I didn’t care that the pace was slow. The visuals, production values and creative narration kept me 100% engaged. I’ve never seen anything like this before and it was FANTASTIC

Sir Gawain: Boring…..
You will reap what you sow!- What a clever story hook. It's as if his future showed up and said "lets have fun, tell me, what will you do with your life? Will you be remembered? What will your mark be?" I should think that is why he yells and tells them to remember "what has happened here" the green knight laughs at the boy's hubris, and the journey shows why he laughed. The lesson at the end is clear. No one escapes death, and those who live have enough time for one game. There is no winning, there is only how we play, what honor we have, and what risks we take.
"Try with honor." That's key. The Green Knight gave his neck to the boy. And the boy gave up his honor by taking his head. The boy repeatedly fails tests in this film. The only time he passes one is at the end. Great film.
If only they'd kept the original ending and had the Green Knight cut off his head
@@WarlordM In the original poem the Green Knight doesn't cut his head off. He only gives him a slight wound
@@marcusthomsen7012 yes but the poem is a very different story. The originally planned ending for this movie was that Gawain would be beheaded and thereby finally gain his honor. The director cut that ending and decided to make it ambiguous, which I personally believe greatly weakens the film
I thought he passed the one where he met St. Winifred.
Not quite. He didn't lose his honor by taking the head, but he would have had he not permitted the Knight to potentially take his in return.
The Knight offered his own sacrifice, Gawain had to be willing as well.
they got the "dark fantasy" style down so well in this movie.. and i loved their interpretation of the Aurthurian-era aesthetic. there's almost a dark-souls-y feeling to it

I love that they played husband and wife in The VVitch and now get to have this great scene opposite one another. Also, it seems some ppl who saw the film dont get that its art house fantasy, not Lord of the Rings or a super dark Marvel film. Dont mind those audience review scores, just see it for yourself and make your own judgement.

I get that it's not lord of the rings or marvel, And that it is intentionally slow and artsy at times, but some of that camera work felt like watching the DMV sloth in Zootopia for 3 hours
Kate Dickie is such an underrated actress. She plays deranged so well.

Whoever did the sound design and the makeup for the Green Knight both deserve such a huge raise. They did such a remarkable job

I love all the little details on Guinevere’s costume
In fact, it's a lazy custom design, they used elements that aren't from that era (those little medals are Mexican "miracles" vows from 18th century) , rather modern. Out of context they look good but the designer clearly tricked the audience.
@@ooo00OOQ If you watch the actual film you will see that there are very deliberate anachronisms in the film, (such as the architecture of St Winifred’s cottage and a later plunging neckline on another character). This is not down to ‘laziness’, this is a conscious choice
@@mrsgollum exactly… and if you could catch a mistake such as that, what makes you think a whole team wouldn’t catch it ? That’s because it was a conscious decision and was in fact meant to be there…

88% (!) critics' score on RT. 50% audiences. I don't think this is a case of "critics are useless". In general, actually, they get it right. I predict this movie's reputation will increase with time.
It's also because general audiences don't see much beyond surface level things.

It’s a pretty good movie but nothing insane, these comments are making it seem way better than it was
In general, critics are hacks. They got it right by accident because they like movies that SEEM deep. Which includes movies that are, and movies that aren't.
They just latched on to a dude kissing a dude and a lot of subtlety in this one.
Audiences are who put butts in seats, and so their mediocre preferences get first pick in studios' priorities. We won't see things like this too often as a result. But in 50 years no one will care about comic book movies except as backdrops of their time, much like we celebrate the most garish aspects of 1950s or 1980s culture now. No one will care about Titanic, or Avatar. But things that gain critics' approval while garnering a cult following will be remembered. Most of the blockbusters of the day are long obscure, but people still talk about and study and measure against Citizen Kane, which thanks to Hearst didn't even get off the ground at the box office when it was released.
Not saying this is Citizen Kane, but it has something to say that Avengers doesn't, and that flies over the consumers' heads. Just like The Last Duel. And The Thing will outlive ET.
So basically you can cut the knights head off, he won’t die for obvious reasons. Then a year later you must let him do the same and you’ll obviously die? Seems like a sweet deal
you can strike him anywhere at any measure. Gawain being a stupid kid who wanted to put up a show chose beheading. He could've just cut the green knight on the cheek or arm and that would've been what was returned. It was stated in the challenge itself. That's one of the morals of the story, " don't buy what you can't pay for"
Yeah, I think you should read the original story (or at the very least a summary) if you wish to understand the meaning of the challenge
WOW. What a masterclass this was... How to :
1. Dramatically make the scene terrifying for Guinevere (the plot by Morgana was devised to frighten her)
2. Hide the Green Knight's real voice (later, his real identity is revealed, but in cinema, hiding his voice can be a bit more tricky, because we can hear him)
3. Twist a classic scene with a new, unique, cinematic vision...
4. ... while also keeping the core of the ancestral poem.
I'm furious that the movie isn't yet released in my country... dying to see it.
Same for me, Im in Colombia and there are no signs of it being released. Lets thank the herd of sheep that fill the theaters to see F9, Space Jam and who knows what

