Excellent, I should have thought of this sooner. I've had a FLIR adaptor for years and use it for my mechanical engineering firm to see envelope thermal bridging, overheating equipment, etc.. I will now be doing the hovering fingers thing on keypads and looking for that new FLIR that looks like a case. The older models, like mine, stick out the USB port and are much more apparent, but only to someone who knows what it is.

If you sanitize your hand right after it’ll be fine, and if you can’t sanitize your hand right away you shouldn’t directly touch the keypad with fingers at all.

A habit I have made for years is to lightly touch but not push buttons before and after the actual pin code. This was to make it difficult for anyone looking afar from figuring out the code. Nice to know it will stop this as well.
I just barely got a debit card, and whenever I enter my pin I make slightly exaggerated arm movements to make it look like I'm inputting numbers even when I'm not.
I do the same at ATMs and my garage door keypad lol. Very effective in the rare case that anyone is actually snooping
i used to do that, too, and push a few extras after, but the halfwits that make the machines made them start beeping really loudly when you push them which defeats the purpose, since any shoulder surfer can tell which key press is real now. like are they *trying* to help thieves?

That's what I first thought too, I mean who cares if someone finds out your PIN, it doesn't mean anything if they don't also have all your card details or your card itself. It just seems like people are being paranoid about it for no reason.

I love using my Android (Nexus) phone every time I'm in the store where I can take advantage of Google Wallet. There's never a time where I don't have people immediately thinking it's an iphone I tell them obviously not, but you will eventually get that technology. Unless they wait so long another technology replaces NFC and they try to break out like its new, as if we haven't already had that function. lol But thanks for the heads up this is very useful information.
I blew some girls mind at Petco the other night paying with Google Wallet. I love using any time I can too. People are amazed it isn't available in more places.
It's pissing me off that we have not had the uptake over here in the uk of NFC.
What is worse is that we have had contactless payment which *IS* NFC on debit and credit cards for ages.
The nexus S was the first phone to have NFC but partly due to apple being arseholes there has not been a push to mobile payments.
There have been a bunch of phone banking apps that let you pay people by phone number its a tiny push to make it NFC capable.
Hopefully with apple possibly putting NFC in the next iphone it might be the kick in the nuts the banks etc need to push it to phones.
In Sweden we have a company named SEQR that lets you pay in stores with iPhone, Android or Windows Phone. It uses both QR or NFC. I use QR code instead of NFC, faster. With NFC you have to find that exact spot under the phone.

Rene D if you have SOMEONES pin you can run off a fake card and go to an ATM and draw out loads of DOSH from there account every day until you get your bank statement in and see your diminished nest egg has been hemoraging your money daily but alot of banks have cameras pointing at the face of the user from behind the screen and the time is in the video so they can look up the withdrawals an see who the perp is who took your DOSH and the cops can put them where they belong hope this helps you to make sure you keep your pin hidden from view I only use two fingers as my four numbers are repeated with is great ,like 7474 so if you can change your pin do it its not 7474 by the way have a great day

On door entry systems where the same code is punched in over and over again, you can see oily residue from the finger presses. you can then try different combinations of those keys.
I remember testing a Flir camera. I spotted a man walking with his dog about a mile distance from me. The dog stopped to urinate and I could literally see the heat signature left by the steam rising.
My response to Mark:
Orrrrrr, you could just wear gloves and not worry at all ... orrrrr, you could just pay cash ... etc etc etc
but this wasn't a consumer camera, was it?
because for a MILE distance you need at least 640px resolution or a zoom objective, and those cost at least 5000 bucks

This question is more complex than you can think. Pin code could be longer than 4 digits. Could be. But few ATMs an payment forms over the internet support it.

Thank you mark ever since i got a debit cardive been rubbing my hand on the keypad everytime
I was always told to touch all the buttons, especially for digicodes for doors (garage door, front door, etc.). Because we don't tend to change our codes often, we can wear out the buttons, so after a while, it can be easy to guess the numbers in the code and just try out all the combinations.
Touching all the buttons means that you'll wear them all out, and you don't need to press other buttons because the hands heat and oils are enough to wear them out ^^
Simple solution: Put warmers under rubber buttons so when the infrared camera sees it, its all gonna be red.
That would be pretty expensive, though. An easier idea would be to have a metal keypad (or to heat the store to human body temperature)

Back when this video was made, tap to pay was already widespread in many countries, which completely avoids the issue.
I'm too tight to use tap. They put two and a half percent on the bill here.
There are still places in the US where tap to pay is not available or does not work.
Cool so now you have the pin number.
Still need to the actual card number and security code on the back to buy something online

Card skimmer. The card is the LEAST secure thing of the entire process.
A thief puts a skimmer on a gas pump, the mark swipes their card, the skimmer takes the number of the card, they put their super duper secure 4 digit pin in or their zip code.
Bad guy comes back with an IR camera and retrieves the skimmer. Bingo bingo bad guy has your card and your pin and the victim doesn’t even realize what happened.
Mostlyharmless1985 well tbh and a nice and pre setup way but for on the fly I believe they’re a device out there that can read the information from cards that have the wireless option like when you wireless auto pay on device that have it. Most cards have that by now so it’s easier then the way you mentioned
