CLIP DESCRIPTION:
At lunchtime, each member of the Breakfast Club brings out food that fits their personality.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. "When you grow up, your heart dies," Allison proclaims in one of the film's many scenes of soul-searching, and, judging from the adults depicted in the film, the teen audience may very well agree. Released in a decade overflowing with derivative teen films, The Breakfast Club has developed an almost cult-like status.

I love how Bender is making fun of everyones lunch to disguise the fact that he himself doesn't HAVE a lunch.
ikr. Everyone's lunch speaks to their home lives. Brian's perfectly neat sandwiches, crusts cut off and all. Andrew's entire kitchen cupboard, piling it on, the pressure to bulk up for wrestling. Claire's sushi reflects her rich girl lifestyle. Allison chucking her sandwich meat and making up her own concoction, shows that her parents ignore her, they didn't know what she wanted on a sandwich. And as stated, Bender has no lunch, cos' his parents don't care, they see him as a burden.
I made the same observation, so this movie is much deeper than most people think...(I guess that your clothes and lunch tell quite a lot about yourself without having you saying a word at all) And just for the record, I was brought up in a middle-class hard working family. So I guess that I would have been a mix of Brian and Andrew's character, since I was sports freak at the time.
Wow, such insight.
It could also be an in site on how they view themselves, I doubt their parents played a role in their food. Bender is chaos and doesn't care so he doesn't bring a lunch. Claire is uptight and cares about what people think of her hence eating something cultural. Andy is a stereotypical wrestler so he needs to eat to maintain his figure. Brian is an uptight nerd so he is about organization. Allison is neutral and thus eats what she only cares for.
Caesar Seriona the reason why they view themselves the way they do has everything to do with the parents and how they’re raised
I like how the food they eat also represents their characters.
Peter What about Bender? XD
@SgtBaker16 That means he has no food because his parents doesnt care about him? How sad
Considering his father is abusive I think it safe to say that it was not his choice to go without lunch
@@agirl4677 ~ Considering that his father gave him a carton of cigarettes as a Christmas gift, I doubt they cared if he ate or not...
My film teacher pointed out the connection between their lunches and their personalities /character. Also the connection between each car that drops off each character at the beginning.
omg when Bender gave Allison a coke i realized something
he doesnt bullies her in the entire movie, because he knows they are almost in the same situation

YES she’s the only one he doesn’t give a snarky remark like he does Andrew Brian and especially Claire
He probably has a weird kind of respect for her, for just being herself and not giving in to people's expectations of what she should be.
@@tracieh215 that too
They are both neglected. He is probably physically abused and she is more emotionally neglected by parents. Both hurt and I think he can understand that much. Besides it's not fun for a bully to attack someone who won't give a damn about anything or anyone

Something tells me that the reason Allison eats such a strange lunch is because her parents are so neglectful that as a kid she always had to make her own food with whatever she could find and her diet never changed.
Yup!
Alison's parents were the extreme opposite of Brian's parents. Extreme neglect vs extreme protection and control. Brian's parents are the kinda of folks who make their child grow up to be afraid of everything whereas Alison's folks are the ones that make their child grow up to feel low self esteem and worthless. Both bad just different outcomes
They make her food, but you can tell it was not something she liked and probably never asked what she liked.
Except she had a reasonably healthy sandwich to begin with.
wow, that's so insightful
The subtlety of Bender making fun of everyone else's lunch to hide the fact that he didn't have one was genuinely some of the most fantastic character writing I've seen. Each of their lunches is a representation of the character themselves and I love this film

One of my friends at school was a gymnast and his lunches looked very similar to that
Fun fact: Claire’s lunch was sushi, which wasn’t in the script. She was only supposed to have pasta salad. The idea for sushi was thought up by Ally Sheedy. Because in the 80s, sushi was a food for rich people.

