It was a good decision for Netflix to get out of Hollywood and collaborate with various producers around the world
indeed, they also found a brilliant show in DARK, from Germany
SG isn't the first. Netflix started investing in Asian content for many years now and its paying off. Kdramas are popular globally even before Squid Game. SG's success is paved by other kdramas such as Kingdom, and the most recent hit Vincenzo. But because SG is so compelling, people who has watched start talking about it and getting others to watch it.
They have ideas that are actually original and interesting
East-Asia is so superior, I wish I was somewhere over there.
I have been watching Korean dramas before Netflix.
There have been various overseas kdrama fans since before.
There are already voluntary Korean drama sites. The hit of Squid Games is no coincidence
I liked how he answered in Korean but answered the dub/sub question in English. It's like, hey I know you dont like reading so I'm gonna tell you in English so you can hear it straight from my mouth: Watch in Sub.
Brilliant read! Just like squid games, everything he does has intentions
Wow didn’t think about this, very cool!
The sub is horrendous to be honest. So many subtleties of Korean culture are lost. They literally translated 오빠 / Oppa as "old man" pffff like (Oppa) Gangnam style is almost 10 years ago... Even non Korean speakers (should) know that it doesn't mean Old man...
That said, i don't even want to imagine how they butchered everything in dubbed English
@@lalainaramarivelo Did they translate oppa as old man? I don't remember that. I remember them translating it to "babe" once and maybe ignoring it other times. Also, what would you have translated oppa to since you think the subs are so bad?
When you are translating a show, all subtleties can't be translated across languages. How do you explain that oppa literally means older brother but is often used by girls towards any close older male friend even if they are related? You can't just insert explainers. The average western audience 100% DOES NOT have any clue what oppa means if you don't normally follow K-pop or K-Dramas.
Uhaha
Watch it in Korean. You will feel the actors emotions.
It's a must to watch this subbed. The dub's take away too much of the magic! 🤕
And if you watch it in Korean Subs, The VIP's English is a joke.

He's right, subtitles is easily better than the dubbed version, not because dubbed versions are necessarily bad. However, in this show, the dubbed voice acting is quite jarring and breaks the immersion.

but sometimes the subtitles also has mis-translation or didnt get the true meaning from original ,it is annoying.
@@LeonMTan That’s unfortunately on both sides though. Dubs can have horrible translations too.

Funny part is director all of sudden speaks English like nothing 😂
I think the director want to show directly the difference between subtitle and dubbing problem in this way. This is brilliant idea I think.

Agreed!
Emotion is easier to understand when you understand the language. I'm sure there are better books to be read then TV shows to be read so I'm not going to waste my time with that.
Dubbing weirds me out, I can’t watch shows in anything but the original language.

The world has definitely changed. People are much more comfortable with subtitles than even 5-10 years ago.
The language barriers of foreign TV and movies aren’t really there anymore.
I think a lot more people watch videos with captions on anyway, so they’re more used to it. And higher resolution screens make them a lot easier to read than on tv in the 20th century.
As someone who watches a lot of anime, yes. If something has subtitles I don't even think about it

The squid game contains a story that people all over the world can enjoy and sympathize with
And the psychological description of the characters and the acting skills of the actors are also worth seeing
Also there was something about it that ignited a sense of despair and anger about the state of struggling people around the world. I thought of the middle class and the poor constantly in debt, i thought of the students being shot by the military in Myanmar. I thought of the punitive abortion laws in Texas. Idk...usually season two never lives up to the first season.
A TRUE MASTERPIECE.
he seems so nice... im so happy for him
3:07 Yes, the director graduated from USC with MFA in film production. But he got his undergraduate degree from Seoul National University, the 1st ranked college in S. Korea, like Sangwoo in Squid Game. He majored in communication there. He also has some resemblance to Gihoon. He was also brought up by a single mom, lived off her in his late 30s when he went bankrupt. Many of his other films are dealing with very sensational topics with lots of criticism, often to the degree that some production companies were afraid of working with him. But his box office score had been quite good even before Squid Game. His reserved but very realistic depiction of matters sheds new light on hidden problems in our society. And the subjects are not limited to the class divide or economic problems. For example, his movie "Doghani", "Silenced" in English title, whistleblew the sexual abuse committed by a schoolmaster at a school for the disabled. Because of that movie, S. Korea even made a bill, a.k.a. "Doghani law" that specifies the punishment against sex crimes done to the disabled. (Btw, I'm S. Korean. :D )
Korean with subtitles is much better. You can clearly hear that it's more detailed and more emotionally authentic than the English dubbed version.

This series is amazing. I saw it on netflix and kept scrolling past it. I have a Korean friend and she was like have you watched it yet? I was like no I am watching a bunch of other stuff. Then I watched it and was like damn, watched it all again, then started watching all the reactions to it. Such a beautiful mix of drama and horror and fun and everyone can relate to it in some way. Now I am learning the language and picking it up faster than spanish, how those pictures make the words is so cool once you really get into it. And it is interesting how all of the different subtitles read in various ways so you get the same story but it's always told a little bit differently.
One thing I love about Netflix is they always make large risky bets on their producers' ideas. It's the total opposite of the hollywood comic book meta that's been going on the past 10 years where every movie is a "safe" investment but the story is bland and repetitive.
all of his hard work and dedication was paid off, I cannot wait for season 2

S.Korea is like the Hollywood of Asia, and has been producing amazing, top notch Kdramas, Kmovies, and Kpop over the past 25 years. America is very late to the party.
I've been watching Kdramas ever since a friend recommended Oldboy about 15 years ago. Kdramas continue to improve but the main issue I have with most Kdramas is the over the top dramatic acting. It comes off corny and a bit silly. Other than that I'm glad there's more interest in Kdramas.

@@TerrorrLA omg i agree with you with this, I am Filipino and what I have noticed about Kdramas is that they have a lot of rom-com scenes that I think western people would fine corny, silly or cringe-y while we asians really find it fascinating, so maybe that's why westerners would only like shows like Train to Busan, Parasite, Squid Game since their genre is Gory, thriller, horror, action. I find it kind of hilarious that the entire world is only now finding out just how good South Korean television and film is. I've been watching various series and films born there since 2015, and I began my journey with a little series called "Oh! My Ghost". Since then my que has been flooded with hundreds of films and series from South Korea and many other foreign countries. Rarely do I add anything from my own country to my que, as it seems to me, that mine own countries artists rarely put out anything new and fresh, and it is often stale remakes of popular older film and television, the comic book craze, or something they stole from another country. It seems like a lot of the South Korean shows and series follow a certain recipe, and it takes some time to crack the code, but if something works, well, you just go with it. FYI : never watch a foreign language film, television show, or series dubbed into a language that you can understand. Move past your fears and annoyances of having to read the subtitles, because there is always a lot of information that is lost in translation, plus, you may learn something new. This is only one good show of countless many. Start your own journey to the far corners of the Earth. Enjoy!
