In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didn't deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss.
So I promised the last person to finally say no to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United Breaks Guitars is the first of those songs.
United Breaks Guitars Song 2:
• United Breaks Guitars ...
United Breaks Guitars Song 3: United We Stand on the Right Side of Right

This is the most impressive complaint about poor customer service I have ever seen!
Games and Science would be awesome if they did a new one titled United Airlines Beats Doctors... >,> in honour of the doctor who was flying home to open a free clinic for veterans and was beaten and lost two teeth and got a conscussion because United Airlines felt they had the right to beat a passenger because they had overbooked the flight and he refused to get off the flight he paid for...
Comedienne Nicole Byer found fecal matter on a blanket given to her by a flight attendant on a Delta flight. They eventually agreed to fault and were going to offer her some compensation but she had to sign an NDA, she told them off and that she was just going to tell her story on her upcoming Netflix special

United excels at avoiding the obvious and easy fix until it escalates. In my case, they wouldn't give me back my first class upgrade certificate after they didn't honor it, and a few well-placed letters later, I had 14 upgrade certificates in my mail. I didn't have to write a song (but I really wish I could).
Well it was unrealised loss so all good now
....Elaborate??? Was there a legal case set up?
14 years later and whenever I hear “United” in any context, my brain fills in “breaks guitars”
I also refused to travel with them
Me too!! The song has a great beat and gets into your head fast!!
So whenever I hear “United,” I fill in the next two words. Lol.
Talk good or bad, but talk about it can be a good marketing strat. I flew with them often cause they were cheap, but no tv, plain flight A to B. It's still so damaging to be stuck with that song forever, the only cure is to buyout Gibson or Airline lol whatever guitar brand, then pay for a superbowl ad "At United, we now build guitars" 😂
I also remember united throwing that doctor off the plane, so I always think of “United, we put the hospital in hospitality”
This guy should write jingles for commercials!
Always flew Southwest. We were coming home from Arizona after visiting our family for Thanksgiving and we had some really cool shirts we got. I remember I had a Jeep shirt that was right out on top when my dad closed the suitcase the last night we were there. When we got home the shirt was gone. Not in any of our other luggage. A few others were missing too. The ground crew or someone swiped em and we lost about $100 worth of stuff and some really cool shirts I loved.
I had a really odd experience with Spirit last time I flew with them a year ago. Your not the only one who had some clothing stolen though mine was literally every piece of underwear I brought with me on my trip. Laptop was perfectly fine though thankfully but it was still a weird and gross experience.
@@victoriascott774That's just weird. I feel you on that. Some years ago I had two other female roommates. We all had flown from the same airlines and gotten a ticket saying our luggage was searched. They wound up dethreading my pants for some reason and also took all of our razers. This was check in baggage too. Creepy how someone's stealing used razers.
Try the TSA. That happens to people.
Testimony to the voice of the customer, literally amplified!
The power of the internet. “Smoke-on-the-water” by Deep Purple was also an amazing success fueled by the disaster of their venue and equipment being burned down by a lunatic.
Recently I have been traveling with our startup’s prototype as carry-on on direct flights. A couple of times I was asked to check it and I said, “if you lose or break it, it will make sure you will replace its build cost of $50,000 plus liquidated damages as it is revenue generating equipment.”
Only once we compromised on “gate-check”. We now shrink the design size and cost by a factor of ten to avoid scale-up and avoid these nail-biting situations. The only positive outcome of such a mishap could be that I could go back to playing guitar and compose a song😂.
Yeah I'm pretty sure the grounds crew stole my luggage in Philadelphia after I was forced to check the bag in at the gate, handed it to the loading crew and that was the last I saw it. I like to picture some man walking around wearing my short shorts in Philly

So sorry for your loss! Even a replacement would not be the same because a guitar conforms to the artist after a time. Every guitar, even from the same company, is unique. Baggage handlers should treat every instrument and piece of handicapped equipment with special care because they are sooooo fragile! But, as a user of disability equipment, if my power chair got creamed, a replacement would be adequate. A musical instrument such as a guitar is irreplaceable and I'm happy your video got so many likes!

just a bummer that none of the higher-ups feel it. they just do shit like take away benefits from regular employees and cut out all leave payout and grants and funds for employees that aren't completely mandatory by law, so the people on the board of directors, or anyone who's job title is a commonly recognized acronym, get to still give themselves insane 6 and 7 figure bonuses, then pat each other on the back. this would have had to make an impact so profound that it made them non-viable financially to continue. if they can rearrange the books, or crunch numbers by taking away from regular hourly/salaried employees to satiate the corporate elite's greed, they'll absolutely do that every single time, and they'll never learn, which means they'll just make their employees and stockholders bare the full force of the negative financial consequences that stuff like this brings about which leads to them unscathed to just keep on keepin' on. hella dope, right?
Share prices going down isn't an actual loss. It's a loss on paper. When shares go down, nobody loses anything unless you have to sell your shares at a price below what you paid for them. Regardless, it wasn't United that "lost" when their share prices go down. It's the shareholders.