Andrews Lunch is literally someone's shopping list: 3 Sandwiches, a quart of milk, a bag of chocolate chip cookies, a family-size bag of potato chips, an apple, and a banana.
He is carb loading. He is a wrestler and needs a lot of carbs to put on weight/bulk up.
Can he finished the whole lunch?
Sushi in the 80's was much rarer and was considered "rich people's food" (which of course is why Claire is the one eating it).
.
P Conservatism oh

Oh. Now I get it.
@Kevin Prima It's still unusual.
Am I the only one that thinks its sweet of Bender to throw a Coke for Alison?
Well, the Cokes were for all of their asses. Someone had to throw her one.
the way she catches it
I wonder if they would still add that scene without coke money for product placement.
Eitherway I like the little details it eludes to, besides buy coke.
Xiomara Videz It's because Bender and Alison have sympathy for each other. After all both are social misfits in the movie's school universe, back in the days when punks, gothics, rockers and metal music fans were viewed as weird. The younger generations today may not know this but the so-called "dark scene" or "gothic & punk scene" (mostly represented in Germany today) were still considered outsiders in the 1980s. Punk, Metal, Gothic, even satanic folks, came out of the underground and had their mainstream success in the 1990s and early 2000s, also thanks to successful bands like Nirvana (Punk), Metallica (Metal), you name it, and cyberpunk movie series such as The Matrix. These days in the 2010s and upcoming 2020s some of the darker and alternative lifestyle people have split up again and went back to the underground, dwelving in reptile worship and exploration of horror movies. There are so many different and individual people in the dark scene, it's hard to put them all in one basket anyway.
@Kevin Prima facts
I love how Bender throws a Coke to Allison without saying a word. Its some unspoken understanding. This is one of my all time favorite movies. I have it on DVD. I was a kid in the 80's and this is very accurate. Thanks.
What’s even better is she doesn’t even look at the Coke can when she catches it. It’s like automatic “Yep!…Thanks!…”. The pure mechanics of the gesture is marvelous!…
I was an '80s teenager, and I NEVER forgot this scene! Good catch, Allison!
So Andy’s Dad gave him a whole buffet so he can gain more pounds for wrestling
Claire’s parents gave her very prestigious meal (at least by comparison)

Mr Peaches Latour Anything is filling depending on your appetite though!
it's still fucking unusual where I come from. In working class rural Ireland, no one brought fucking sushi to my school & that was the late 1990s, early 2000s. And I think that would hold true not only for all of Ireland, but England too.
I love how Bender decides to stop being a douche for a second to genuinely question what Claire is eating 😂
Great movie ( came out while I was in high school ). Just wondering why Mr. Vernon didn't sit in the library the entire time with the students instead of sitting in a office that was separate from the library? I guess this would allow the students to talk more and to carry out their antics.
Sounds like something Ryan George needs to address when he inevitably does the Pitch Meeting for this movie.

2:22 Bender acts tough and steals his lunch, but doesn't take anything, while also giving him a coke
In this scene, we learn lots about their home lives. Claire is eating sushi (a food that was rare and expensive at the time, showing her parents wealth), Andrew is eating lots to gain strength and muscle (showing how his dad pressures him athletically), Allison is making her own concoction (showing how her parents ignore her), Brian is eating a nutritious lunch, all groups are represented (showing that he is educated and healthy) and Bender doesn’t have a lunch. This shows that his parents don’t care and see him as a burden
But as a wrestler, he wouldn't eat that much food. He certainly wouldn't have the junk food items. If he was a football player that would make sense.

Ti My superbad, juno, Napoleon dynamite and etc... all quality movies about being a teenager
SSJRen Man Breakfast Club is a movie dealing with struggles that the 80's generation of kids were going through such as peer pressure and being labeled and parental issues. Superbad is a 70's retro film that isn't speaking to anyone but the younger versions of the people writing it (still a good movie but not the same), Juno spends almost all of its time not speaking to a certain generation. Yes, she's a pregnant teen but everything about her personality breaks the stereotype. Napoleon Dynamite is also a retro comedy that was mainly about strange people living in a small town. None of these films have the same connection with their audience like the breakfast club did.
Ti My superbad was a movie about having a best friend without realizing it, a feeling of anxiety best friends have before being separated because of college.. so to cope with it you try to get laid, get drunk, be the popular kid for once but realize at the end that all you ever needed was some fucking balls to ask the girl out and acknowledge that you are going to miss the time you had with your best friend, all done in a comedic and vulgar way (which in highschool stays pretty true to how is should be) but more so realistic to modern day time. something a lot of highschool kids feel and something i can relate with. the ending had them go there separate ways at the mall with the girls they were into and in real life most kids in highschool that were best friends move on and stop talking to the friend that meant most to you in that awkward time.. the comment is already too long.. a "connection" with the mass dont mean shit.. its how it affected you. if you base the quality of a movie due to how popular it is or the "connection" you speak of to the mass than you yourself is more shallow.

