South Korea vs Japan: Who owns Dokdo/Takeshima?

  • The Dokdo (sometimes Tokdo) or Takeshima rocks (also known as the Liancourt rocks) have been one of the major obstacles in the development of Korean-Japanese relations for decades. In 2021, the conflict made headlines when Japan released a map for its 2020 olympic games, supposedly showing the rocks as Japanese territory, which sparked outrage across South Korea. Although this small territorial dispute has been a frequent topic of public discussion in both Japan and South Korea, it is relatively unknown outside the region.
The current dispute originated in 1905, however its roots stretch back much further than that. Since 1954, the rocks have been de facto controlled by South Korea, however Japan continues to claim that this is an illegal occupation. In this video we take a closer look at the conflict: Where does it come from? How did it develop? And what drives South Korea and Japan in this dispute?

In the past, Japan wrote that Dokdo had nothing to do with Japan according to the Taejeonggwan directive it made. This is evidence that Japan recognized Dokdo as Korean land, and it is true that Dokdo is close to Korea, and Japan had no relationship with Japan before 1905. It has never been said that Dokdo is Japanese land, but Japan suddenly made an unreasonable claim that Dokdo was an island without an original owner and that it was Japan's inherent territory. The reason Dokdo is Japanese territory is because of the natural resources on Dokdo.

In response, the Japanese side made this objection.
The "Takeshima" in "Takeshima and One Other Island," which was declared irrelevant to Japan in an 1877 Dajokan directive, is not the current Takeshima/Dokdo, but the fictional "Argonaut Island" that was created by a discrepancy in longitude and latitude when French and British navigators surveyed Ulleungdo, and since "One Other Island" refers to Ulleungdo, Japan has not given up the "other one island".

@@c_kenma7307 If Japan's claim had been recognized, Takeshima would have been managed by Japan by now. However, Takeshima is currently managed by Korea. This means that Korea's claim, not Japan's claim, was recognized. If Korea has illegally occupied it, Japan or another country's claim has been acknowledged. Government agencies must have also taken action. And when we asked Japanese people if they knew where Takeshima is, most of them responded that they did not know. I think it is wrong to just claim that an island whose location is unknown is their territory.

You know why no one called dokdo as "bamboo island"? because there's no bamboo on Dokdo. It's funny that you even say that it could be a fictional island because that name actually existed lol.

    1) Since the Three Kingdoms Sagi (512), there have been consistent references to Dokdo in Korean (Joseon) ancient literature and old maps, but Japan's Goheon and old maps did not mention Dokdo and said it was not Japanese territory.
    2) The Japanese shogunate received a reply from Tottoriburn that Dokdo was not Japanese territory, and in 1696, Ahn Yong-bok of Joseon visited Oki Island in Japan and received a reply that Dokdo was Joseon territory.
    3) On October 25, 1900, Emperor Gojong of the Korean Empire enacted the Korean Empire Edict No. 41, which designated Dokdo as an annexed island to Ulleungdo Island, and practically exercised the territory sovereignty of the Republic of Korea after the defeat of the Japanese Empire and liberation.

No. All that's left is the remnants of Japan's Japanese Nazi. People who know Dokdo well don't say it's Japanese territory. Because all the stories tell us that Dokdo belongs to Korea, and in 1905, Japan deceived Korea and spread the lie that Dokdo belongs to Japan.
The San Francisco Treaty and the Scpqin stipulate that Dokdo is not a Japanese territory and guarantees all rights of Korea. The 19th-century maps of Russia and Japan clearly depict Dokdo as Korean territory. The geographical location of Dokdo is the same as that of Usando in Korea.
In 1905, Japan incorporated Dokdo into Japanese territory and did not speak to Joseon. After spreading lies all over the world, they told the manager of Ulleungdo in jeoson in 1906. The administrator reported to the king of Joseon that he had heard that the island under his jurisdiction had become Japanese territory, and Koreans protested. But Japan ignored South Korea's protest. This is because Korea's diplomatic power fell into Japan's hands when it found out about Dokdo.

@@syoh9673 First of all, there are several points at issue, but regarding the San Francisco Peace Treaty, first of all, it was Japanese territory, including pre-war Korea. Even if the land invaded during World War II was illegal, in the case of Korea, it was legally annexed, and this was recognized by the great powers of the time. Therefore, Korea can only claim land that Japan has renounced its territorial rights to. This was determined by the San Francisco Peace Treaty, so the San Francisco Peace Treaty cannot be ignored. Also, this gives the feeling that the decision was made unilaterally on the South Korean side, so if South Korea were invaded and Takeshima was previously South Korean territory, it is understandable that South Korea would claim sovereignty over Takeshima. However, this is actually not the case. South Korea says that Usando is Takeshima, but Usando is drawn to the west of Ulleungdo, so the location is reversed. It is also stated that the island is covered in trees, but since Takeshima is an island made up of rocky mountains, the claim that Usando is Takeshima cannot be accepted.

Thank you for a very objective and well made video about the issue, I have a little objection though, and this is the San Francisco Peace treaty, according to the documents available, it seems that the dispute about Liancourt Rocks was indeed on the agenda, and there was several discussions back and forth, but there was a draft of 5 different agreements, including the island and not. The final agreement did NOT include the islands, remember this was the agreement of Japan giving back what they took during the War. If the islands was not included in the official agreement that was signed (Not by any fault of the Japanese, but the western World) this means the island are still Japanese, because the whole of Korea was Japanese. Many aspects of this whole process was unfair to the koreans, because they were not there when this happened, not to any fault of the Japanese, but still not fair.
I do NOT believe that (officially, on paper) that the Liancourt Rocks are Korean, but as a Japanese descendant I strongly believe that Japan as a gesture of friendship, should officially give the islands back to Korea. I do however also believe that the whole reason for Japan's anger around this, was that Korea deliberately invaded the island after the War, just to build on it (Officially illegally) if this would not have happened, I believe that the islands would have been given back to Korea a long time ago.

      @YA-fi3ng 19 일 전 +2

You seem to have a slight misunderstanding, so I'd like to point it out.
The 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty was a World War II peace treaty concluded between Japan and 48 Allied nations. A peace treaty is a treaty concluded between belligerent countries declaring the end of war and the restoration of peace. The conditions for peace include the cession of territory, compensation, and the release of prisoners of war.
It is natural that the South Korean government could not attend San Francisco, since South Korea was not a belligerent in World War II. South Korea is a country that was founded on August 15, 1948, and is classified as a "third country."
Japan continues to insist that it did not abandon Takeshima under the San Francisco Peace Treaty. If there is an objection to the Japanese government's claim, only the 48 countries that are signatories to the treaty can file an objection, and the Republic of Korea does not have that right.
The territory of the Republic of Korea was granted by Japan and the 48 Allied Powers. The Republic of Korea's armed occupation of Japan's Takeshima is an act that goes against the international order.

As Dokdo is under the effective control of the Republic of Korea, as of now, Dokdo’s sovereignty lies with the Republic of Korea! thank you again
