Jan. 27, 2020 | Sidney Madden -- "It's been a fairly short musical journey and we have seen fairly much success," Koffee told the NPR Music offices between songs during her Tiny Desk set. Flashing her braces with each grin, Jamaica's 19-year old tour de force wasn't exaggerating. Her debut EP, Rapture, just won a 2020 Grammy for Best Reggae Album, making her the first woman and the youngest artist to ever win in the category. It comes just two years after her tribute song to sprinter, eight-time Gold Medalist and fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt went viral online. Koffee has sustained a steady upwards momentum since then, finding her footing on festival stages and collaborating with others outside her genre. (Her latest single, "W" features Atlanta rapper, Gunna.)
Above all, what makes Koffee so refreshing is that she centers her music around faith, resilience and gratitude. She has a new perspective to add to the pantheon of mostly male reggae greats and it's resonating with a new generation that's just getting hip to the iconic sounds. As her Tiny Desk performance shows, Koffee makes the best of her surroundings, channeling the day's buzzy energy into a balancing act of youthful heart and old-pro precision, proving why she has become one of the most invigorating voices in reggae.
"I want to thank everybody who's been involved," Koffee told the crowd halfway during her show. "You have now become a part of my journey."

i just can’t believe she’s 19 years old, so talented
Can't believe she's got a grammy and she's 19 and a new artist. Amazing!! Her family must be so proud. She seems like such a decent person. Just shows age aint nothing.
Wait what!
Imagine that she's amazing
She won a grammy when she was 18, the youngest artist to win the award.
I was just telling my man she can't be older than 19 Amazing Talent
When the background singers came in with the vocals for toast, I wasn't ready!! OOOO Tiny Desk this whole performance was superb. Koffee's grammy is sooo well deserved. Her music is timeless.
That beat drop is outta this world
Was beautiful
The true qualitative of acceptable backstage industry press conference is totem experience of extra exibition sterile energy to provide up standing version of episode wander over.
Jeez... so refreshing to see so many musicians so unselfishly in love with the music...the vibe...the energy!!!
Hi dear I want you for collaboration
All of NPR tiny desk is a hidden gem
Yeah I'm sure no one has ever heard of Mac Miller or Tyler the Creator lol
Reinier Sandtke mainstream artists are only a fraction of their content.
@@birdi3beez yeah I understand that, but the guy said: *ALL* of NPR tiny desk is a hidden gem. That's why I made the joke.
Reinier Sandtke fair enough
not macklemore xD
The first female reggae artist to ever WIN THE GRAMMY FOR BEST REGGAE ALBUM.
BLACKBONO LALA and also the youngest individual to win the Grammy in that category 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
@@juggernautmjae3970 yes u right
how many female reggae artists can you name tho?
@@daniaa1602 That's the point no? Reggae is largely a men's club so to see a young woman in the genre and win awards for it is great.
@@kerrie790 i dont disagree with you lol Koffee fully deserves her success but we cannot ignore the fact that the way reggae is set is up its really hard for females to break through. However as a result of koffees young following, her unique look, her unique sound and the blessing of the male reggae artists she was able to break through
The chocolate in this set is just straight up glowing. This looks and sounds delicious.
I'm proud to see my brothers from Ghana🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭 making it big out.
The Composers
Wow good call I didn’t even recognize that was the composers
The happiest band that’s ever been on Tiny Desk.
You didn't watched Mac Miller tiny desk for sure.
Or the free nationals, that smile
Idles were really happy too
I was going to say Tank and the bangas.
I think it's because she is appreciating everyone in the band
I love how the band is smiling at each other and genuinely feeling the music. They’re truly feeling it. Love it.
OH YES !!!!!!!!!!
Nice teeth/smile with black skin 😍😍😍
Lorenzo Sanchez Love that!
I've written a few songs and I'll tell you there's nothing like doing reggae songs. The bass lines alone gon make you smile
That’s what happens when the music grooves and everyone locked in
Koffee just exudes humility and pure talent, and the band was 🔥. Respect 🫡.
Those 2 drummers in rapture were just playing around that whole time with big smiles. Love it.
Everyone's skin in this video looks like BUTTER, sheeeeeeshhh
Yep every one of them...nice and rich!
RIGHT?!!
I'm saying can we get a skin care drop for the after NPR vid lol
Whoo! Can't stop staring at the dark skinned background vocalist.
Melanin popping
The only reason to dislike this is because it ended
Big facts...
Trueeee
The flow on "Toast" is everything I love about music. Such a timeless track.
She is such a precious artist. I love her. I haven't been this excited and inspired by a recent artist. Please protect her soul.