@@JakesNotDrinking At least in the poem, he turns out to be a mage king who agreed to help Morgana test King Arthur’s knight’s honor. But I’d have to watch the movie to see how they change that.

Kate Dickie played Anya Taylor Joy’s mom in THE WITCH…besides being a great actor, she’s the queen in this, so she deserves that grand costume

yep. was also a test of ego, the challenge rules themselves state that he could’ve just scratched the green knight and have that scratch returned, not a beheading.

An Arthurian coming-of-age story. This film is a masterpiece.
I ve just seen it in the movie theatre...I really loved every bit of it, it was maybe a bit slow, but it payed off waiting so long to finnaly go see it.

I am definitely going to watch it and IMAX on July 30th and probably buy it on Blu-ray when it comes down

Sean Harris and Kate Dickie (Lysa Arryn) wow. It's uncanny how their previous works kind of bleed into this portrait. Their characters emit a palpably malevolent aura while ostensibly being forces of good.
This voice sounds very familiar! Could he also done the voice of a ps1 classic of medievil? Lol
The breaking of a seal made me shake.
I watched this movie last night and it’s a pretty good movie. It was slow for some parts and I wished they included some kind of fight scene/challenge that Gawain had to face in the forest. I love the fantasy aspect of the movie and the visuals and sound design is amazing. This scene is my favorite in the movie. Very captivating

As much I love this movie I never got why he needed the queen to read the letter for him to speak but he can talk completely fine in the green chapel.
I think maybe he is unable to speak until the challenge officially begins? He starts talking right after Gawain cuts off his head, officially beginning the challenge
In the original story, the Green Knight was meant to frighten the queen, so this was a nice enhancement of that.

Great movie I loved it and I know it's based on an ancient poem but I find amusement in Gawains stupidity in this event. Guy rocks up in a very strange suit of armour possibly a man made from wood. His presence gives Merlin, MERLIN the heeby jeebies. The act of reading his letter makes the Queen speak unnaturally and then collapse from the till simply speaking his terms took on her then the letter bursts into flame. Gawain takes the challenge and thinks. "Eeh it'll be fine" until he gets back up. I joke I joke. I love the movie and it's themes and visuals
A part of me wishes theyd made the film look like actual old anglo saxon england instead of this made up fantasy like setting, but it feels quite magic
This is a more faithful recreation of anglo-saxon england than a lot of medieval fantasies.
Barring the obviously ludicrous wealth and scale of Camelot and the false house near the Green Chapel- the interiors and costumes especially are VERY well-researched and very evocative, even if not 100% accurate.
But that is king arthur, it's a fantasy and always was

Green knight put down his weapon and was on his knees. A true knight should not strike him. Even in the heat of a duel. After all it was a game of Honor.

So why didn’t Sir Gawain just land a small cut on the Green Knight? The game says whatever he lands will be returned a year later

@@tannerswantz7140 He’s a young knight, nephew of King Arthur, eager to make his own name. Also he didn’t know the green knight would pick up his head and leave hahah. The original poem didn’t describe the green knight as a monstrous being.

And then a masterpiece was born.

