Back in Early 2020, we tried to deploy a new version of our all NVMe video editing server dubbed "New Whonnock". It was a complete disaster due to what appeared to be a design flaw with the storage drives we purchased for it. This time around, we've built a new PCIe Gen 4 NVMe server from the ground up with the help of Liqid, Sabrent, Micron, AMD, FS.com, and Infinite Cables - let's just hope it actually works this time.

It would be really interesting if you could do a follow up on this and go into what happened with New Whonnock, why the deployment failed, the issues you encountered, and the reasoning behind the selection of the Liqid and why you expected different results from a server based on their ecosystem.

I'd love to know the details. Stuff like that is a wonderful opportunity to learn from.
The "handle" on the back is NOT designed for carrying it. It is designed for sliding the server back in from the back of the rack. I have seen photos of Dell servers with the handles that broke off, destroying it.

The only time I've seen one broken off was from UPS delivering the server, I assume based on the condition of the box, with a cannon. That said the metal it's mounted to definitely isn't meant to hold a fully loaded server. On a lot of Dell servers it's magnesium which will give you no indication it's overloaded and about to snap.

Normal managers and business owners would just keep the archaic network that has low end networking hardware from the 90s then constantly complain their employees aren't working fast enough.

@@STriderFIN77 Exactly, while i do have older DDR3 rofl, i run it at CL7 at 1866mhz. Which is actually less latency than DDR4 3200mhz @CL14 (But less bandwidth i know). Makes for snappy systems when u have little latency.

RAID parity should not be used as data protection in the age of ransom ware. It’s only good for maintaining system uptime. If they have a spare drive on hand, they are doing it the right way.

Props to whoever edited this video. It's little things like the overlays of the processor and memory that really help enhance a lot. They could have easily been left out and nobody would have noticed but the editor took the time to put them in.

Currently unRAID after seeing it on LTT about a year ago, and before that it was running Ubuntu Server for ~9 years apart from a brief period when I had OpenMediaVault on there. I'm very happy with unRAID as a NAS and the excellent Docker and VM support: I now run the old Ubuntu Server build the server used to run as a VM on unRAID, which works perfectly
@@Schnabulation Gen 7, it's starting to show it's age now (VMs are a struggle and it's not exactly fast for Docker apps) but it does the job. I need to replace it, but it's hard to justify the price when the Microservers used to be so cheap and it still works!

@@adropher People got fedd up with Wallstreet and their shortselling (betting on the downfall of a business and manipulating the marked to make it happen) and just teamed up to buy the stock and that in turn skyrocketed the shares-price - until the corrupt companies shut down all private buying of those stocks.
And during a livestream people were saying they are currently buying shares and Linus made the promise (arguable stupid on the internet) to buy 5x what people spent on SuperChat.

I remember watching Linus when he did low-effort unboxing videos at NCIX. The business he's built all these years later is amazing. Often when channels make it big, they either stick with what they've been doing and eventually fizzle out, or they ride the KRplus algorithm train until active subscribers bail.
He's managed to keep his channel really fresh, namely with the diverse crowd of employees he's brought onboard. At this point, there's something for just about everyone on LTT, so great job guys.

To be fair, this isnt really enterprise/DC level stuff. Its high performance sure, but still essentially just a small handful of tech.
Enterprise grade really starts when you get to true SAN networks, multi site replication/auto failover setups, or large scale virtualization/VSAN etc.

Watching this and I'm weeping. Man, I'd love some of this tech in our server rooms. A lot of our servers have only just been moved over to 1Gbps network and here's Linus ripping at 100Gbps (with potential to 200Gbps). If any of our 30 video editors see this there's gonna be a riot at work :D All their mass storage is still sitting on old school 3.5" 10,000 rpm drives, not even SSD!

@@baranobama5375 Likely not going to hurt anything. All that stuff had to survive the parcel system to get there. Would have made the chassis a little ugly though. You should have see how my NetApp DiskShelf was shipped. Zero protection in an cardboard box that was not the right size so it was stuffed in diagonally on both X and Y axis. Naturally, it was all banged up and bent. Still worked fine.
