When the investigator is chuckling at Todd's jokes, he pauses mid laugh and says, " And that's after you shot him?" and Todd says "Yeah!". Clearly the investigators know their psychology. If they treated him like the monster he is, he would clam up and wouldn't tell them anything. They're giving him the validation he's been begging for so that he'll spill his guts. I agree that taken out of context it is very upsetting. But these detectives are doing everything they can to build a case against him and bring the families justice.

He got 3 different confessions that he indeed shot the man in about 45 seconds just by making a simple joke. Psychopaths have differences in their brain structure to neurotypicals. For example they have smaller areas in the brain which deal with empathy and larger reward centres in the brain. But most psychopaths donโ€™t go on to abuse people. Also some people who have damage to their frontal lobes in the brain which means that they have less impulse control than neurotypical brains. But again poor impulse control doesnโ€™t lead to criminal behaviour. I really think antisocial personality disorder does lead to this behaviour. Evil just feels simplistic to me, like โ€˜the devil made me do itโ€™ and they take no responsibility for their actions. I feel like they are more likely to hurt other people but itโ€™s still a choice. I have depression and anxiety and Iโ€™m autistic, so Iโ€™m fascinated by why people behave like they do. My dad is a malignant psychopath. He enjoys hurting people and only brings pain and unhappiness into everything and everyone he encounters.

(This isnโ€™t intended to be rude, but) psychosis is a symptom of mental health issues such as schizophrenia, not a diagnosis. People experiencing psychosis may also be in the trenches of other symptoms - for schizophrenia, this can include: delusions of grandeur; anhedonia; and hallucinations.
Someone experiencing these issues may think they (and/or their loved ones, community, country, etc) are being threatened, endangered, or persecuted. While they may not want to cause distress, pain, or harm to someone, their delusions warp their reality into thinking these actions are absolutely necessary. This can yield terrible results, however itโ€™s worth noting that 1) people with mental health issues are significantly more likely to be victimised than victimisers, and 2) people with mental health issues are significantly more likely to cause harm to themselves than anyone else.
Again, Iโ€™m not trying to be rude, but comments like this do a great disservice to those struggling with mental health issues. Psychosis is a cage, with sufferers experiencing irrational thoughts and a severe disconnect with reality. That doesnโ€™t make a person โ€œevilโ€. Interestingly, the indicator that the man being discussed wasnโ€™t experiencing psychosis is that he was present and aware of his actions.
ETA: One can experience psychosis without a pre-existing mental illness, but to repeat: psychosis is not a diagnosis. Itโ€™s a mental state, and a symptom.

Just for clarification, the interrogator laughing with Todd wasn't really getting along with him -- it's an interrogation tactic. He's "befriending" Todd to lower his defenses and make him talk more. They only have a limited amount of time to get as much information out of the criminal as possible. If the criminal asks for a lawyer, that basically shuts the police down and makes it where they can't keep getting information (because the lawyer will advise the criminal doesn't speak). So if the police officer had snapped at him and (rightfully) told Todd that he was being awful, Todd likely would have clammed up and demanded a lawyer, vs continuing to spill information that would convict him later.

The way the interrogators act is an interrogation tactic. Like you said, it's their job to get a confession, or at least get a story that can be compared against other statements from the same person to check for discrepancies. Yeah, to us it seems rude to the victim. But most of us haven't been interrogators and don't know how difficult the job is. I'm sure they were thinking about how awful those discussions were while they were having them, but anything to keep the guy talking. I'm not saying that there aren't any terrible cops; or course there are. Unless we've been in that position, I think we should think twice before judging.

We have to expand our minds a bit and try to understand that this is a part of a very effective process. The victims may not even get justice without this crucial aspect.

I understand your concern about the victim's feelings about how the interrogation was carried out but it is important for the interrogator to act all buddy buddy with them to trick them into a false sense of security to get the info. It's part of the psychology to make them feel like they have someone sympathizing with them to avoid withholding the info. Feelings are the least concern. It's more important that they get as much of the information as possible. I think the victim would also know that or be informed of this if they show concern about how the interrogator is laughing about what he's saying.
