"Tiny Desk at home? I kinda live on the road!" the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie exclaims one song into her high-spirited set recorded a few miles outside Toronto at the beginning of the 81-year-old's umpteenth tour. Sainte-Marie has always been a wandering soul with a fierce sense of direction. The four songs she performs here with her touring band span her nearly 60-year career, connecting her righteous protest songs - including "Universal Soldier," as relevant today as it was when it became an anthem during the Vietnam War - to the love songs that have soundtracked countless slow dances. This set is a kind of Sainte-Marie primer, touching on her early days as the 1960s folk revival's brashest innovator and her mid-career turns writing country and pop hits like this set's smooth closer, "Up Where We Belong," which won her an Academy Award for best original song in 1983.
Playing a Yamaha "Silent Guitar," designed for road conditions where playing on headphones might be a requirement on a tour bus, and then switching to a small keyboard, Sainte-Marie is an easeful band leader. This occasion was, in fact, her first reunion with her touring band since the pandemic began, and their joy in playing these songs is palpable. Check out Matt Starr's rolling drum fills on "It's My Way" and bassist Mark Olexson's tender twinning with Sainte-Marie's guitar on "Until It's Time for You to Go." But mostly, revel in Sainte-Marie's inimitable spirit, one of the greatest sparks popular music has ignited.

I first had the privilege of seeing Buffy Sainte Marie live at the Seattle Opera House in 1967. She played a packed house in spite of the fact that she had been black listed by the FBI during the Nixon and Johnson administrations and US radio stations were forbidden from playing her music. This primarily due to her song "Universal Soldier" which was popularized by the British folk-rocker Donovan. I have had the privilege of seeing her 5 other times since, mostly playing small venues. Got to meet her twice . The last time I saw her she was playing an Indian Casino on the Oregon Coast about 6 years ago. I can honestly say this was her best concert ever. The first time I met her was at the Boarding House in San Francisco back in the 70s and I have to say I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever met.
The blacklisting is likely another one of her BS stories. I believe that the radios didn't play her simply because her voice is so bad. She sings totally off key with a horrible goat vibrato. It is painful to listen to. I also heard her say that it was because of Universal Soldier....but then why wasn't Donovan blacklisted if he was the one singing the song?

Her music was so instrumental in my grandmother's middle age, my mother's youth and young adulthood, and my childhood as my mother often had her songs on... I'm so thrilled she is on Tiny Desk Concerts... what a great reunion. You can tell they're joyful to be together. She's an absolute legend for all generations.

Buffy is a mighty force of nature, and an equally powerful force for peace. She and her band sound utterly fantastic here, and she remains an absolute dynamo. 'Universal Soldier' is, for me, the greatest anti-war song ever written, and also the most honest - the power to bring lasting peace is in all our hands.
I guess my ears live on a different reality plane. She sounds as horrible as she always has sounded. But for the fake indigenous identity her music would not have left the shower stall.
LEGEND. Saw her 10 years ago at a free outdoor winter festival in Toronto and it was unforgettable. Cherish her while she is around!!

My GAWD, that “up where we belong” just SENDS me. Buffy + guitar is beautiful, but she really becomes one with the piano. She channels something greater when she sings.

It shocks me beyond belief that she is 81 years old. I have followed her for so many years I never thought about her age. However, she has always been a leader to me and i respect her heart and spirit forever. She certainly changed my life in a very positive way - i love her and her work so much. Shame she was never President (I know that's a bit silly but I would certainly have voted for her.) Thank you, Buffy!!!

I love this woman so much, since I was 16 years old back in 1966 she has grabbed my heart and my spirit and took me on a journey into her world with her beautiful voice and powerful songs. She woke me to the plight of the Native American's and I could never let it go. Till this day, I'm 73 and my sister and mentor is 81, she still brings tears to my eyes when she sings.
She taught so many people and brought awareness to our Indigenous brothers and sisters, she gave a voice to the silenced and made us see the beauty and often the pain in her culture.
Thank you for bringing this to us.

I was just a small child the first time I saw Buffy on T.V. My little mind was just blown away by her voice and presence and she continues to leave me in awe.
I am just astonished! I listened to this woman in the sixties - in awe! She was the first person to awaken me to the first Americans and their history and tragedy. Sixty years on, here she is, vital as ever. I thought Universal Soldier was Donovan's song. Now I know why that never made sense. This song is more relevant now that Russia is killing Ukrainians.

I finally met her at Woodford Folk Fest, Australia and she told me she was the first woman to breastfeed on national television on Sesame Street.

Today was a hard day for me and I listened to Buffy for an hour straights and it really revived my spirit.
Glad to see Buffy still out there still making music. She first appeared on my radar in the late 60’s when my brother brought one of her records home.
She looks fantastic! I never knew she co-wrote "Up Where We Belong." She was married to the song's co-writer Jack Nitsche.

Lovely woman, I was lucky enough to meet Buffy after a show in Chicago 6 or 7 years ago. I have been listening to her since Moonshot in 73. Gitchee miigwetch for all the music, wonderful lady.