I love Koffee so much. She seems so shy and humble. Shout out to the singers and band. Every member is beautiful.
That bass man had such a nice smile.... in case you noticed!

She’s not shy. She’s an Ardenne Graduate....well trained for public speaking. Jamaican education system makes sure the children are ready for global experiences.
Michelle Campbell that’s awesome !

Honestly. I keep looking to see when she breathes and I don't know how she does it.
I noticed that as well. I was looking for when she took breaths

I'm standing here, at the other side of the computer screen, and I'm clapping my hands with the audience. You are blessed, Koffee. Thank you for your message, thank you for all you do for the humanity.
Her breath control is insane!! The background vocalists! You ladies are amazing!
Background women; your absolutely STUNNING! Such beauty, energy and filled with the holy spirit!
As a fellow Jamaican I’m so honored to see the youth them doing amazing tings. I’ve been watching Koffee since “Burning” and was like dis girl a go buss soon she bad man, she remind me of when Chronixx started out! So proud of we culture. Thank you NPR tiny desk concert for such a one of kind platform. 🔥🔥🔥🔥. 🇯🇲
I think you meant amazing tings😉
Jamaica gives so much to the world
The way Jamaicans speak English is a joy.
I have hear almost everyone said try that about koffee that her vibe is very like chronic. I say really? I have to listen to him....THEY ARE RIGHT
Proud like a mi cousin!
This woman is so wholesome 🥺
I don't know how many times I listened to "Rapture" they nailed it.
Koffee has a really dope cadence and ad-lib "Uh huh"
sounds exactly like her "mentor" chronixx uh huh
Wicked solid ad-libs
😍😍😍
She’s so cool she makes braces look like grills
Freek Eigenraam Forgot she had braces and for a split second was like: Wow Koffee, you changed! Got some fame and got some grills to be more hype 😳🥺. Then remembered she’s just wearing her braces and felt bad for doubting our humble Queen.
Right, she is so cool that I thought they were grills too...until my kids mentioned that she’s still in braces. Oops 😬 😁
crazy
She is very young only 19 I think
Nz how you doubt someone for having a grill?? It doesn’t say anything about someone’s personality
The energy flowing through the whole band is insane. I can’t stop coming back to this video. Incredible mixing from the NPR sound engineer, the crowd having a genuinely good time, and of course Koffee’s immaculate vibes. Looking forward to seeing her this August in London.
The version of Rapture on this is superior to all others 👌
The sheer flavour this performance displays is for the ages. Every musician happy to contribute their part, zero ego, all teamwork starting from the singer.... Great work!

Self-made artist! Rejected by music school, posted her tribute to Usain Bolt and BOLTED into fame! First female to win a grammy in the reggae genre! Amazing young talent!
Fully convinced that the background singers are robots. THEY DONT MESS UPPPP

The Caribbean spirit is strong.

Her band looks like they're having so much fun
Would make the band my band too they are just adorable and magical their sound is everything 💯
Iono why I'm just hearing about her. She soothing my earlobes wit her island vibes
This is the most beautiful, spectacular, and captivating Tiny Desk ever! Koffee came out of nowhere and I knew I loved what I heard, but watching this brought that to a whole new level. The joy on the faces of her bandmates, her humble acknowledgement of each and every one of them(and lyrics about NPR), lyrical content, and just the overall performance. I don't even know what to say... Took my breathe away 💕💕💕
Those backing vocals are tight. The whole band in fact, one of the best I've seen at Tiny Desk. Congrats
Wish NPR would release these on vinyl. Could even pair artists, one on side A and one och side B. Chronixx & Koffee.. I'd buy it any day of the week.
Yes
I fear that a lot of the appeal of these sessions recording lies in the directionality and super wide stereo soundstage.. Usually if you were to press it on vinyl the lower end should be mastered to be almost mono to reduce the risk of needle skipping. I don't know how prominent this would turn out but the music that sounds really good on vinyl usually is mastered with that in mind as well. They could release HQ versions in digital streaming services but these videos actually don't lack much. If it's the pretty physical object youre after hmu in private, i'll make a **cough** bootleg for ya
Bloody vinyl hipster
Often, the Tiny Desk performance is exceptional - frequently even better than the heavily produced album versions. I too would buy the Tiny Desk versions of MOST artists.
I had the same thought, yo. This would sound great on the stereo
This is what the Obedient movement is all about currently in Nigeria. To offer the youths the future they deserved.

