For anyone in the newly released Nova 3, here's the differences I can tell so far, per the Boox website specs:
Nova 3 has a speaker / mic, Nova 2 does not
Nova 3 has Bluetooth 5.0 hardware, Nova 2 uses 4.1 (Bluetooth 5.0 is 2x fast, and greater range)
Nova 3 ships with Android 10, Nova 2 with Android 9 (not sure if Nova 2 can be upgraded)
Both tablets have same display resolution of 1872 x 1404 despite inaccurate info on their product comparison page
The display *may* be slightly improved on Nova 3 based on language they use in the description, not sure how, if at all

I am always keeping up with devices. It is rear that I am surprised by much out there, but this is something to get excited about. Awesome device and review.
I'm currently doing my day to day reading on a Kobo Aura One, but I'm eagerly awaiting a device with this degree of polish, and a colour screen. Definitely anticipating your iReader C6 review, so I can see where colour e-ink screens are really at right now. I will never not be mad that Qualcomm quashed Mirasol displays. Probably set us back eight years or more.

This hardware + color display - wacom layer = my perfect device.
I guess I have to wait a year or two for this but maybe as the libraries closed during the virus, more people will try e-ink devices out to push the whole market forward.
I have the same need for a ebook reader
I have a lot of Nook and Kindle ebooks plus a few Kobo. The Nova 2 would be nice because I could read them all on one e-ink reader.
When can we expect to see a review for remarkable 2 ?
I would like that in the review there was more attention to the management of pdf files and digital signatures. Is it possible to have a deepening by comparing various models? Thanks.

After many hours reading and watching info about several eReaders I bought this one. I'm waiting for this device cause Amazon deliver it with sleeve later. It will be my first E-INK tablet so I am so excited.

@@samoguz0 hi! Yes I received it. I'm very satisfy. Videos obviously does not works in this eReader and others as a tablet or cell phone but it's OK. You can use it but this is not perfect (change speed mode to get the most proper way) I'll recommend you this purchase.

Can you tell us about the battery life with the different display modes?
Is it possible to export the notes as image or pdf file?
Ahmed battery life is a little bit hard to measure, but I do know it can export your notes as png (current page only) or pdf (all pages) files, and the red green blue colors will show up there.

I've tried various android note taking apps on the boox note 2 (larger model) and the lag makes note taking unusable. Also that's in the fastest refresh mode.
John Francis I find the ghosting to be worst. I have the Boox Note too. The included apps are fine, but android apps are generally crap. Wish the notes app had pinch zoom for sketching. The third party apps don’t run very well

Shane Down I also wish there was more demos of third party apps, from my experience they ghost and lag. Practically unusable. Especially the ghosting in speed mode.
Does the writting experience on it justify buying one of those instead of a regular Tablet? Where I live, importing it gets a little more expensive than buying here a galaxy Tab A with the s pen.
battery life?
If we ignore waterproofness, price, and portability, what would be the advantage of buying a Kindle Paperwhite over buying the Nova2? (or, in other words: is there any reason --aside price, waterproofness, and portability-- to prefer the Kindle Paperwhite to the Nova2?)

Looking for advice if you don't mind:
I'm thinking of buying an Onyx Boox Nova 2, I could get it used "like new" for 298€ (~325$).
Is the software/device outdated though? It has Android 9 and I guess that's a concern for the App Stores but I'll propably use the Koreader and exclusively read pdf's anyway.
I really want an 8'' ereader for pdf's and to mark/make notes and it seems like a good option. Wanted the Kobo Sage first but heard about the bad battery and the Nova 2 seems to provide more for the price (and pen included).
When the color version comes in the future I will buy one. This is so close that the only thing missing is color.

Very curious if you've tried Nebo Script, IA Writer, and / or Pure Writer on this device and whether you tried it with a bluetooth keyboard, which apparently it supports. Thanks!
what about battery life with wifi? if i turn on the wifi on my Likebook muses the battery goes down like 10% in 3-5 minutes, it is normal ?
Regarding PDF:
1. does it render pdf text clearer than on a kindle paperwhite? i find the pdf font edges on the paperwhite very jagged, while it is very smooth on my galaxy note 9
2. is the screen size large enough to comfortably read technical documents/books without having to re-size?
Can you take notes on pdf or epub files? Or is writing only possible in the 'notes' app?

6). Using third party other wacom stylus of better quality help in better note taking?

