very dumb btw since his mother set him up in the first place and sent him to slaughter... but anyways) The fox asks him to shamefully return one last time and no one would know or else just give away the spell before meeting with the green knight clearly testing the threads of friendship. Gawain then swings his axe at the fox telling him to go away and that he never asked for his company in the first place which he could've just said no to and went on with his journey. But he ungratefully sent him away.
    Conclusion: 1.Gawain's mother is one cold as b*tch.
    2.Plot wise, acting and cinematography wise the movie is true masterpiece.

    For some reason, I got the impression that Gawain was Arthur’s secret son. Just how he treats Gawain and that he regrets never paying any mind to him, it sticks out. Also Gawain’s mother, from what I remember, is Morgan le Fay and she is the one who deliberately becomes pregnant with Arthur’s child, Mordred, to usurp the throne. To me, this version of Gawain is like a hybrid of Sir Gawain and Mordred, but I don’t know if that was the intention or not.

I believe that Gawain's life was spared in the end by the green knight, you could tell he had a lightness to his "off with your head" and I guess it was all a game/test to see if Gawain had become honorable and a true knight, I think he becomes honorable as he accepts his fate to be beheaded by the green knight. I feel like Morgan was trying to nudge Gowain into going down a path other than the one he started on in the beginning of the movie. Gowain has built up Greatness to be such a larger-than-life thing to attain that he ends up never even trying, just as he never tried to have any big adventure before. Morgan sent the Green Knight to be essentially a kick in the pants to get Gowain out of his rut and hopefully learn the lesson that all greatness is, is choosing to go the right thing time and time and time again. That's why the Lord asks if Gowain will be changed by doing this one thing & go back home a hero- Gowain WON'T become great by doing just one thing but this journey isn't just one thing. He had to choose to leave & honor his commitment in the first place, which he did but for the wrong reasons. The battlefield presents the opportunity for Gowain to show generosity, and he chooses not to. And was punished for it. Winifred presents the opportunity to show courtesy and compassion, which he does but clearly isn't in it for the sake of doing good alone. At the Lord's castle, he fails to live up to some virtues but does fulfill others so he gets a pass. When he kneels down but still flinches away, he is fulfilling his obligation but poorly. That's why he's shown a vision of what would happen if he continued as he has been all along- doing what is right for the wrong reasons or not doing the right thing at all. It's only at the very end, when he does the right thing for the right reason that he takes his true first step on the path to greatness. That's why we don't see him die onscreen- this isn't the end of his story, it's the beginning.

As the Green Knight was conjured by his mother it would make no sense for it to kill him, it also begs that the Green Knight presented his head for him to cut off because his mother knew he would do that, it was a means of earning his honor essentially. Also with his daughter showing up at the end of the credits it's pretty much confirmed on film.

    The scenes that seem out of place (his kingship being doomed, his skeleton in the forest, etc) seems to be reflect the choices (and their consequences) not taken. One can also take from that the fact that the lessons he's being taught, is actually the mother teaching him those lessons through a third party/proxy, in trying to make him a person worthy of respect and recognition, and how his behavior indirectly affects and destroys her reputation and standing in the court as his mother.
    The Sightless Woman seems to point towards "seeing" people as they really are (not having sight means not making decisions based on looks, or being fooled by illusions). The thing about putting a blindfold on (in this movie) seems to indicate either highlighting truth, or trying to defeat some kind of falsehood. As an avatar of the Green Knight (perhaps), one could argue that she also represents the knowledge that age might bring, in knowing that perceptions do not always matter, or that perceptions in themselves are prone to lead one into creating false perceptions of reality and the world. Since the Green Knight represents a mentor or lessons that need to be taught, one can take from that the reasons why the different characters look, sound, think and act like they do as a reflection of either the Knight and his behaviors and mentality, or as "this could be you if you continue to be this way" lessons.
    The upside down portrait of him, I would wager, is both an indication of how his misspent his time wasting his life away, but also of his life hasn't really amounted to the potential of what he could have been.
    As for the Lady looking like his lover, I took away from that that both his love for her, but also his lust for the flesh that made him a coward, as in refusing to give her recognition officially as his queen, but also in taking without giving anything back in kind.
    As for the fox, I saw it as part of his nature that was always looking for excuses and looking for a quick way out of problems, as opposed to finding actual solutions to said problems. In trying to find shortcuts, it highlights the slyness of a fox, and the fact that it can talk, kinda highlights his inner dialogue and feelings at some points.
    I would wager even the "thief's gang" was also meant to highlight some part of his own personality, by looking at his "what's in this for me" approach to life, as well as just assume that certain things are due to him based on his greedy nature in simply taking what he wants without asking for permission - as seen in various parts throughout the movie.
    The parallels with The Pilgrim's Progress (John Bunyan) are also loosely applicable to this movie as well.
    I do get why a lot of people might have an issue with this movie. It does seem to have a VERY STRONG anti-male slant to its storytelling - it goes out of its way to subvert the hero stereotype by making the lead be all kinds of irredeemable in what it wants to make you believe is a cautionary tale/moral story, kinda redeems him at the very end, but in a way that makes you question if he was getting what he deserved in the end, or whether he was simply acting in self-interest (in trying to escape his circumstances, both past, present and future), or whether a fear of those circumstances will still driving him in the end (which didn't make him a hero/enlightened person at all). It sets up its male lead as a semi drunkard and womanizer, takes a side swipe at the rest of the Knights of the Round Table in passing as "dude-bros" (who encourage this kind of act first, celebrate after behavior) and sets up only a few deserving the benefits of nobility, while ignoring the rest of the "reality" it wants to portray, like showing everyone abandoning him, after having lived years with the benefits of nobility, but taking none of the responsibility for that privilege. Note the absence of any peasant character (apart from his lover) playing any particular role of note in this story (and the one or two that pops up - is the puppet show (which is placed there to represent the truth that the commoner knows (and the hidden truth that the Knight himself realizes) and the person calling his mother a witch (which is just another aspect of his foolish behavior, if you think about it) - so in short, their role is to dunk on him as well (when they previously praised him, kinda highlighting the fickleness of the love of a community of "deeds (whether real or fictional or exaggerated)"- something I'm surprised no KRplusr has brought up before (that I'm aware of)).

      How does the movie have an “anti-male slant”?

      @@sigmacademy Your explanation is a great breakdown of how the movie flips the "hero stereotype" on its head, but doesn't explain your statement about the movie being anti-male. I really appreciate your breakdown but just can't see how this was a put-down on men.

    I'm stoned right now and this entire video was "Swamp Thing in Camelot" which is now something I want to see. Good ole Swampy vs The King & his Knights.

    I like how you said he didn’t have to kill him to end the game. But looking for praise he does something to add the legend, his legend.

    i, love this movie. Extremely well shot of a movie and the color schemes are impeccable. Love the journey, and what challenges he faced. I wished there was more movies like this, but i fear that not a lot of people appreciates well made movies like this.
