My old 1987 Suburban opens like that. I pull the handle and bang on the back end of the hood. 3 or 4 wacks and it pops open. Keeps the battery thieves out.

I personally would recommend JB Weld to stop radiator leaks. On the outside!
@@roberthunter5059 I had to use JB Weld when I cracked the top of my radiator when I was replacing the hoses and found that while JB Weld can withstand the pressure, it eventually melted off from the heat.
It will be cool to have Mr. Scotty as an uncle or granpa.
That would be like having a family member as a doctor etc.
You know what else helps? Lubing the latch once a year to minimize stress on the cable.

That's not always easy especially if you live in a very humid area. The cable can rust and break internally. Condensation would certainly play a role when the cable is under the hood exposed to heat from the engine and changes with weather.
But it's the cable that snapped internally

I just read about that. Never done it in 7 years.
I found the best way to put the wire back easily is to tie a string to the old cable BEFORE pulling it out from inside. To install the new one attach the string to the new cable and pull from under the hood. This way, the new cable follow the exact same path as the old one. VOILÀ !
I had just watched a video about this the other day and the guy used this method as well.
Scotty holds back a few trade secrets cuz, well ? Like lining up the the old position of the latch before cranking it tight lol

I wondered myself why he didn't just tape the new cable to the old cable, and the new cable would be in place as the old one is removed.
Not all cars are an assembly. Disconnect cable from pull handle and latch. On my car, the latch end has the nub, which is broke. The interior end just has the little metal piece. Cut the nub off, tape interior end of new cable to underhood end of old cable. Pull from inside.
It's almost like you can read my mind...The release latch for my 2003 tacoma's hood rusted until it finally broke off. Thanks for the video Scotty!

This has been happening to me more and more, where I have an issue with my car and Scotty will post a video about it within the span of a day or two.
Occasionally spraying the latch release mechanism with penetrating oil such as WD-40 can eliminate many problems like that. It's also a good idea for door locks, the ignition lock, door hinges, the trunk locking mechanism and any other mechanism on you car that can wear or get rusty. Five or ten minutes every six months lubricating all your car's mechanisms can save you a lot of trouble down the road.

2 tips to make this repair alittle easier. 1) Attach the new cable to the old one before pulling the old one out, works like fish tape. 2) (Optional) Buy a cable lube injector. It is a tool to allow you to force spray lube into cables like this and the ones on hand brakes for bikes. So you never have to do this repair ever again.
My tip: use the old cable to pull the new through by taping together.
or use an other cable with no attachments on both sides works better...
Yes, cut off the cabin end of the cable and fish the new one in with the old cable.
this is exactly what I came to the comments section to look for. a great many times I've taped about 4-6 inches of the ends of the cable together to ease this process.
I question if the tape is that strong!

The spring broke on my friend's Impala, the dealership wanted 60$ to replace the latch unit. I said screw that! I went and bought a spring at the hardware store for 2$. Worked ever since.

Most mechanics (especially those at dealerships) do not do repairs, they replace assemblies. Magic words: serviced as a unit.
@Thomas Headley dealerships don't want cars just hanging around and they don't want them coming back due to a "bad" repair. If the part is replaced, both the customer and the dealer have the peace of mind that the problem is "solved". Plus the customer is in and out in a reasonable amount of time, increasing customer satisfaction.
Which would be more profitable, one car that takes 3 hours to repair with $30 in parts or 3 cars that take an hour to replace $100 assemblies?
As I see this car has great access to hood latch, but when you try to do this job on German cars... uhhh
Any European car for that matter. I own a Peugeot and even replacing a simple bulb is a pain.

They are electronic now. You have to go to dealer only and will take a few day to do it. labor time cos the same as change the engine, forever.

Joe Vignolo His idea works too sometimes something a little more robust than the existing cable is needed.
@@NicholasOrlick Nothing will work all the time on every vehicle. Another problem can be if they clamped the original cable somewhere and the clamp is inaccessible.

Scotty you amaze me sometimes. You make a hard job look easy. I've done this job on a Ford Focus and it took me two hours to finish the job. I did tape the new Dorman cable to the old cable before I pulled it though. Loved this video. It ain't easy, even an old man can do it, like me !

A couple of tips. Attach some wire to the old cable before pulling it from the inside. This way the wire could be used to put the new cable (attached to it) in by pulling from the engine side. And to test if it works, do it with the hood up before trying with the hood closed. Sometimes spare parts are not as good as the originals and may work in a diferent way or not work at all
Good one Scotty. I had similar problem on 2001 a4 the interior plastic handle was broken . The reason they break and cables break is sometimes because the latch in front gets corroded and stiff due to weather, snow salt etc... so easy maintenance is to clean and apply grease to moving latch parts making sure the thing moves easily and force wd40 or spray lube into the cable shield using the tiny tube on spray tip and tape it to cable / shield joint. Then pull the cable back and forth until it loosen up. After that the thing moved so well it was possible to open the hood easily even though half the plastic handle had been broken.

Sometimes the Hood Latch gets Stiff or Dirty from Dust, Dirt, etc.
I use Silicone Spray to Free Up the Hood Latch. Then it works like new, without replacing the Entire Cable.

