Finally Understanding EUREKA SEVEN

This was one of those anime that I would be up watching way past my bedtime with no real understanding, or context to speak of. I was always enamored with the art style and aesthetics, not to mention the music was always awesome. I remember watching the show in a kind of mental limbo… due to the seemingly advanced themes that an average 7th grader wouldn’t understand, I often recollect the way it made me feel. Very intimate in a way that probably wasn’t coincidental, I subconsciously look for these same feelings in other anime I think and it’s very rare I find it. This video helped me understand things I didn’t know I needed to understand and reminded me, I definitely have to revisit the series!

With the “Don’t beg for things, do it yourself or else you won’t get anything” I enjoy your view on it but in my interpretation I always felt this quote resonated not with individual characters but with the revolutionary theme of the anime. The Gekkostate state embodies this idea, because together they are creating change and protecting the things they love. The Gekkostate do not wait or beg the military to stop, they take action, organised and intelligent in order to protect Eureka, the scub coral and the planet. They do it together and they do it themselves.

The original is one of my top 5s and well thought out. And Renton growing Into a mature version of himself was personally one of MY favourite aspects. Also Eureka learning about "feelings"

Such a underrated show. It will always have a special place in my heart because it was my gateway to anime. The first love i never had

I discovered Eureka Seven from those old Anime Insider magazines. Then I watched it at my grandmother's house. I like that Renton starts out as a brat that was infatuated with Eureka, and over the course of the two years that transpires in this series, Renton grows up. He starts to understand Eureka better, and he matures. It's a mecha show but the robots aren't the focus most of the time. It's the growth and relationships between the characters, and effects that war have on the world. It's a truly environmentalist anime that tries to be philosophical as well. Episodes are named after actual songs, and they have an A and B side.

I'm so glad to see a video covering this show in depth, as it seems nobody wants to talk about this show despite it being one of the more popular shows of the 00s. Most discussions around the show boil down to "Oh yeah, I remember that show; I liked it a lot," or "That was a weird show." With the climate crisis threatening to drag humanity kicking and screaming back into the dark ages, and with people for the first time in my life suggesting that maybe we should divest from military spending, the show's themes feel even more prescient than ever.

Amazing analysis. I enjoyed the anime as a kid but never really understood the in-depth messages, main themes and exactly what was going on cause it was so cryptic. This clears a lot of the confusion I’ve been trying to solve for YEARS, thank you!

My biggest complaint with the dub is the "don't beg for things" line. Because in the original sub (at least the one I watched) the line was "don't beg for it, earn it. Then it will be granted to you." It's a much more inspiring and thematic concept than "do it yourself, or you won't get anything."

Anime doesn't get much better than E7, and I don't think it ever will. This show is beyond words. Really cool video; the show isn't talked about all that much anymore. Also, you didn't really mention it: but the two PS2 games are probably the only truly good extensions to the franchise, as they're both prequels that fit quite nicely into the narrative of the TV series whilst maintaining the spirit of the show's messages. Ruri and Sumner even show up in E7 episode 45 as a cameo. There's a lot I agree with and disagree with about your video, but you took a genuine stab at the show. There's a lot of merit to the way you discuss the show, more so than the other videos of the show on YT.

I’m currently rewatching eureka seven right now so this was a wonderful surprise! Really cool video dude! You’re content is always so chill yet surprisingly confident sounding. It’s a nice balance that keeps your videos from feeling like fluff while also never coming across as preachy. Keep up the amazing work man.

I watched the series 4 times, once every 3 years and yes the meaning of the series changes every 3 years because my perspective changes every time. :D

oh yeah the anime depicted at 8:38 is Gekiganger III, a 70s-style anime that exists within the universe of the 90s anime Martian Successor Naidesco, and I didn't put in any lower-thirds text indicating where it's from because it seemed like too long of a story to put in one block of text. Gekiganger was often used as a loving parody or critique of the old 70s-style giant robot shows in Naidesco's meta-narrative, so it was the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of a "traditional, hypermasculine giant robot anime" and figured that the footage would work well.

Like a fine wine, this show matures with age and a lot of its subtleties made strictly for adults start to become ever more meaningful and apparent.
And yes, its still has immaculate style and looks incredible to this day. They NAILED the visuals in this series, minus a few blemishes in animation occasionally.