Yep. EVERYBODY Loved this movie and the message. Yet the same cliques went on long past that, with the same disdain represented for the other cliques, and the same bullying. I've heard it's better for the most part now, but if so it's still a recent development. I was the outcast in high school. It wasn't until I got out of high school that I ended up hanging out with the stoners, the jocks, and the preps and pretty much fit in with everyone after that. We'd all like to think that things changed everything that day, but in the real world....... It would actually be pretty much like they said it would earlier. Andrew and Allison would probably try to make a go of it. But how long is he going to be able to put up with his friends griefing him about dating the freak show. She's never going to be the preppy girl just because she was dressed up in preppy clothes. The best you could hope for is a casual nod passing in the halls, and no longer picking on or putting others down.
It’s open ended but most likely got together whenever they weren’t with their friends or probably left their group friends seeing as they’re all happier together than they were with the crowd they were around

Both of them had their lunch in bags that did not look like they had any kind of ice pack in them. So, did they have Saturday Detention followed by Sunday Food Poisoning?
Food usually doesn't go bad that quickly, and most ppl's immune systems ---/white blood cells killers will manage to take care of the bacteria
Maybe there was a fridge somewhere that they put their lunches or something.
Back in the 80s, people didn't carry around fancy lunchbags and ice packs. They just took the risk woth food at room temperature, not even knowing the risk really. Before iceboxes were invented, milk used to sit on the windowsil in the winter and that was it. We are very much lucky to have the knowledge that food can go bad without refridgeration, and have probably coddled our immune systems to not have to deal with food going spoiled out of fridge, whereas back then they could probably tolerate it more.
Just today I had macaroni salad with mayo in the dressing that sat our for 6 hours yestersay before getting refridgerated, and today it tasted fine. I think people maybe overreact a bit too much on this nowadays. Double shift life, my ice packs don't last the whole time, and I am somehow surviving 🤷♀️
@@Medietos Uh.......... I seem to recall in the movie that their detention started at around 8:00am? Assuming they ate lunch at 12:00pm, that means that RAW FISH was sitting at room temperature for AT LEAST four hours (taking into account travel time to the school, packing time, etc). I don't care if you're super human, nobody should be eating RAW fish that has been sitting outside of a fridge/freezer for that long. GROSS.
EDIT - I looked up the clip after posting this comment since I was curious myself. Their detention started at 7:06am. So that's 5+ hours of room temperature fish that you're hypothetically okay with eating. DISGUSTING.

