The shimmer is basically like a sci-fi version of target. You go in for what feels like a few minutes but it’s hours and when you finally make it out you’re not sure of what happened or what you actually bought.

The sound design/sound score (I refuse to call that "music" in the final act since it sent me sideways and bothers me deeply) is equally horrific and a thing of beauty. I can't stop hearing it after finally seeing this film this weekend. What a master class in sound and cinematic contrast.
I sometimes wonder, out of all the endless apocalyptic scenarios predicted for our extinction, that the actuality of our doom will be beyond anything we’ve ever imagined.

Contagious in a manner beyond our level of human intelligence that not only would we be left without a cure, but rendered unable to even be researched by medical science since the virus would have absolutely 0% structure, the paradoxical phenomena meaning that technically this virus has no matter of existence, yet still remains to be present in our reality. Maybe somehow it seems paradoxical to our reality is that the virus has planted itself as a host in mankind’s Collective Unconscious.

The bear scene is one of the most horrifying things in modern movie history, it sent chills through me the first time I saw it. The feeling of helplessness is very powerful there.

I watched the trailer before watching the movie and I still enjoyed the movie a ton! There are still good twists and scenes of mutation and beauty and the crazy ending not given away in the trailer. I reccomend this movie to anyone that is a fan of science fiction. Alex garland is great.

The world this film creates is both beautiful and full of wonder, yet accompanied by danger and horror. Truly an amazing film. I was on edge for most of it and I'd definitely recommend. Nothing about the ending could be expected.

actually, after a bit of research, you can answer most questions. The books give a lot away.
@@starkill3852 Yes, and Lena, but also the general inability of anyone to simply explain what they saw and experienced when questioned. Yes, everything was completely weird and alien, but one could say, _"it looked like a combination of multiple organisms",_ or _"this thing emulated me, mirrored my movements"_ etc. The total vagueness felt like an obvious plot device to maintain the mystery.
When they were in the zone and saw the flora and fauna and wildlife, we heard detailed attempts to explain their transformation, but as soon as a team of scientists questioned them, all we got was, _"I don't know"._
I guess, arguably, given that Lena was not the original Lena by that stage, her obfuscation could have been a strategy to avoid identification.
Perhaps, Bruce is right; the book explains it all.

This film was on my watchlist for quite sometime, and it left me speechless after watching it. This is incredible and beautiful, left me speechless. I like films that are straight to the point, but these kinds of films that will leave you wondering and thinking, are my favorite ones. This is already one of my favorite films of its decade.
i saw it in theaters and there were only a few other people there. when it ended everyone sat there speechless for a couple minutes comprehending what we just watched. amazing film

this movie is so trippy yet beautiful. I really don't understand how some people don't like it. It's so unique, the environment of the movie and the plot is just so amazing yet disturbing at the same time. this movie is definitely a favorite of mine.

Honestly people, if you haven't seen this yet, GO see it. It's one of the greatest films I've ever seen, and I've been thinking about it's nuanced and clever design for weeks. So well done. The perfect blend between realism and sci-fi ambiguity.

This movie is fantastic. I saw it twice in theaters, as well as multiple times since. The marketing team for this movie did a good job, but it was also an impossible job. Sure, everything in this trailer is in the film, and the story and tone is all accurately presented, and yet...it's also nothing like this, somehow. You just can't capture the true appeal and feel of this film in a trailer.
Saw it twice in the theater as well. It's really how this film was meant to be seen. Spiritual experience both times.

Them getting names was a very significant change for me. The whole point in the book was that they remain nameless, it carried so many implications. I like both for different reasons, and I find the movie really imaginative, though it always irks me when the originalmaterial is so dramatically changed.
The author himself said he didn't think the book could be adapted and then Alex Garland called him and told him they had optioned the novel and would he like to work on it with him and Vandermeer said yes. I'm glad they worked together on this.
@@conflictmagazine makes sense. They do manage a compelling and meaningful narrative. I guess the thing I mourn most is the characterization of the MC. They trivialized her with that "little twist" in her marriage, while the book really dogs deep in her emotional detachment.

Totally, this film had an incredible soundtrack. The score and auditory effects during the climax sequence were absolutely chilling, at a very primal level.

I love how the music at the beginning of the movie is acoustic, folksy, and organic, but as the plot progresses it moves more and more toward the synthetic. By the end you're facing a wall of purely fractal noise. What an perfect sound narrative.

Definitely looks interesting and i'll definitely watch it, but the one issue I have with movies like this and others like Alien Covenant is basically these "scientists" enter these biohazard zones or alien environments totally exposed without any protective gear or hazmat suits, then end up getting infected. The whole plots of films like these seems rely on scientists making poor judgements.
They're basically slasher films with aliens, replacing dumb teenagers with inept scientists.
Kentama Except in sci-fi films, they at least attempt to arrive with the correct equipment. Take The Thing for example. Each scientist isn’t dumb, they try to exploit the issue without risking their lives, and as far as I know, there’s little cliché. I still agree with you though, Kane from Alien could have been a lot more careful with his dumbass mind.

