As much as I love older anime like Naruto, stories like that get so predictable. Strong villain, protagonist gets stronger, beats villain. Anime like AOT is taking the story telling aspect to a whole new level. Things like foreshadowing, not knowing who to root for, etc.
Edit: Don't get me wrong at all. Love Naruto. Fucking GOAT status.

Haikyuu nails the new Shonen formula... its relatively short compared to old anime, but still gets the audience heavily emotionally invested in a lot its characters.

I think they nailed it. That's my problem with newer/shorter vs. older/longer. Old stuff yes it was slower but BECAUSE it was slower and there was a lot of filler it was more like life. You were given extra situations and experiences with the characters that you'd never get if they rushed the story along. I ride heavy with the straw hats because I was there since day one and I've seen that slow progression in their story so when something happens it hits different. Same with any other longer anime. More episodes means more material means more time to build an attachment.

I would actually argue that Attack on Titan is much more similar to really old anime and manga from the 70’s - 90’s. Stuff like Berserk, Monster, Gantz, Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D, Blade of the Immortal, Akira, Battle Royale, etc. I tend to like the really old stuff because it felt more gritty, mature and realistic which is precisely why I love Attack on Titan. It feels like a return to the old days for me haha.
Now this is the truth. Not to mention that the show definitely takes inspiration from Neon Genesis Evangelion which is imo the GOAT. Personally I wasn't an enormous fan of AoT. Also I just think it's kind of gross to the extent that it bothers and detracts me from the story. The standard Titans are just too weird.

Yeah, AOT definitely is more like mature themes of seinen genre. It’s for sure up there with the top tier classics like Berserk, Vagabond, soon to be Vinland Saga, etc.

But 17 never trained, he just went hand-to-hand with animals on the island, while goku was there fighting gods and improving his stamina. Db super has many flaws as it completely removes the system of power level from the anime. Like the fights don't make sense anymore.
@@DMSGP19 nah they make plenty of sense. Dende said 17 never stopped training. He has infinite energy too so he could train at full power non stop, which means he could progress even further. All this for 14 straight years. Also, he was many times stronger than frieza when he was first introduced. So imagine frieza training at full power non stop for 14 years. I can kinda see why people say it’s crazy, but it does actually make sense.

Attack on titan might be the best anime ever made imo. The story has so many twist and plots with no holes in it. The animation is beautiful, the character development is untouchable, you are very invested in characters and it's just damn near perfect from the soundtracks and the feel of sorrow for the characters (very little light heartedness in the show) that's why I don't think anything comes close. Id say fma brotherhood would be the next best thing
AOT gives me a feeling I don't often get from watching anime. I've never seen anything like it before done so well. The author has had the story planned out since the first chapter, and it shows. The story is so cohesive and consistently incredible.
It’s the only anime that I’ve had the tenacity to watch whole. And I read the manga in a day after S4 ep16 to avoid being spoiled.

They made a great point, alot of older anime is focused on building a world and exploring as many ideas as possible, while newer anime always seems to have a definite end in mind.

It really depends what you're looking for. I liked the old animes because a lot of thought went into them. You'd have different factions and an actual world.
Like, the world exists outside of the protagonist. Went the protagonist went to sleep in older animes i get the impression that other people are still doing their thing.
In newer animes if the protagonist were to go to sleep it feels like the world stops and resumes when they wake up.

I prefer new and old anime. That old 90s anime had that great hand drawn animation and fights and the stories were pretty good. But new anime, the advanced art, amazing plots, emotion be on 10. From Akira to Jujitsu Kaisen. There are so many new and old gems

Sameeeee... Honestly don't care if its an old anime or a newer one. Or if its long or short. If the story and writing and characters are good then I would like it... I don't like long series that don't even make sense in the long run like Naruto because of how dragged on it is and there's a lot of plotholes. If it's like how the writing is and world building is in One Piece then it's good. Newer stuff like AOT, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc are also rare gems...
I agree Jujustsu Kaisen got me back into shounen for real, it feels like bleach (hopefully doesn't end like it) almost with naruto/dragonball influences. Also I have to say Rezero is easily one of if not the best isekai, Wonder Egg priority, Jobless reincarnation, Promised Neverland, Shinkai's films etc. There's a lot of great new anime, but old anime is just as good in a lot of ways, but way more influential so its really up to preference.
When I was in middle school people would try to bully me for watching anime I never folded cuz I ain’t bitch made but now that I’m 21 all I hear is people claiming this anime life style or whatever it’s funny to see the shift in culture.
You can thank trends for that. Back then it was an "us vs them" type of situation but now people/kids etc see their favorite influencer, as much as I hate that term, going through nerd shit and now they jump on the bandwagon. It's crazy how easily people change minds

New anime are gonna get better. They get inspiration from the old and improve upon it. Someone will someday create something even better using the old as reference. I'm hoping for a series that isn't afraid to kill a fan favorite character out of no where.

100% the more demand there is for anime the more studios gonna cut corners to fulfil that demand.
AOT is already remembered higher than code geass. AOT is like the biggest anime ever already, code geass is big within the anime world but my coworkers who don't even know anime know AOT. AOT is a whole other beast man, it's bigger and better than code geass in every way. There isn't a comparison to AOT bc we've never seen anything like it, every season getting better than the last, hitting every note, capturing the global zeitgeist... It's a whole other beast.

@@unraveled_9197 I hold code geass in the highest of ranks but season 2 was a bit wonky here and there despite hitting the landing. AOT hasn’t missed yet. I consider code geass a 9 overall and AOT a 10 overall. Hard to compare one show that is finished to another that isn’t, but AOT hasn’t been bad at all yet, it gets better and better where season 1 of code geass was more consistent than season 2. We’re comparing two of the greatest ever tho, so at that point it’s just nitpicking, but code geass is ever so slightly easier to nitpick than AOT, making AOT better. AOT is the biggest anime ever because it’s arguably the best. Code geass, tho great, wasn’t great enough or palatable enough for even a non anime fan to enjoy it the way AOT is.
Code geass is amazing for an anime, AOT is amazing for a show period.
@@WinedandDined27 Season 2 of code geass wasn’t as good as 1 but it’s a great season nonetheless plus it has one of the greatest if not the best ending in anime. Attack on Titan season 1 wasn’t that great compared to 3&4 and season 2 was just ass imo. Aot is a great anime but not the best it has many flaws too.