j SAME LMAO
If you said that to her, she would probably stare at you for about 10 seconds and then do it.
Omg i thought the exact same...haha
the way she swishes it about in her mouth makes you think
Such a timeless movie!!! This scene always makes me laugh, how Bender slaps Brians hand, how Allison gets creative with her lunch, and how Andrew packed a whole buffet for lunch.
I like when Brian tries to reach his lunch and bender slaps his hand away 🤣🤣😂
I was HIRED to AUDIT incoming cocaine addicts FRANK.
My favorite part is when Andy unloads his lunch and literally takes out the whole grocery store, haha!
Mavs101101 not "literally"
hes a wrestler, needs a lot of calories to maintain his physique and strenght
POPCORN that’s at least 2500 calories right there. You don’t need that many calories in one meal unless you’re a 300lb bodybuilder or eat once a day. If you eat 3 of those meals a day, you’ll get fat especially for someone as small as andy
I doubt he could burn through all three meals like that in one day; He'd be bloated if that was to be the case.
Mavs101101 As a former competitive swimmer, I can tell you that I used to be able to eat like that and burn it off in no time flat due to having the metabolism of a hummingbird. Nowadays I don’t dare try-hell, I CAN’T eat like that! At my age, all I have to do is look at food and I gain weight! GODDAMN YOU, PERIMENOPAUSE!!!! 🤬🤬🤬
I love Claire's sushi set. Especially the wooden serving tray. Since watching that scene, it's made me want one.
I love to own a Bento box like Claire’s!
me2 :D
I've been asking my mom can she liked buy me some sushi for school but she keep refusing maybe the fact that Sushi is raw and I can't have it in my lunchbox for long unless I put it in a refrigerator so it won't rot.
I call it cute and classy! Why have a boring lunch when you can bring it in style??💗💗💗
Boy,,the movie changed your life
“Can I eat?”
“I don’t know. Give it a try.”
“It’s Apple Juice”
“I can read……”
Gets me everytime 😂
“Well Bryan, this is a very nutritious lunch. All the food groups are represented.” I died 😂😂😂😂
Did your mother marry Mr. Rodgers?
Uh, no, Mr. Johnson.
Ah
I wish Saturday detentions were really like this.
That's what I was thinking
+Matthew Arenson i know detention wasn't like this but if it was i might have tried to get a saturday detention when i was in school
+Joshua Harner I had Saturday detention during high school once; it was nothing like this because, one, we were in the cafeteria, two, there were a lot of students serving Saturday detention, and three, there was no Bender, so detention was really bland.
good thing i stayed a good student then
I went to New Trier the High school that started this. Its manly siting in a class room working on homework or just drawing or reading books from 8:00am to like 12:00.
I love Allison’s diabetes sandwich omg 😭😭
I don't! It grossed me out, just like it grossed everyone else out!
ur just a hater smh my head 🙄🙄🙄🐟🙄
I'm not, YOU are!
Judd Nelson deserves more recognition, what a phenomenal actor
Judd Nelson originally was going to get more recognition... But he blew it, because John Hughes fired him after the film for p!ssing him off and harassing Molly Ringwald while staying in character off-set.
There was originally going to be a sequel called *The Lunch Club* where the whole cast returns. That movie was cancelled and reworked into Ferris Bueller's Day Off because of Nelson.
2:36 slaps his hand, “It’s apple juice!” “I can read!”
*2:34*
@@hmph3262 I can see
I crack up every time
Makes me laugh every time 😭😂
Cap'n Crunch sandwich with Pixie Stix, hahaha love it.
oh i thought the pixie stix stuff was cocaine
Max Power fun fact, that actress was actually a really healthy person. She got sick from eating that sandwich and got jittery for a while. She got better the next day though lol.
Max Power creativity at its finest
Dont forget the pepper jack cheese, gross as hell.
Max Power diabetes
2:35 Bender smacking Brian’s hand makes me laugh every time!!
The part when Clair says can I eat and bender said I don't know give it a try, I remember my grandma busting out laughing at that part 😂
I don't know why, but I keep laughing at Andrew's sandwich constantly dropping its lettuce in about every shot it's in! The timing of it dropping as he looks at Bender "What's your problem?" is just perfect somehow! Even Bender laughed a bit when it fell out.
Great now i can't unsee it. Thank you!
Wonder how many takes it took to have it fall just right at the perfect time!
Bender's expressions are priceless!
Lol, Yeah he's like, wtf !
All the lettuce falling out of Andrew sandwiches just kills me.
2:35 He hit his hand faster than the speed of sound 😂😂
It's kinda sad that Alison & John would rather spend their Saturdays in detention... their home life is unsatisfactory 😔