Solid stuff. I really loved the first half with Renton figuring out how to actually think about other people's feelings, but the pacing of the second half and how it seemed to be painting in larger and larger strokes made it hard for me to finish. That and (spoilers for the end of the original series) how they left the kids behind at the very end killed me; I feel like the themes of love are centered around family and opening your heart completely to the people you're kinda stuck with, so to have the end basically say, "Love between adults doesn't ~actually include kids," was pretty disappointing.

The whole thing works because of contrast between two different universes. Original Eureka is a living dream, while life of Ao is harsh and he can only adapt. Also yes, scab coral are literal aliens in the setting.

I always viewed this series as a "coming of age" series with extra bits and pieces. One of my all time favorites

Ah yes Eureka Seven, something compared to EVA many times in the past, but has been milked so much, with low results, that now its more confusing than EVA

I found the opening on spotify and had to confirm with youtube that it was in fact Eureka 7 and it made me cry. We watched it as kids and i loved the anime and the meaning behind it but it was also an anime my brothers and I would watch. This video made me understand the anime better. Opening will always make me nostalgic and cry tho

This is the first time I came across your content and for my first video I definitely loved it. I discovered this series almost exactly one year before your video and it has since become my favorite media ever, because of its aesthetic, characters, world, music and themes. I definitely agree with your statements on what made E7 great, especially since it’s ironically making the original anime more and more relevant over the years, sadly.
I do agree with how cryptic it can be for a new audience though, I personally loved it, and it made me go right back into a rewatching not even a day after having finished it. But while it was incredibly satisfying to learn more and more about this anime over time, it can make a surprisingly high number of people miss out on its themes or even drop the show out of confusion. I really wish the later content had tried to expand on these themes or premises instead but I’m still incredibly grateful I decided to randomly start watching it last year. So, as a science nerd, the "limit of questions" they speak about in this series (if the Scub wakes up and brings its collective consciousness to bear), is actually a real thing. There's a concept in physics that states that if space itself contained too much "information" (quantum or physical objects), space itself would become dense enough to collapse into a singularity. Its called the Bekenstein Bound. Seeing this show from my childhood play with some exceptionally deep physics is such a damn cool thing man.
Also, I've read the Golden Bough (its a real book) and it's essentially the founding text on the study of Anthropology. It examines the relationship between human's understanding of the world around them throughout time, from mysticism, superstition, religion, and finally, science, all being ways that humans have tried to decrypt reality, but also how each society has fallen to using such an understanding to subject each other to horrendous things such as war, slavery, murder, and control through ignorance, and James Frazier, the author, emphasizes how important it is to understand these histories to prevent it all from happening again. A fitting thing for Holland and Dewey, who were supposed to be sons of the family destined to lead humanity into prosperity again, to be reading.

This series has been something I've tried to watch and understand over and over again with no success until recently. This video laid a lot of things bare for me and made sense of a lot of the crazier aspects of this franchise in a concise manner that leaves me wanting to see more.

It's always amazing seeing videos like this about one of my favorite anime of all time. I'll always defend E7 with my entire being and im so happy to always see fans, new and old, of this series. Eureka Seven is my favorite anime of all time. I think it takes 3 watches to fully enjoy the series. First watch is weird and cryptic like you said in the video. The second watch you notice all the foreshadowing and hints sprinkled throughout ,and you finally understand some of the basic concepts you were iffy on in the first watch. On the third, you know everything. You can bask in the beauty of the story and notice its flaws and perfections.

I always loved watching this show on Adult Swim. I never could fully understand what was going on, but the interactions of the characters and the overall messages still resonated with me.

As a kid I vaguely understood what the show was trying to say.
People would complain about the 2nd half when Renton ran away from the Gekko, but it left the deepest impression on me and now I see why.
Kid me viewed it as a love story with strong anti-war messaging and something about the environment -with mechs. Eureka Seven instantly became one of my all time favorites despite not fully understanding it.
Standalone Complex takes the cake for cryptic moral themes imo.

Revisiting this never gets old. Each time I watch, the chills return, taking me back to the magic of my favorite anime, Eureka Seven. I'm hoping that there will be a live-action adaptation and it also stays true to the original storyline. ❤

I just wanted to say that. I hope you'll gain a lot more subscribers.