I was interested in whether it was suitable for PDFs, so I printed out some PDF pages of academic documents just now - 7.8 inches diagonal and then the same 10.3 inches across, which the next size up for Note 2 Pro, the reMarkable, and so on. In my opinion most academic PDFs will be too tiresome to read on a 7.8 inch ereader. While I think the 13.3 Boox 2/3 would be necessary only for those who regularly read detailed PDFs, 7.8 is too small for typical PDFs and so my advice would be for 10.3 if that's an essential feature for you.
Hi, just another reply - I bit the bullet and got the Note 2 yesterday. I'm very happy with it for my needs, which are mostly ebook reading, occasional pdf reading, note-taking and occasionaly PDF annotation; if I knew i was going to be frequently annotating PDFs, or frequently reading academic PDFs with small print, then I would have gone for the Boox Max 3. With the Note 2, it's workable, but takes time because you have to zoom into the PDF and out, and it's never going to be that smooth because of the e-ink display.
I know this will be kinda late, but i have the likebook alita, and i can confirm you that for pdf you want at least 10.3
Take into account pdf doccuments are generally meant to be on a 13.3' inch (a4 size) so when you reduce it to a5 (10.3) its smaller but more than enough to read. I couldn't see myself doing that on 7.8 inches to be honest. And you will be getting so much more out of the screen. Like for example manga on this screen is INSANE. That being said because of ui things, even tho i got the alita i would deffinetly recommend getting onyx boox note pro instead. Good luck :)

I'd love to see how onyx devices, and this one in particular, handles a large ebook library in terms of browsing, searching, presenting, filtering, managing collections etc. Any chance of getting such a video? Quick access to ongoing reads, percent completed and all the stuff kobo does pretty well.
A comparison with other brands could also be interesting, but not at the top of my list.
In addition, how is the performance when running the kindle and kobo apps? Other thirdparty apps?

I have a Nova Pro and with the latest system update I also get those 4 refresh modes. But the status bar and notification center are refined in Nova 2 and looks much cleaner.
Note that the scrolling in web browser looks very smooth is because the system will automatically switch to A2 mode (or X mode, as your choice) when you move your finger on screen. This setting is at the bottom of the mode switch pop up.
Also for English speakers please be aware of the English translation is not very good. For example the aforementioned setting is called “Refresh scrolling display”? I can read Chinese so I can tell you it literally means “(mode) when dragging”.

On the boox note 2 (10.3 model), all the various android book apps work very well.
How is it on the reading app on playstore like egw? Can I use the pen normally when in the reading app from playstore? Can I write down immediately? Underline, circle words? Ang even magnify some lines for later lecture? Can I make a pdf stuff out of the app from playstore?
Can it be used as an external monitor?

The kindle app looks somewhat glitchy. That's a deal breaker for someone who reads exclusively on kindle books.

I have the max 3 and the battery last about over a month. The nova is better because of the backlight.
Depends on how long the screen is on. Screen on time is a more accurate measurement.

Hi, I've recived Nova 2 for my birthday. I love it, but I have some problems: reflow doesn't recognize my writing, I have already to correct all words (😰). The second problem is with the store: I can't download book from the Onyx store because download error, I don't understand why! Somebody could help me please?

@@alicson So far, so good. I got it for note taking, and it works great for that. It easily replaces my A5 notebook. It's not the same as writing on paper, but after using it a bit, I actually like it better than writing on paper. My "ink" is always consistent, and if I make a mistake on paper, I either have to scribble it out or erase it (if pencil). Here, I can simply go back in a bit and touch it up.
Also use it with kindle app, which works fine. Loaded some PDFs into it, those read fine - though the zoom is a bit wonky. Once you zoom in a PDF, I have a hard time getting back to no zoom. If it powers down, it takes a while to wake up. I changed my settings to sleep after 30 minutes, and power off after 12. I'm on day 3 of my first charge, at 82%. No complaints there. I do usually turn the backlight off during the day, if you keep it on that might drain your battery faster.
Also, the feature I wasn't expecting. If I go into notes, I can search on a word and it will scan all the notebooks handwritten text to find it. It finds common words, but not odd names or acronyms.
What I don't like is the slick back and no place to stash the stylus. It's slightly awkward to hold while reading - you have to kind of rest it on the armrest and cradle it. I have two different cases on order, so I think that will be easily corrected.

I purchased Nova 2 today. Google Play Store doesn't work - I see an error about not certified device.
UPD. Onyx gave me a hack how to activate Google services on this device. But it's not good to sell not certified by Google device which uses Android.
You have to go settings first to activate google play
I'd be interested to find out about the Bluetooth capabilities of this device (headphones, speaker, keyboard, mouse, etc) Do you intend to address this in a future review?
It's Android so anything you'll throw at it will work
finally, an e-reader with the features I need..........Amazon kindles are falling behind (I have a paperwhite). I wouldn't mind getting an oasis if it had a larger screen than 7" and if it had note taking on it and maybe chess or sodoku. Why does Amazon think nobody wants those features?

I don't see any feature that Boox Nova Pro doesn't already have. Only thing is faster refresh rate but that comes at the cost of crispiness and most of the time isn't worth it
Newer and faster CPU, more Ram, newer Android version, usb with otg, ac WLAN, frontlight without pwm, microphone, bigger battery.
So is this a dasung killer? Can you use it as a monitor

I don't understand how someone could create a device priced at $340 and omit a micro SD card slot. Would have been a great choice for me.
It has OTG USB tipe C port so you can connect even large storage devices like 2 terabyte external hard drives, also I think 32gb is more than enough, virtually thousands of ebooks.
@@sevaz89 That is a valid point i didn't think about, but I'd rather not have something hanging off. And that's fine for books, but I'd like to use it for Manga and that adds up very quickly. It's stupid cheap to implement a microsd reader in these devices.
