I disagree. I think he cared ALOT what people thought of him. He just didn't know how to deal with it and acted out. He cried when he was voted DPoY. He cried when he was inducted into the HoF. Being acknowledged, by his peers, for his accomplishments mattered.

I get the same impression from Rodman that he does care. In a way he seems like an inverted person, kept to himself and had his own circle of friends that he felt comfortable around. There's a lot going on with that guy trying to find an identity. I think when his sister's would dress him up as a girl when he was young sent him on a somewhat twisted trajectory.

It's true. (On average) he kept Malone 2 or 3 points below his standard scoring average, and those 2/3 points less were often the difference in those 2 close series. I also remember Rodman saving Pippen from criticism when he missed crucial free throws in important games vs Sonics and Pacers, but Dennis collected the offensive rebound.

you are wrong. that is just sport. do you realize how other fields party and also work hard? there is no effing bigger and ruthless field than finance and america is the top of the chart. money never sleeps and you close a lid you would have lost a bil or made a bil. so dennis turning up a game after banging 15 hookers( which magic did by the way) and having some tequila shots is no big deal( chamberlin had that routine).

To be fair, back then they allowed the defense to get away with commiting more fouls against the offensive player.
Now, they allow the offense to get away with more
"illegal" moves like lifting, travel, etc... while also being hella strict when calling fouls by the defense against the offensive players.
So in short:
It's easier to defend back then but harder to score.
Now, it's harder to defend but easier to score.

But nonetheless, regardless of era, there are those that do it right and at an elite level regardless of ref era bias.
I do still believe players like Jordan, Pip, Rodman, and maybe even Stockton, can still do well on defense in today's era. Sure, they wont "impose their will" as much as they did in their era, but that's just how much skilled they are. They'd still be quite effective, although with adjustments to their game and effeciency.
Similarly, guys like MVP Rose, Curry and Kyrie could still run circles around guys from the old era--of course, with a few adjustments as well to their level of efficiency.

He was an underrated passer too. Especially on outlets after defensive rebounds helping to get the offense started. Everybody who played in the triangle offense had to be a good passer so it really showed when he played with the Bulls

Funny how ppl say he isn't an all-time great because he doesn't score. Yet nobody ever figured out a way to put all their energy into keeping him off the offensive glass.

But this is the thing, Rodman was a scorer in college. He changed his game with the Pistons, they didn't need another scorer, they needed another defender, Rodman gave them that.

Another defensive specialist who's overlooked is Bill Russell. I say that because Jordan is considered the greatest, but he wasn't the greatest at anything. Jordans offense brought 6 titles and 2 3-peats. While Russell's defense brought 11 titles on 12 attempts including 10 straight.

Imagine a scottie pippen in the late 80s and early 90s as the 60s went on but for 2 other players. Also the celtics focused much like the pistons on a deadly, efficient defense. Not necessarily their destructive offense.
I understand your points on the subject and respect your opinion what bill russel did is amazing. In my own opinion I don't put much stock in the amount of rings someone has as a end all and be all. Yes it has some impact but as basketball is very much a team sport one individual player can't win a match even if he were to score 80+ points and make 10 blocks a game.

That's exactly right. Defense is half the game. Mark Aguirre averaged over 25 ppg in Dallas and was one of the top scorers in the league as was Adrian Dantley. Aguirre benched himself in Detroit because he knew how special Rodman was. The guy was well past his prime with the Bulls, in his mid 30's, and was still BY FAR the best rebounder and defender in the league. In many ways he was a smaller Bill Russell. Russ was better at controlling the paint and help defending in the half-court but Rodman could guard all 5 positions at an elite level and also was a dominant transition defender with his speed and motor.

First and foremost - he never for 1 SECOND on the court concerned himself with having to score so of course he would be in position to get more rebounds than other. Honestly - do you think if Shaq, Barkley, Robinson, Malone ... the list goes on and on NEVER considered scoring, only getting in postion for rebounds that they couldn't have had similar rebounding production? Rodman was my favorite his entire career, he had multiple double digit scoring seasons before leaning into his persona and that was just off put backs and running the floor and contrary to popular belief could actually shoot a little, multiple games of multiple 3s with the bulls. Obviously it'd be sweet to have 5 versatile threats on both ends, but also imagine if James Harden had Dennis Rodman balancing out that squad?!