The film just didn’t do it for me but this scene was brilliant
My complaints about the film personally:
The beginning is a bit sluggish. And the lack of any information whatsoever about his mom can be fustrating. You have to know lots about this tale and the greater lore it takes place in to understand what's going on.
I absolutely hate the thieves. I get his journey is meant to be fraught with problems. But I really wanted to see them get karma. I don't like characters that make you feel frustrated and extremely pissed off and then not get relief from those emotions. Hate that feeling.
The giants' scene was TOO ambiguous and "wtf is going on".
And finally. I wish the landscaping and set design was a little more fantastical. Imo the woods and what not were a bit TOO realistic.
Great film, and this speech with the voice is easily my favorite scene. Simple yet beautifully executed.
What annoyed me the most about this movie is that the scene leading up to this one (where the hero's mother/king's sister is doing a ritual to summon the Green Knight) is never explained.
Why would the mother not try to break the 'binding', after the fact, knowing that her son will die if he goes to meet the Green Knight? I can't help but wonder if they left this portion out in the movie, but it was explained in the book(s?).
The movie is well made but the story it presents is rather lacking imo. And I was also disappointed by the lack of a fight scene. You can't just show a towering monster of a knight who challenges the good guys to a duel and then not have a fight lol.
The entire reason Morgana made the spell & set the events in motion was so that her son would be able to take his place in Arthur's court, like he wanted. All of the knights there are already proven, honorable men; what need would they have to take the Green Knight's challenge? That's the entire point, no one BUT Gawain would accept the challenge because he's the only one who still feels the need to prove himself. She's setting him up for success in her own way.
All Gawain had to do was give him a small cut or harm him a little to meet the Knight's terms, but he in his arrogance of youth & wanting to show how "brave & noble" he is like everyone else in the room, he beheads him. He doles out death without thinking of consequence & then the entire year leading up to and during the journey, he's thinking about those consequences & about how he's going to meet his death. It had nothing to do with needing "a fight scene," or "a duel," it's meant to be a game. A lesson in humility. You give me a cut, I give you the same one back. This is all explicitly told in this scene; it really just seems like you didn't get it.
Anybody out there really really like this but were put off a little by hereditary, the witch, and/or midsommar? I have been considering seeing this.
Just saw it tonight and it was fantastic. It wasn't blood guts and gore like the Witch and midsommar, and I didn't feel uneasy at all watching it. It never felt like it was trying to be scary, it's just a beautiful film.
This was the best part of the film, because not only is it awesome but it’s the one scene that’s at all accurate to the poem. The rest of the film is disgusting.

Such a friendly greeting, to a people terrified of everything they do not know, comes a stranger. Whom regales them in his voice, through the mouth of a Queen. The script upon which this movie is laden, burst to flame without torch or candle to aid it. I'm in love, and I'll never see it.
Funny thing: I remember noone else from this life that was in that life. Only MY FATHER. I remember no Mother, no Son, no Grandma, no Grandpa, no brothers or sisters, noone except MY FATHER AND I! SO WHY IN THIS VERSION ARE ALL THESE OTHER PEOPLE INVOLVED? I WOULD RATHER STAY IN THAT DAMP DARK CAVE WITH MY FATHER! Doctrine=Doctor=Witch doctor=Pagan=Religion
Imagine thousands of years ago. Prehistoric times. Imagine a doctor treating someone. Saving them. To the cavemen that had to seem like witchcraft to them. Or seeing helicopter fly. It would seem like witchcraft to them. Imagine when they discovered fire.
A divine woman is a witch. A divine man is a prophet. Don't practice divination, St John the Divine, Jesus Christ, King David. Money is the root of all evil, money answereth all things. Do not worship the host of Heaven, A star will come out of Jacob. Do not worship stars, the Magen David/Hebrew star, Jesus's star that rose in the east/Eastern star. Genesis states the stars and heavenly bodies shall be for SIGNS and for seasons, Jesus said "do not seek a sign". Yahweh divorced Ashersh in the Garden of Eden, Jesus said from the beginning divorce was not so.
For a God that doesn't change, I must be missing something here because there is a whole lot of contradicting going on in one book.
If I actually was able to understand what he said in the movie theater I might have been more interested through out the film.