The theme's, the heart of the VA crew, the music were all perfect for its time, it was a convergence of a kid wanting to pilot mechs with the crew of his dreams. He got his wish and found out 2 things, 1. He found the love of his life, who didn't really notice him until she did then, they not knowing for sure spent the rest of the series not saying their feelings until it truly mattered. 2. Be careful what you wish for, Renton got his wish, to join gecko state! He found it was the drudgery of the life he left behind combined with the terror of combat, which he truly did not realize until the end of season one. Horrified at the death he and gecko state, his heroes, had committed left, going in a walkabout to find himself, bumping into a man and wife who desperately wanted a child but couldn't have one. He was wholeheartedly accepted only to find they were going to destroy gecko state and take Eureka away. Renton made a choice to leave this happy, loving set of parents, the wife crying her heart out as he left to be not with the gecko state once more, but protect the young maiden he fell for. All the while Holland, leader of the gekko never noticed until the last that he, the younger son of the king, was not her chosen love, the boy was all the while pining for a woman long gone, ground a woman that loved him in return.
It has 7 love stories and two love triangles
Hilda and Matthew,
Eureka, Holland and Renton,
Holland and Talho,
Moondoggie, and Gidget,
Dewey, Dominic, and Anemone,
Misha and Keggo,
Rey and Charles.
All the while the gekko being AWOL military with a stolen craft, being surfer bums lfw and surfing the waves and being their own mini families. Renton still being a child himself was placed as a father, being an orphan himself struggles with 3 vodarak kids adopted by his love in recompense for a horrific deed. Even at the end he struggled to win her over, not knowing he had her as she had him when first their eyes met.

Thank you for posting this. Eureka Seven is criminally underrated. It should be counted among one of the greatest animes of all time. Not only because of story/characters/messages of anime are great but the background music of the anime are genius level. Naoki Sato's background score is the greatest anime music of all time in my view. If you don't believe me, watch any vital scene with paying attention to background score. For example when a wounded Eureka jumps from Gekkostate trying to find Renton. The music of Eureka Seven demands its own video.

Thank you for making this video! I feel like this show doesn't get near enough praise. Rewatching it after not having seen it since I was in highschool (I'm almost 30 now lol) opened my eyes to so many more themes that I didn't necessarily pick up on before, but like other comments said, it seems a lot of those themes actually stuck with me even without realizing it. I can't speak highly enough about this show, I mean yeah it has its flaws, but it just touches on so many themes that anime don't usually touch on. Not to mention it's pretty mature in the way it goes about it. Also wanted to note that the similarities with NGE are insane, it definitely draws heavily from Evangelion while having its own spin on things and I really appreciate that.

I've only ever liked the 50 episode series. It literally will make me bawl my eyes out no matter what. It's my most most favorite and touching show ever.

I love mecha series, but eureka seven has different spot and top 5 anime for me. The best part for me is how they depvelop Eureka and Renton character (and anemone too). I like How they make eureka from cold blood soldier to a mature woman (and mom)

I could never bring myself to watch AO after the intro. E7 is one of those shows that went deep for me. Like you, I tried to watch the Dub -- it was airing on Toonami. It wasn't until years later, while deployed in Afghanistan, that I got a bootleg copy and watched the whole thing through. Maybe it was the timing, having that show to come back to and escape in after missions, but it lives on my hard drive to this day next to Cowboy Bebop, FMA, and a bunch of Miazaki Films. I appreciate this analysis! This explains why I enjoyed the show so much more on my second viewing. I feel compelled to love the followups conceptually, but agree they are plagued by some exceptionally strange choices. I notice the video kind of skims over the third Hi-Evolution movie, did you have an opinion on that one? I found it to be the most compelling thing they've put together since the original series, but it's surreal that the potentially standalone meat of the story is sandwiched between an opening and ending that are completely incoherent if you haven't watched literally everything

I'm glad I could find videos like this. Eureka Seven is one of those anime that made it mainstream but still manage to be underrated. It has such depth to its themes that you honestly can only see if you watch through it multiple times.
I know it's a running joke for anime fans to not have a concrete answer when they are asked, "what's your favorite anime", but after watching *YET ANOTHER* Eureka Seven analysis video, it's safe to say that *this* is my favorite anime of all time.