There’s a resurgence in catalytic converter theft here in the B.C lower mainland.
My GS300 has this issue. IT will open but ir wont relatch for about 8 hours!
My hood release handle broke today. I have been so PISSED because I just finished some other repairs on my vehicle and of course SOMETHING ELSE BREAKS. This guy cheered me up AND helped me with fix my hood latch.

Most cars have a way to open a gas cap door inside the trunk . If you look for it behind the trunk lining youll probly see a cable you can pull to open it .

Hey Scottie. My problem was with an old Ram pickup. Rust was the culprit. The cable was fine.
How did you figure out that it was rust and you didn't have to replace the cable?
You should be able to tie some heavy twine to the old cable before you pull it out. Once out, detach or cut the twine and tie it to the new cable, then pull the twine and new cable into the engine compartment. Had that problem with a late model Toyota Camry gas tank latch. Plastic doohickey in cover disintegrated.
Both me and my dad had similar problems with our Ford trucks and now since I have a newer Corolla I was feeling so good about myself. Thanks a lot! 🤣

@@hotwheel6663 They are. I have owned many and never had any real big dollar problems. When I finish with a Toyota I dont even try to sell it. Usually by 450,000 miles they are getting pretty beat up and so I drive them to the motor salvage and buy a new one.
@@hotwheel6663 Well considering I've done major work on all the myriads of American vehicles I've bought while I watched my mom and sister just truck along problem free in their Toyotas, I do consider them bulletproof.
My Expedition just blew its head gaskets and the repair would have been thousands and it's got 250,000 miles on it. One might say that's a lot but to make it that far, it had to have the front suspension and steering completely rebuilt, and remanufactured transmission installed. To change the spark plugs (bad design by Ford) and intake manifold gaskets it was $900, just before the head gaskets blew. I'm not mentioning all the "little" problems like mentioned in this video on top of all that.
Got a newer Corolla and only buying Toyota from now on.
That hood latch broke because the mechanics had to keep repairing items under that hood continuously 😂😂GM❌

That's what I was thinking! Even though the cable is broken, the outside part of it should still be intact enough to pull the new one through
@@snakeplissken3021 "broke" meaning it didn't work but not "broke" meaning in two pieces? It would still work to pull the new cable through.
Wrong direction, maybe. If the inside part was too thick you could not pull it through the firewall hole. Scotty used a dowel to pull from inside to outside. Success is its own teacher.

Don't forget to mark the location of the latch so it closes properly. It can be too high or too low, or L&R. I used to adjust these at GM for good fit.

Hey Scotty I’ve been trying to figure out one problem with my car for 5 years. It’s a 95’ Mustang V6 model and around 30 minutes in it stalls and doesn’t start back up for about 20 minutes. (It doesn’t overheat). What could it be? Thanks.

My 97 mecury cougar would start and drive about 30 miles and then die. After it sit about an hour it would start and go again. I decided to replace the ignition coil and when I started to unplug the wiring to the coil I noticed the latch holding the wiring cable to the coil was broke. I went to salvage yard and got a replacement latch and spliced onto mind. Fixed the problem. When it got hot the wiring would expand and lose contact. Cool off and make contact.

Yes.
Yes, only if you gonna wait long time on that traffic light without moving at all.
I only do when stopped at a train track or road construction where I have to wait more than a minute or so. Some times I even shut off the engine.
@@jeffruebens8355 I live in NYC and I estimate that I waste at least a gallon of gas while stuck in bumper to bumper traffic.
@Daniel Bencosme many of the new Chevrolet vehicles come with "start stop" technology. the car engine shuts off when stopped at a traffic light and other stops (in order to save fuel). Once the gas peddle is pressed the engine starts back up
A better suggestion for fishing the new cable through the system is similar to what I do with wiring jobs...
You attach the new cable to the old one, whether with duct tape or whatever, and then pull the old one out. It pulls the new one in with it, and voila, done in one swoop
good video clip scotty. another helpful way to open the bonnet "hood" while using 2 people 1 pulls the cable, the other pushes down on the bonnet. i remember doing this 30 years ago with the old mans 1978 hx Holden Kingswood
scotty i have a neighbor with a 2007 vw golf that he owned since new he puts premium gas in it can he put regular without any problems
You should be able to, most modern cars can use either/or...your Engines Computer and Control Modules will make the necessary adjustments to burn that fuel efficiently. I don't think you need to worry about it too much if the Dash Fuel Guage says Unleaded Fuel Only...you'll be fine.
Yes. Modern cars adapt to run on different grades of fuel. It won't hurt anything.
He can put regular in it no problem, even if it is a GTI version.
If it has a turbo charger it requires premium fuel. If it does not have a turbo charger it should be run on regular. Premium will actually return lower mpg in anything naturally aspirated.

I'm sure it would but since he was doing this on a donation vehicle , I don't think he thought about it
No lube needed, not enough movement to wear anything, plus attracts dirt and causes mechanism to stick, if you must only lube pivot points wipe off any excess and keep area clean.

Disloyal Dashie I remember snapping a cable on a Chevy S-10 simply by pulling the lever. This was in about 2000 and the thing was only maybe 1-2 years old at the time. GM garbage.

Did the job, and it went well. Thanks to Scotty, but also thanks to the comments posted here. I used the tip of tying a feed wire to the old cable before I pulled it through the firewall. Made it much easier to get the new cable back through the other direction.