It really is.
Its just a movie
And bender was actually suppose to be there for pulling a fire alarm
@@steveo84207 yeah but the movie is implying that he's acting up in part because he rather be in detention than at home
True. Vernon was only giving John what he wanted when he assigned all those detentions to him.
1:21 You can tell that lettuce wasn't intended to fall, because of the way Bender smirks afterwards lmao
(Edit; this is the most likes I've ever recieved thank u all :), also Bender smirking when the lettuce falls means he broke character and they kept it in the film)
Wheres Rengar I don’t see him smirk wdym
@@skylartrompeter3235 you can see him start to smile
Ok but why would that be intentional
Rawr Xd Lol exactly
How about the second lettuce?
Allison is the best character😂❤✨
Yes 130%
Nah, that's Bender
Legend has it Allison's salami/ham is still on the floor to this day.
YUCK! That piece of meat looked "dead!"
This is part of the list of Greatest Movies Ever Made. A movie where you're entertained even though there's no explosions, no gore, no CGI of any kind. Just actors and actresses being simple teens in detention. Here we are now in 2020 and this movie still has a major hold on us. I dare any director to try and make a movie that can hold our attention as this one can now
Agree
A Director: Challange Accepted
*BREAKFAST CLUB: THE REBOOT* [with an all-star female cast]
Good movie but not one of the best
@@jaimelannister1797 Revenge of the Sith is the best.
Dude stfu xD
I love how when Claire explains what sushi is Bender looks like his reality is being altered
And what about Andrew and Brian's facial expressions?
HAHAH!! (Bad For POS Bender!)
Reality bender
Honestly the perception of sushi in the 80s feels similar to the perception of beef tartare/raw beef in present time
When he asks, he doesn't seem like he wants to criticize her food, rather he looks really intrigued.
Consummate actors.....every one of them. This movie still illicits reactions and emotions for me..... 36 years later. THATS a good movie!!
This is John Hughes at his classic best. The performances here are pretty spot on. This will always remain as one of the quintessential films of the 1980's.
Be honest, we all have that one friend who’s like Andrew
How do you mean?
I don't have a friend like that. Because I am Andrew. Seriously, I bring a one man picnic into work for lunch & buy a whole 16 inch pizza for my self if we're getting pizza.
I am Andrew, I bring an unopened pack of Oreos, peanut butter ( for some reason ), a jug of water, rice, my viand, junk food, sometimes Nutella if I'm lucky ,extra money for more food, practically anything else delicious and edible, and extra money for more food. I give some to my classmates sometimes though...
i'm that friend ahah
LOL I clown on friends like Andrew bringing that much food but in a lighthearted way :) and I will gladly mooch hahah
Allison's wink at 2:18 😂😉
yea that wink
+Lovely Graser All these years and I never noticed. Thanks!
+Lovely Graser Wow...how did I not notice that as a wink?! I thought she blinked. xD
i love her xD
Cailey Murphy sameeeeeeeeee
Allison is so relatable, I wasn't neglected but I was the quirky one and introverted.
2:37 he is rubbing his hand because it hurts from the slap it’s so subtle yet hilarious
-Did your Mom marry M.Rogers?
-No, M.Johnson
HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
I died dude😂😂😂
Chloe Cui boy
Chloe Cui 😂😂😂
Well, it is a good answer to give back.
Keoh: Are you an American?
Allison tosses the pimento loaf over her shoulder and it lands on the modern art sculpture, sticks briefly, then peels off.....gold!
Gestapo Pussyranch
Never gets old.
I wonder where it landed....
3:00 when he said Mr Johnson, Bender didn’t even need to make fun, the joke was already done for him lol
All you need to know is John Hughes IS A GENIUS. Even Home Alone while treated as that "Christmas Movie" everyone's scene. I've never felt so connected to a story, universe, or character as much as the one's John created. Imagine his films today if he were alive. RIP
I am the only one paying attention on how the way he hit his hand 😂
slothgirl123 _ 😂😂😂 nope
Pretty sure you’re not.
My favourite part lol
Exactly it was like "BAM"!
no. i kept replaying that part and just laughing so much at how hard he hit his hand 🤣
0:49 - 1:09 is sooo me when I am allowed to pack my own lunch.
Same.
SAME but twice as much
that's me at work my peers are always "damn you always eat healthy" lol.
same here
I wish
You like sugar, huh?
Allison: "Is there sugar in Cap'n Crunch?"
Yes
Allison: "Then, yes!"
Referencing Elf i see.
I always thought that was uncooked pasta (don't ask why). Now you made me realize it's just capn crunch, which btw has sugar up the wazoo
Lmfaooooo the way they were looking at ole girl in the back
