- Join Scott on another adventure back in time to explore the History of Makeup. This episode, we'll be taking a look at the 1990s and the birth of the supermodel.
The 90s gave birth to iconic fashion shows, television series, dial-up internet, new music genres, and blockbuster movies. Nickelodeon and MTV ruled the small screen, while supermodels ruled the runway-and the world-with their beauty.
Unlike the boisterousness of previous decades, the 90s saw a turn toward simple, low-maintenance styles. A generation that some called “apathetic” championed minimalist, almost sartorial fashion: spaghetti strap slip dresses, overalls, chokers, and combat boots.
Grunge, inspired by the edgy look and sound of bands like Nirvana, was the peak of fashion. At the same time, 90s hip hop fashion saw flashy, oversized jackets, big chains, and bucket hats.
90s makeup ran the gamut. Everyone wore nude, brown or burgundy lips with liner, and eyeshadow ranged from smokey brown and muted monochromes to frosty blues and pinks. Contouring was becoming more popular and brows were thin and arched. Body glitter also made its debut in the 90s.
Watch as Scott recreates a 1990s supermodel runway look with a sculpted contour, nude lip, and soft gray and black shadows that deepen the crease. Then, see how hairstylist Frank Galasso styles voluminous supermodel waves before the final runway photoshoot.

The 90’s are my favorite era and i lived through it in my 20’s. I’m 49 now. I still do my makeup like the 90’s. Bobbi Brown was all the rage. My husband likes French acrylics. I can’t get into today’s Instagram makeup trends. In 30 years we’ll be looking back and recreating IG makeup.

@@TheAlsdkf if you didn’t know how to do makeup in the 90’s, indeed it was terrifying. Never used sparkles though. All muted mocha tones. You might be thinking of the Y2K era. Lots of blue sparkles then.

I’m dressing 1925 today and wondering if I should do the look of the 20’s. When I think of the 90’s I remember French nails, thin eyebrows and yes, lip liners: dark lip liner in comparison to

This decade is just my time. Leaving school, clubbing resembling the silver dress, meeting my husband, the make up is just my style of make up. I still use those shades of blush, I still go deep with bronzer, I use browns and greys more than anything else on my eyes. I still love my lined lip with a beige pink toned lipstick. I just bloody love it. My foundation does tend to be much more natural and not so matt looking though now, my skin can’t handle it anymore. Just a few tweaks here and there, like I actually have eyebrows now, admittedly microbladed to grow them back from the thin line. I’ve still got some of my 90’s clubbing dresses hanging in my wardrobe that I just can’t part with, many Lipsy London that are just totally different to now. Come to think of it, I have 3 decades worth of Lipsy London x