First time listening to her music and I'm so overwhelmed and impressed, she's amazing

Thank you 🥰
InsomaniaKal you’re a Legend🙏🏾
InsomaniaKal thank you
InsomaniaKal thx
The one back up singer looks like family both so pretty
My girl still. The new Lauren Hill. Grammy well deserved.
All this proves that...artist need to start putting live band version on their albums...we don’t need all that extra noise
It used to be that way, but it was cheaper to use electronics... bands phased out, and artists that once were known for also being engineers, producers, etc. became the norm.... I wanna hear live music ALL THE TIME
Seriously though, this is way better than the actual EP. Live instrumentation 🔥🔥🔥🔥
this proves that we need to invest into music again, instead of downloading and listening evrything for free.. how should they effort to pay a band record and all this time that goes into it?
@@MoechtegernPimP TRUTH

How can I like this multiple times ?
DEAR GRAMMYS, PUT UP MORE ARTISTS LIKE THIS PERFORMING DURING THE LIVE TELECAST instead of just "mainstream" artists.

just incredible. i cant even put into words how amazing this girl is. she killed this
One of the best tiny desk performance ever fireeeeerr
Just wanted to make a short notice that she thanked everyone a total of 24 times, if I counted correctly (I didn't even include the amount of thanks she expressed in her songs) and to be clear I want to give her a bless you in the same amount back...and put a million bless yous on top of that. We don't deserve her!
Gratitude is a must yeh🤗
I agree totally except idk bout you but I totally and graciously deserve her artistry and the jewels she drop👑🔥
Well said
Jah bless
Exactly what I loved about her. Even if I didn't love the music (I DO.) I would want to support her career. What a beautiful soul.
Some people don't realize that these lyrics are not just some kind of playing around with English. This is the Jamaican language. It is real.
Echo Trip you mean patwa? 😂
Bless Roons - You can call it that if you like. But why laugh?
Patois
Echo Trip i was thrown off by “jamaican language”. There was no ill intention behind that laugh.
I think it strikes a lot of people as strange to call Patwa (Patois) a language. Because it seems like a slang dialect. But it's been around for hundreds of years, and it has its own rules. I would say that even though it's mostly based on English, it's at least as different from standard English as Spanish is from Portuguese. And those two are called separate languages.
She writes on guitar , amazing lyrics.. but also has great voice and is one of best emcee’s I’ve heard in a while. She’s spot on. I love her music and she is a Lady how she conducts herself. A positive female role model .💚💛❤️🇯🇲
Im so proud of Tiny Desk for capturing this young star! I cant wait to see how she evolves over the next 20 years. OMG I will be 68. Dayyum! Im still gonna be bumping Koffee! the music is great. Rapture is my jam! Im so happy to be on this journey with you Koffee! Thank You!
The band was soooo tight, an immaculate performance by the musicians & backing vocals. A moment of higher spirit and soul from Koffee. Well deserved first female to win a Grammy for Best Reggae Album!
You going places koffee. Thanks for good music and the entire band is great. I'm proud to be a Jamaican. You're such a humble soul. Blessings to you and family.

She is handling fame so well, being truly grateful for everyone who has helped her get to where she is and giving credit where its due. Not to mention she just has some raw talent.
I feel like this phrase is overused- but Koffee is a national treasure. This is what actual “good vibes” is.
The Drummer be digging in😂💯
We can only assume 1k people who disliked this must be babies pressing buttons on Mama's iPhone for the first time...
That could be the only reason
