Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This was Freddie Mercury's third single from the 1985 'Mr Bad Guy' album - his first solo album. Filmed by Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher, it was shot entirely at Henderson's Nightclub in Munich, Germany, on September 5th and 6th 1985, as part of Freddie's unforgettable 39th birthday celebrations. The single was released in the UK on 2nd September 1985.

The top part of it actually is quite remniscent of Imperial Russian Army, namely of the times and main character mentioned in "A Hero of Our Time" by Mikhail Lermontov
I think the video summarizes perfectly the message of Freddie's song: having a blast surrounded by people or 'friends', smiling ear to ear, but in the end you go back home, alone, and it hits, you wanna break down and cry, you get lonely (so lonely) living on your own. Love you, Freddie.

It's stupid to say "he wasn't truly happy", he had authentic moments of pure joy and extazy that you can associate to real happiness.
You can feel this positive energy in a lot of songs he made ; if he hadn't found sometimes real happiness in his life, he would never have been able to write such music.
But, of course, this joy and happiness weren't permanent ; he also had his moments of pure loneliness and pain, for sure.
You can find a good illustration of what I mean in the song "Pain is so close to pleasure"

Because that's how Freddie faced his troubles all the time, as people say. He never cried or complained on his life. He always smiled and moved on. Even in his later days, when he definitely knew that he singing his last songs, he never complained and even talked about it, as Brian said. When Brian and Freddie were writing the song "Show Must Go On", Brian said that he wrote it about Freddie. He was that clown, in which his heart is breaking from the inside, but his smile is stayed on him. It was very hard for Brian to look how Freddie goes through it. And as he said, he never told to Freddie "you know, that song is about you", and Freddie never asked "Hey, Bri, who is this clown?". Both of them knew what the song is about and no words was needed.
So, show must go on. I think that's why Freddie made this song intensionally this dancy, because probably he wanted to show, that you have to meet all your problems with the smile on the face.

Впервые вижу этот клип, хотя именно с этой песни в далёком 1988 я познакомилась с творчеством Queen, я тогда была подростком и просто очарована голосом солиста,а позднее и его внешним видом.
Оказывается, этот клип показали лишь спустя 2 года после ухода Фредди.

This song has the same vibe as It's a Hard Life: loneliness and emptiness among abundance and company. Both songs came out a year apart only, 1984-85. Both videos are very similar: Freddie is dressed extravagantly in a very expensive and extravagant party surrounded by friends, but he sings about feeling alone and how difficult life is even if it is filled by people, material things and celebration.

Nina I think he was happy there... for a while. But then it became too much. And the other band members had felt that way when they recorded there in the early 80s but Freddie went back to Munich in the mid 80s.

I remember when I was a kid around 7 I used to hum to this song. I grew up in an Spanish speaking country so I never knew what the singer was saying but I absolutely love the song. It got stuck in my head all these year. I had no ways of looking on youtube or google cuz I had not a single phrase or something to start the search . Anyways, at a friends house I saw this google hum app (i was unaware it existed) and the concept was simple. hum or whistle and the app will guess the song.
