I'd say he's just like Maverick on the ground as well. Cocky in all the debriefs just like Maverick. I'd say Rooster is more like Iceman. Calm and collected.

Hangman handled the turn of events well, he got out of his way to personally wish good luck to Rooster and begged to be sent to assist at the first sign of trouble, then delivered on that winning shot. And he accepted his role too, not resentfully, since he kept his swagger and wit through the ordeal. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your -Captain- Savior speaking..." "I AM good- I'm VERY good." Could see that big square-jawed smile from the other side of the carrier. Even got his second active duty kill.

Absolutely! In another interview, Glen said he originally wanted the role of Rooster, but Tom told him to take the roll of Hangman, saying that you choose the role you get in a great movie, and then you make that role great

@@thonthavrath7416 I agree with you there but I definitely see a lot of Maverick still, I saw a vid on KRplus of a teaser that they played in the theatres before some of the doctor strange movies and it was a training scene and Hangman decides to ditch his teammate when they were dog fighting and maverick goes that’s a technique I haven’t seen in awhile

@@michaelbuell3711 Wait, you said Ice was cocky, but not arrogant or full of himself. Do you realize those are all synonyms? Cocky, arrogant, and full of oneself all mean the same thing, essentially having an exaggerated sense of one's own skill or importance (so if Ice was one of them he was all of them). But I don't think that's an accurate description of any of them. It implies they think they're better than they actually are, when in reality they're all amazing pilots and have good reason to think highly of themselves. I'd describe them more as confident and smug, showing excessive pride and satisfaction with themselves, which are traits Ice, Mav, and Hangman all share. Ice also had a habit of teasing Maverick and he told Mav honestly what his problem with his was, that he was dangerous. He shares those traits with Hangman as well. Hangman teased Rooster and the other pilots and he told Rooster honestly (and correctly) that he needed to stop hanging on to the past. Ice has a lot more in common with Hangman than you might think.

For real though he might have behaved like a bully and a jerk in the first half of the movie but my gosh was I smitten with him. Glen Powell is a fantastic actor and only deserves the best going forward. Can't wait to see Devotion next month.

No. Hangman was the best and most reliable out there. Basically he’s the carbon copy of maverick in the air and iceman on the ground. He was the next maverick. If you watch the first movie. Maverick was not picked as #1. The same what he did to hangman. Rooster was his bestfriend son and he want to get the best out of him.
If you really think about it hangman is the next maverick and rooster is the next iceman

@@Lonewolf54322 Hangman is a reliable lone wolf, not a team player. He was picked as reserve because if shit hit the fan, he's more reliable in that he will get the job done by himself because he's got the skills and the ego to back it up, like Maverick. He is The Best on an individual level, but would likely hamper the team if you try to make him work with others mostly because he's got a reputation for being fast and reckless and self-centered which would mean trust issues from his teammates. He would probably perform poorly during the SAM scene after they bomb the target either because Hangman would be reckless in avoiding missiles and put others in danger, or because his teammates have some doubt that he would cover them when it comes down to the wire, etc. Hangman may be most like Maverick, but Old Maverick has had his ego tempered by the death of his best friend which he felt responsible for. Maverick has found the balance between being skilled and independent, while being reliable in a team as a leader, whereas Hangman has not and this mission is NOT the place to learn that particular lesson.
Rooster is more reliable in a team situation by default cause he doesn't have the same lone wolf attitude problem or ego that Hangman does. The problem is that Rooster is overly cautious and thinks too much which is such a shame because he could be on Hangman's level + actually be a good leader and teammate if he just stopped thinking and trusted his instincts more. This means not only does Rooster have great potential for personal growth as a skilled pilot, but he also has potential to make the team better by being a good leader because he's well liked and charming and his team feels like he cares for them (at least more than Hangman seemingly does). I wouldn't really compare him to Iceman though, I feel like Rooster will develop into his own person.

@@NM-ok9wb Just like Rooster had so much potential in him that wasn’t developed well bc of self issues, it was the same for Hangman. He had great caliber and strength built as a lone individual but had problems with teamwork. What the movie did well was that it didn’t only focus on Rooster but also showed us how Hangman in the end became the team player and great support which he wasn’t before.
Maverick picked Rooster bc what he needed right now was teamwork more than individual potential, and because he needed to make up for him too. But in the end, both Rooster and Hangman was able to overcome their obstacles. So I won’t say who’s better than who, it’s just a matter of perspective.

@@NM-ok9wb I don't think Hangman is self-centered. He just has very high expectations of those around him because of his skill and because they're supposed to be the best of the best. He was undoubtedly the greatest pilot there, but his problem was that he expected everyone to be on his level when they weren't. He said in the movie that he left his team because they couldn't keep up and when he was riling up Rooster, he knew the mission parameters well and what they required, he knew Rooster wasn't ready, just like Maverick, and stated that. He sets his expectations of his teammates as high as those of himself and when they don't meet those expectations he hangs them out to dry. I feel like he'd probably work better on a team where everyone's level of skill matched his own. Because if you're working with people who aren't on your level and you're not teaching them (he obviously wasn't) or waiting on them to learn (impatience is another problem he has), then your only option is to keep it moving. That's how it is with some people, including me. I'm not a teacher and I'm not patient enough to wait on other people to learn what I already know, so I end up moving ahead on my own sometimes.

Originally I was furious with Hangman for finding out the truth behind Rooster's bad blood with Maverick. The more I think about it, the more I realize he was frustrated with Rooster for being unwilling to bury the hatchet with Mav. Originally I expected him to be the wingman and was shocked when Maverick selected Rooster in an attempt to mend fences with him. He is very good. I clapped when he saved the day. I'm beyond smitten with the character and the actor. Glen Powell is a talented babe who deserves multiple awards for his role as Hangman.

The first one shouldn't really count because there were two MiGs and Maverick went after the first one and Cougar went after the second which Cougar lost in the sun leading toward the MiG 2 getting behind him. After Maverick got MiG 1 to bug out, he got the second MiG to bug out as well via intervented. Not to mention, Maverick risked his (and Goose's) lives to get Cougar to land on the carrier after Cougar was shaken after the MiG had him on a missile lock.