Believe me, having read this trilogy twice, the phenomenon with which they're confronted confounds the boundaries of science entirely, and biohazard suits wouldn't help a bit. SPOILER:
Biohazard suits and every means of protection have been tried many times before this expedition.
rutherford sr. customer support In the latest movie Alien Covenant as well as parts of the previous one Prometheus, these expert scientists literally land on an unexplored alien environment and instantly exit the ship in just plain everyday clothing, totally exposing themselves to an alien atmosphere, then going around touching everything, sniffing everything, drinking the water, eating some plants, without any testing or protective gear. And they expect you to be shocked that people were getting infected.

Uhm. In most of these types of movies it’s a small group of people. I remember in Independence Day it’s basically Will Smith alone that saves the day. All these movies are unrealistic. Somehow people only notice when it’s a small group of women, though.

I haven't read the book but I think that the movie looks great.
I suppose it depends where you live and if you've got a good TV, but cinema tickets aren't very expensive where I live and I'll always pick the theatre over watching it on TV.

It's not an analogue synth It's probably a digital vst like omnisphere 2 or Diva - it could easily be emulated with any modern synth. It's not a sound effect either, it's a brass/bass lead in mono voicing.

There is more than just a monster or mutated animals. It's really not a typical horror/sci-fi story.
It's an unconventional story. It's also not really an action movie.
Every animals are mutated, so it is not incredible.

Can’t really describe to someone what this movie really is and that’s what’s makes it so awesome. The musical score is 10/10 🔥 The creep factor is 👌 and the storyline is a constant intrigue.
Picture (at best maybe) the Upside Down world of Stranger Things clashing with James Cameron’s Avatar.
Stunning movie with incredibly unique “creatures” and beautiful cinematography. You’ll finish it and be in awe, but yet still have no idea what you watched, and that’s the intrigue, I actually enjoyed MORE the second time I watched it 💕

I love the atmosphere this trailer creates and I can't wait to see this movie. I was already sold because it's the same director who directed Ex Machina. Loved that movie and I hope this one is just as good or better.

I know there's a book so the information was already out there but this trailer disappointed me a bit. The first teaser only had the weird sci fi shit. I thought it was going to be more of an unknown entity similar to something like Solaris . I mean that is obviously apart of it but the whole monster thing is what really bums me out. I'm sure it will still be great but I'm definitely less excited now.

Oysters Yeah it does remind me of Arrival but I enjoyed that movie so I don't mind. I feel it will be different enough that it will stand on its own.

I love this movie, but it just goes to show how misleading a trailer can be. And how it can set up certain expectations that the movie was not made to fulfill. They basically show you every moment of tension and excitement and ignore the complexity and depth of the film itself.

*+Monika Moni* No, only one is.. and that's the husband's copy that came out. As it is clearly disoriented out of the zone, doesn't remember anything and doesn't know to act normal. However the Biologist is the original that returned, because she still acts like a normal person that whas clearly seen while she was being interrogated, though she have been suffering from the mutation, which explains the brightness on her eyes.. is what I understand, at least xD

I agree with you I just thought that moment when she was fighting with her clone and lost consciousness and wakes up again she became the shimmer version and clone looked like her. It looked like their identities have changed places and the human Lena burned with her love husband in the lighthouse..I might be wrong. But the mutated versions came in together and were so confused of everything (when they hug and ask who is who)

what i took from it is, this being or alien, wants to experience and thus having meaning/purpose. it inevitably by its nature only changes things. it can't stop changing/mutating/evolving, and all it wants is to become what is around it to experience existence without ruining or changing it. the reason for it mirroring natalie portman is just that. it becomes. whether or not it chooses to become what it touches may be conscious, or just part of its make up is unclear, but she suggests that it didn't even know she was there. sadly, it must be destroyed for it'll change everything on earth into a vat of innate desires, and genetically scrambled life forms. was it carbon based? obviously not. it can become any form of matter. chaining together any molecule that could be imagined. its more like a biological computer that randomizes states. but phosphorous was enough to destroy it, so..

Nope, looks like Google's Deepmind AI image constructs which is probably what inspired the director (google it). This movies seems to dabble in High level General AI and technological singularity concepts which would make sense given the director's history.
It's like an American director saw Stalker (1979) and said "Yeah it's cool but not enough loud noises!"
Stalker 1979 was a good movie. I saw it a long time ago and then when I saw Annihilation, I could see the similarities right away. Didn't think it was a bad movie though. Also the director of Annihilation (Alex Garland) is British.
Had to come watch the trailer on YT since Netflix conveniently left that part out
