The “trash can plus-up” bit absolutely never gets old lol
That had my dying!! 🤣🤣🤣
The fact that you can look at something like that yeast sandwich and still take a nice big bite is a testament to the greatness of this channel. You’re a hero, taking one for the team so we don’t have to! “Definitely should have stopped at 1000 sandwiches” 😂
"Yeast sandwich", my GAWD
You might have hit the nail on the head with "Maybe people smoked a lot back then".My Dad smoked for 50 years and when he finally quit (Cold Turkey)He was amazed by how good food tasted! But even at his smoky best he wouldn't touch a cottage cheese and anchovy sandwich!
literally all of the things he said were common in that era were self-evidently true
the palpable trepidation you display before taking the first bite of the yeast/ketchup sandwich is priceless
This is my favorite of the year-end recaps. lol
🙌🏻👏🏾🤝
Barry, this is the funniest thing I have ever seen!congrats brother!
I love when the sandwich is crap and you just throw it in the bin
"I'll try anything once." Very funny stuff, laughing with you.
Do you have a go-to palate cleanser after bad sandwiches?
Loving these recaps, I hope to see a lot more of them in the coming years!
You know it’s bad when the best you can say is “it has nutritional value, it would sustain life if eaten” lol
7:19 Should be a meme😂
Barry out here trying ALL the sandwiches, good and bad, so we don't have to. I salute you, Barry!
omg, my face hurts from laughing 😂
Thank you!
"Here's the thing.." cuts to the trash bit😂
I’m detecting a theme here…..anchovy paste
I am really enjoying these Top 10s! These were really funny 🤣
Using the butt end of the loaf was very appropriate. 🤣
"Salt-lick be they name." That is suffering for art. I'm amazed you didn't curse at the yeast/ketchup sandwich. Respect.
Love your reviews. They are both educational and entertaining. Thank you for making me laugh.😂
Thank you so much!
I appreciate the supercut of trash can yeetings, it makes up for the one we didn't get with the pimiento.
You look at something like the Original Yeast Sandwich, and all that comes to mind is... times were HARD in 1936, Jack.
Visually though, I give the crown (the... um... anti-crown? what's the opposite of the crown?!) to the cottage cheese anchovy disaster. I'm sure it tasted bad, but good gawd almighty that looks unpalatable. Happy new year and thanks for the laughs!
I love how short and to the point these are. Not trying to hit that 10 min mark at all and they're just fun! A million things in good old white bread ❤
Even the year in review is short and to the point I love it!
Thanks!
We have seen the best of 2023 and the worst. Now on to 2024!!!!
Love this channel
I get it they all can't be home runs but I'm no longer hungry so there is that.
My favorite part was when the Hoyt sandwich knocked your glasses crooked
4:40, we see Barry questioning all the choices that led him to that moment.
12:00 But you didn't spit it out!😂
Thank you for these bonus gifts!!!
something people underestimate about the 1890s to the 1900s is how much substances the average person was using on a semi-regular basis. some people were just stoned *all the time* back then, so i'm not surprised at these early 20th century recipes.
Lol. Im getting an "I can deal with anchovies but I really dont like them too much" vibe.
Amazing thank you
Have you considered becoming a test pilot?
Might be safer.
😂
Yay! I’m happy to say I’ve never had any of the sandwiches on this top 10 list, and for that I am truly grateful. Happy New Year to everyone, and happy hunting for (hopefully) tasty sandwiches.
As a South African I grew up on this stuff called Peck's Anchovette, which is an anchovy paste of sorts, though i think it technically has some other fish types in there as well. Its super mild though, and made for spreading on bread. Honestly pretty delicious. I do wonder if the hate for anchovy paste could be tied to whatever specific brand of anchovy paste you are using, and further wonder if back in the day they may have used something more like Peck's than the modern super salty stuff... food for thought. I think you should do an anchovy paste showdown with a bunch of different brands 😂
I actually highly respect keeping a spread sheet honestly most youtubers will faulter in opinion due to shoddy memory
You do great work love your channel keep it up!
The list we've all been waiting for!! Thanks for your sacrifice, and have a great New Year!
Great end of the year video!
Such a great and interesting channel! I'd never try those awful concoctions but so interesting to see they were published as recipes!
i love the videos where he just makes some mystery goo and spreads it onto bread.
Yeast sandwich. It sounds like it's supposed to be homemade Marmite.
And yet it was worse by a lot.
Here's hoping that 2024 includes enough sausage-need sandwiches to also have a "Top Ten Wurst Sandwiches" list.
Well done, my friend. Here's to a safe and happy new year!
That Spanish sandwich sounds delicious.
Love this
I screamed at the Hoyt Sandwich. Good lord.
7:18 makes me laugh every time.
wow... two of these so far seem reeeally similar to some of my favourite fillings - Italian chop, and pimento cheese...
I think a good metric would be how many times you chew before immediately yeeting it into the bin. I noticed a pattern as we went a long in the video fewer and fewer chews each time before deciding it was terrible. I think the worst sandwich only took two chews to determine inedibility.
I wonder if the anchovies were different 100 years ago? I know some European anchovies are more like mini sardines than the extra salty stuff we have here. Maybe anchovies were more like that in the North America of 100 years ago.
"No... No... No, no, no, no thank you. 04:44 LOL!!
great channel. I will sometimes eat crackers with peanut butter, cheese, and a dash of hot sauce. oh no, am I regularly eating one of the worst sandwiches of 2023?
Oh, I don't know, I can see your combo working especially well with a sriracha or a habanero-based hot sauce.
