    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bender (Judd Nelson) starts causing trouble in detention and questions the value of high school clubs.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. "When you grow up, your heart dies," Allison proclaims in one of the film's many scenes of soul-searching, and, judging from the adults depicted in the film, the teen audience may very well agree. Released in a decade overflowing with derivative teen films, The Breakfast Club has developed an almost cult-like status.

+gcHK47 WOW WHO KNEW THAT! John Bender was my favorite in this and I loved it! This movie was ahead of its time! John Hughes was a man ahead of his time and Bender had a point about the school but now 25 yrs later school is now a battleground and we have cameras and COPS running the school b/c the teachers can't touch the kids and that goes their parents too! WHAT HAPPENED TO JUST GOING TO SCHOOL and being a kid? Also whats even more sick is that now Schools have graveyards b/c of bullies! The teachers still DONT CARE they only care about getting paid and when did female teachers start becoming models? Most the kids cars now are way expensive and better than teachers cars and the teachers drive in older cars because they don't make much and most teachers getting arrested now for trying to act like something they aren't and high school still hasn't changed in the last 25 yrs and now kids are killing themselves b/c Bullying and STILL NO BODY CARES it was sort of like that back then but bullying was so bad like it is today!
Sad how the second generation doesn't given care and they have cell phones, computers, great cars, and its all showing off and making mommy daddy proud because they wanted to get into a great college and then screw it up in the end and they up in jail or worse out on the street! The only thing I can say about John Bender was the part in where he is talking about his dad and how his burnt cigars on his arm! HE WAS PISSED OFF and that would explain him acting out like he did!*** Even the parents are just as bad! I would never want to be teacher in HIGH SCHOOL! NOT TODAY ANYTHING YOU DO OR SAY EVERYONE TALKS OR THEY FLIM IT! The second generation is so messed up now I hate to think what is happening in the next 25 yrs!

He's in detention most of the time so I guess apart from all shenanigans seen in the movie, he's got nothing else better to do but read. Weed, for some people, allows for enhanced creativity and opens new perspectives on things. Bender is also one of those many cases where the educational system just flat out does not work for him. I don't for a second think any person can deny learning new things and discovering new ideas, we are naturally curious creatures after all. It's more of the "means" and the "hows" of it being presented to us that serves as a bottleneck currently.

Tropical Magic Bender was a totally working-class suburbanite. He tells Clara about what he doesn’t have, but at least lives in a house with a garage that can afford paint and his father can afford cigars and give him a carton of cigarettes for Christmas.

A lot of people like him are actually really smart if you stop and listen to them. Homeless addicts drop outs you name it. They aren't stupid. But he sort of shot himself in the foot with the leper analogy. Why did he think the other kids were avoiding him. They saw him as diseased or less than. They wouldn't join his club and he wouldn't join theirs. Stalemate

Easy to say that, but it does give him something to do, and it does get him out of his abusive household. I would also think it gives him a bit of pleasure to channel his apathy into "sticking it" to authority figures like Vernon. That, and he wasn't as much of a rebel as he pretended to be - the point that I believe John Hughes was trying to make.

There's something special about the way John Hughes wrote the teen dialogue in this film and the way the actors performed them. They filmed at a High School that has been closed down a few years earlier. The real library there was too small, so they special built the movie one in it's gymnasium. The same place was used for the interior parts of "Ferris Bueller's..." a couple of years later. The fiction schools for both are Shermer High School, so in John Hughes universe the characters of both movies (and Sixteen Candles too) all go to the same school.

Man this movie is 30 yrs old already and its a classic too and this was high school back in the day and John Bender is the one I like and he actually had alot of points in this flick and I like the way he said I am cracking skulls, and he was angry at his dad and that explains why he pulled the fire alarm and he acted out b/c of his dad and how he told everyone how his father beat him! NO DAD WHAT ABOUT YOU! This movie was way ahead of its time this should be shown in every high school across the state! High School has changed now kids who get bullied end up dead by suicide or on social media, the teachers now look like supermodels and you can get away with more things in high School, everyone has computers, cell phones, i pod, police walking the hallways and cameras watching everyone's move! I miss the old days when you could come and go as you wanted now forget it! Now High School has graveyards and also in every town every state there is that one kid that everyone knows about, that laughs at and bullies to the point where they shoot up the school to make a point that one kid boy or girl who sits in class my himself or herself. Alone People should be nice to the weird kid in school! Knowning John Bender if he went to school now he would shoot up the entire high school just to make a point!
