A lot of people in ancient times thought that women had sinned or were cursed when they had their period. In some cultures, women would get punished every time it happened. Pretty messed up.
in some native tribes the woman would get the whole week off and the would go sit in a hut that was basically a sauna bleeding out onto moss pads, and the would be brought food and water and would just chill out with their synced buddies.
I know that people used to have to go into the desert until they stopped bleeding because it made them "unclean"
Considering the lifespan was shorter, women started puberty later than they do now, and women were almost always pregnant, plus you can prevent them by breastfeeding, women historically used to have significantly fewer periods than we do now. But that's just a generalization, it probably varied region to region in the world. :)