I watched Eureka Seven as a teen on Adult Swim methinks. For some reason it never quite left my mind and I've been thinking about it lately quite a lot. The music, animation and art-style really stood out among many other Anime shows at the time, the only other ones that came to mind in terms of dripping with personality and style included those such as Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. Yeah, the music and art left an imprint in my mind for sure. That being said, there was more than meet's the eye regarding this Anime. Now I caught on the environmentalism message pretty early on, the teenage love story and emotional growth, yet there was a lot of context and references that I seemed to be missing to make sense of the bigger picture. I was confused for a long time and this did derail my enjoyment especially near the end, not to mention that some of the characters were quite difficult to deal with throughout the show. But, it was still a good experience overall.
I've never seen environmentalism tackled like that in Anime before. Nah, I don't remember seeing it tackled that way. I wonder why... Maybe I haven't watched enough shows, I don't know. Though at first I had found it to be a bit immature, it was surprisingly mature thematically. In some ways the message is still pertinent, or maybe even more pertinent than it was fifteen years ago. If we destroy the environment due to ignorance or greed, we will effectively be destroying ourselves in the process. The only way forward is education, balance, sustainability and peaceful coexistence.
For a long time now I've viewed the character of Renton and Eureka symbolizing the peaceful union and coexistence between human beings and mother nature, i.e. thereby symbolizing the hope for the future, with the added message that love knows no boundaries and that we can overcome many obstacles in life if we stay strong and don't give up on what we are fighting for. Now that I'm older I may in fact give it a rewatch as well.

Holland was trying to keep the dream going for his life and world as he knows it. Explains why pocket full of rainbows ending was quite weird

Watched this my senior year of college and it will always have this melancholy, nostalgic tinge to it because of my trepidation at having to take the next step after college. Also, just looked up the bluray and it’s actually affordable. Haha, I sold my complete dvd set for an absurd amount of money back in 2013 or so.

This is one of my first animes ever watched I freaking love this drama/action anime

They ( the staff ) put so many things in one anime and it did break my mind when I watched it in 2010 (I was about 14 at that time), but I still loved it. The evolution of characters is great, that's why I consider Eureka seven a masterpiece even for someone who has zero interest in anything but 'boy meets girl'.

I rewatched it last summer, I liked when I watched it as a kid but I recently realised knew i was missing so much. It was very nostalgic but I didn't notice all these themes as a kid, it's jumped up to being one of favourites, definitely in my top ten anime of all time

Yesterday I finished watching the series for the second time in decades!
I had to research if more people felt like I did with this series and I was not disappointed with this video.
Disappointment is all Bones studio did after the first series... As already explained in the video.
Eureka 7 wasn't the first anime I watched, but it was the first to get me fully into the world of anime... Like really deep! In a time, where if you wanted to get fully involved, you had to leave the television and discover forums online and describe even more anime that weren't televised outside of Japan... Eureka was the one who would open that door for me. It was such a thrill to see the complete series on a pirate page, that I started a search for animes that will affect me in the same way. Not only combat and action anime, but with a really good history background, originality, esthetic etc... And boy, after 20 years, I have become quite an otaku. 😂 And it all started thanks to Eureka.
I would love for the creators to see this video and rethink the approach of the story for a future adaptation. because something tells me that still getting away my love from the series. If they did a remake of the original, with better explanation and new storytelling methods, it would have as much potential as the best anime of today.

I always tought that the RentonEureka love story was something else. Now I understand what I view as important and I know understand better why I loved it so much.
I just wanted, as everybody else, to know a little bit more of what happend after the series ends... with just a glimpse I will be satisfied.

I’m a year late but great video! I really loved Eureka Seven in my teens and this makes me want to revisit it.
As for AO I feel like in retrospect it’s easy to see certain attitudes in the original that show a more neoliberal attitude hiding under the radical aesthetics. Take for instance the show’s homage to the computer tech industry in Jobs and Woz. The former especially being the Californian ideology incarnate.
This doesn’t necessarily detract from the message of the original, but it does make it seem like the writer’s room that would cast a sequel as part of a tech startup styled high gloss NGO feel a little less surprising.