You have a very intriguing channel
Thank you
You sir are brave & I just brought stock I pepto Bizmall
This is truly a dark day indeed for sandwich-kind.
tbh all these anchovy ones sound and look great
you sound so dejected at some point during each of these lololol
Barry is the guy you want sitting at your poker table...Well suffered, sir!
Haha this was freakin hilarious.
I was in elementary school, my best friend (from a potato farm family) and I took cold lunch to school after the big holidays. She had several days where she would bring a sandwich with her that she called a stuffing sandwich. It was made with two pieces of bread-filled with, yep-stuffing was leftover stuffing 😂. I laughed about it then and I’m still laughing 😂
One of my grandfathers would make those for himself after any holiday dinner. No condiments or anything; just dressing slapped between white sandwich bread. He also grew up during the Depression, which I figured might have something to do with it once I got older. Interesting to hear that he wasn't the only one to do that!
Briliant video.
For the salmon butter and asparagus sandwich, since it’s a European recipe, I feel like it should’ve said jarred asparagus instead of canned. Jarred asparagus is much higher quality and is very common in Europe.
I wish it had called for jarred.
I'm European and jarred asparagus is readily available. Haven't seen it canned, though. But, it is still not good. I love asparagus, green and white but I wouldn't eat it jarred.
@@spinni81 agreed, nothing compares to fresh asparagus, but the jarred German version is in my opinion definitely better than the canned American asparagus
I really feel like the spanish sandwich should get a second shot (if it hasn't already), honestly. The extra vinegar lost me and there's gotta be something out there that can cut through the anchovy, otherwise it sounds like it would be reasonably decent
Pickled onion and jam is one you should give a go
That first yeast sammich is like a poor man's Vegemite! Maybe yeast cakes were smaller back then. I have a cheese suggestion - if you like Roquefort, try some Shropshire cheese. It's a veined cheddar and delicious. Thanks for braving the sandwich wars - into the breach!
7:55🤣🤣🤣
My rakeaway ftom the year 2023: avoid yeast and abd anchovy paste when wriying sandwuch recipes 😂.
thanks for the belly laughs. fresh steamed or roasted asparagus would have done the trick. canned is for bomb shelters.
A triumph of worstness
Ok, now do the 10 best plus ups!
It’s angry Barry!
Every time I have watched you make yeast sandwiches with that block of Fleischman's I am elated for your friends and family that you threw them out after a bite rather than trying to finish it. 😂 The gas...
I think it would be fair going forward if use your own judgment to dial back on anchovy paste when a recipe calls for an amount you know will be entirely too much.
That’s a good idea. Modern anchovy paste is a lot saltier than was a century ago - the original sandwich would not have been that salty.
So, my thing is to make the sandwiches as-written, then plus them up for the modern palate if they have potential. I do Recipe Remixes where I try to keep the intent of the sandwich but make it tasty from the get go. I do thinks some of these could be redeemed.
@@SandwichesofHistory I understand. I still want to see the uncomfortable combinations of sweet pickle relish, and so on. But I’d also be tolerant of slight tweaks on literal salt and perhaps only anchovy paste. When you know something is going to be an inedible salt lick from reading the recipe, halving the proportion might save some bread from the bin. Particularly for a sandwich that isn’t likely worth a remix.
somehow I knew the yeast sandwich would be the star of this video
Have we been good enough viewers to get a supercut of trash can shots
Haha! Alas, I have not the time but maybe at the end of this year.
people sure ate a lot of anchovies back then...
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much!
may I inquire as to where to buy the shirt you are wearing?
Sure! I bought it at Lands End but these types of shirts show up rarely there and disappear quickly. So, happy hunting!
I sure hope liverwurst is not on the ten worst sandwich list! ☺️
9:11 Probably went great with moonshine.🥃
note to self: go light on the anchovies.
esp anchovy paste
A lot of people wrote in to say "no".🤣
NUTRITIONAL yeast
NOOCH!!! 🎉
Go with that. Vegans love it, use as a Parmesan cheese substitute.
Just regular yeast? 🤮
Yeah, a nooch sandwich made the Top 10 Overall!
1909 cavalcade of horrors😂
Oh Barry, we're here precisely FOR the bad sandwiches and nothing else. #RipAIFriday
This is awful and hateful and not right! It should've never been published! This video made me laugh so hard I was in tears. Me=😂😂😂😂😂.
Cheddar with annatto = Red Leicester.
l made an *awesome* sandwich when l had "the munchies" one night with 2 slices of toasted bread, smeared with butter, a cold leftover fried boneless porkchop, thinly sliced onion, HP Sauce and a deep fried apple turnover, all squished between the toasted bread.
OMG! lt was SO good!
4:10😂😂😂
Dude! Sandwiches, man.
Its funny I would legit eat most of these
Is the yeast sandwich meant to be like a homemade marmite thing?
Sadly, no. Apparently in the 1920s, Fleischmann's wanted to sell more yeast. So they created a campaign with a marketing company to get folks to eat fresh yeast "for health." And it caught on for a while.
.75! Was that the only quarter-point-scale rating in SoH history??
Before watching my bet is the horrible anchovy paste one getting top (bottom?) marks
3 doesn't look bad😂
I'm going to make each and every one of these and that will be New Year's Eve menu. Because I'm Catholic and I need to punish myself for another year of endless sin.
*sign of the cross*
You looked scared before you tasted that yeast ketchup thing. Why make a sandwich with yeast anyway? I think just ketchup on bread would make a better sandwich
This format has a portmanteau scary movie vibe which is appropriate given the sandwiches!
Even the thumbnail has an eerie and unsettling vibe.
