Erykah Badu: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
소스 코드
- 게시일 2018. 08. 21.
- Aug. 15, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- Some folks around the NPR Music office said they felt an almost spiritual connection to Erykah Badu during her visit to the Tiny Desk. And that was before she and her band even played a single note. It came from the waft of earthly scents that followed in her wake, to the flowing dreads and clothes that hung on her like robes.
After her self-introduction, which included a rundown of her spiritual and creative aliases, Badu rolled into one of her earliest musical calling cards, "Rimshot." It's an ode to the sound the percussionist makes when a drumstick is struck against the metal edge of the snare drum. On this performance, as on her 1997 album Baduizm, it becomes a device to play with time - stretching it, stopping it, suspending it. Propelled by jazz chords on the piano and the steady pulse of the acoustic bass, the playful performance unfolded in the tradition of the best bebop.
But the panoramic song "Green Eyes" is the centerpiece of Badu's Tiny Desk performance. It's wide-ranging in scope and musical arrangement and brilliantly executed by the jazz and hip-hop musicians in her backing band. The story of heartbreak is striking enough, but her interpretation showcases her formidable vocal skills. By the time it was over, we were all just as emotionally and spiritually spent as she was from the experience.
Erykah Badu is an artist for the ages. To old-school jazz fans like myself, names like Nina Simone, Betty Carter and Shirley Horn come to mind as much as Billie Holiday because of Badu's singular approach to a lyric. They all cut their own creative path and left behind a legacy that you can identify with just one note. Erykah Badu is on that same path, and one day her name will be mentioned along with the other Elders who share her spirit of musical adventure.

Listening to Green Eyes helps me process my pain in a way that I can’t explain. The person who promised me forever just walked out of my life unexpectedly and it’s left me confused and ashamed that I ever put my trust in someone like that. I wish I could skip ahead to the part where I’m healed, but this song lets me know that giving myself time and patience to move through each stage of grief is not only permitted, but necessary. Thank you Ms Badu 😌
Edit: It’s been six months since we parted ways and time has given me so much clarity. I’m at a place now where I feel content without him and at peace knowing that we have no future together, but it has taken a lot of grief and self-examination to get here. There are still days where I feel bitter or lonely but those moments slowly become fewer and farther between.
For those of you who are going through a similar situation, my advice is don’t try to avoid the pain or sidestep the natural healing process but to sit with each feeling as it comes so you can truly let go. And please don’t suffer silently, but talk to someone that makes you feel heard, whether that’s through friends, family, or journaling. I promise you that despite the devastation you feel, there is so much ahead of you ❤️🩹
this is beautiful
Same, hoping you make it through. I'm pushing
It's not easy, and it will take time, it may not feel like it now but you've got this and you'll get through it! Peace and love be with you and will be yours again soon.

I hear you. I wish you happiness.

She's like a beautiful, jazz fairy. Her music is magical.

I come back to this performance often. Erykah is literally an embodied corpus of aesthetic knowledge and black music: funk, jazz, soul, blues, hip hop, etc (all of which emanate from the same form of sacred expression). First second she began her performance i knew its gonna be gold.
I have watched this performance for countless of times for the past four years and it's one of my favorite TinyDesk performances. She was a permanent fixture of my childhood and through my teens. Listening to her brings me back to when I was 13, doing homework while she sings in the background. Back when life was still good.