Many years ago, I had a similar experience on a smaller scale. I lived in a group home with two sections, separated by floor. I was one of the second floor residents. Our food kept getting stolen by one of the first floor residents. There was nothing preventing the first floor residents from accessing the second floor refrigerator.
We begged the staff to install some kind of lock to keep the first floor residents out of the second floor. They showed complete indifference towards us for countless months, during which food kept getting stolen. Eventually, they started interviewing someone who was considering moving into the group house. I told him, "if you move in here, you'll risk getting your food stolen by someone living on the first floor who has easy access to the second floor refrigerator." Just one day later, I saw locksmiths installing digital locks on the doors to the second floor staircases. They'd been ignoring the problem for months, but as soon as I started scaring away potential buyers, they fixed the problem in only a day.
Ultimately, Dave Carroll and I learned the same lesson: if you want the authorities to start taking their job seriously, threaten them with bad publicity.
After hearing this, I'm never going to fly by United again.

I just need to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for this song. :) United Airlines broke my $5,000 wheelchair this summer (and I finally just raised enough money to replace it). I have never in my life met a more heartless and indifferent group of people. I'm flying again this week with my new wheelchair, and I'm absolutely terrified after what they did to me and my service dog. So thank you for this song. I'm going to play this on a continuous loop during my trip, to hopefully ease my nerves a bit. That was the first and last time I will ever fly United Airline. :) Even though this video is 6 years old and about a guitar and not a wheelchair, it still made me feel so much better. I needed this...

I was a flight attendant when this came out. I always let passengers bring their instruments in the cabin. Let them take up a bunch of overhead space! Musicians are awesome passengers. I once had an entire flight of ACL performers flying Austin to Newark. It was amazing. Everyone was so chill. They ALL stayed seated so a woman in the last row could get off and try and make her connection to Norway. Bring Back Art!
They made me like leave it by the door of the plane and they put it somewhere else. Was waiting outside the door when I departed. It worked.
Too bad as a flight attendant, you are already beyond the point when a traveler may have checked their bag.

@@solanuskc4303 Yeah this story makes no sense if they were an actual flight attendant
One time I just was allowed to put it overhead... Other time, they spotted my guitar with me in the queue, told me to stay by the side, waited until the whole queue was on the plane, and only then, 10 minutes before take off, told me to buy extra sit for the instrument... Thanks Ryanair

***** The two custom made guitars were given to him by Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars. When United belatedly offered him $1,200 for repairs and $1,200 for in convenience, he refused to take it and United donated the money to the charity of Dave's choice.
They should have bought him a new guitar because taking reasonable care of customer's belongings in their care is their responsibility. That bit about $180,000,000 drop is a nice way to end a story on a feel-good note, but the conclusion you are supposed to draw from basic stock-market volatility is as misleading as any Hollywood fairytale ending.
United is actually using this video as an example of why you shouldn't go around breaking people's luggage, and why good customer service is important.

Is it though? Because after this United moved from guitars to people, then ended up having record sales and record high stocks. 😒
This is about to become popular again.
Yep.
And this poor girl also suffered from abuse: slippedisc.com/2017/01/united-airlines-smashed-my-cello-to-pieces-please-help/
John Hoyt that's right
John Hoyt i been refering to it on all the dragged off asian guy videos
Still is😂
This is the most creative way I have seen of addressing this, we all have experienced something like this too.
Yep, still loving this in (almost) March 2024! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This never gets old... It's hard to fathom why United didn't offer the band $100,000 for the rights to this song to get it off the Tube! I sure hope the band gets royalties from the Tube!! 21.7 Millllllion views!!
That would probably make it worse as that's pretty close to censorship. Anyway, even an apology wouldn't save them at this point.
Yes, I watch it third or fourth time after few duration.
I don't no why I like it too much.
considering he would have made around 48k on this video it seems like it turned out pretty good for him.

When I was training at Southwest Airlines as a new hire for the ramp they showed us this video. They said that this video ended up costing United airlines a fortune. If they had just replaced his guitar they could’ve avoided so much trouble.
Southwest has the best service! I fly them whenever possible. They're especially good if you travel with someone who needs a wheelchair in the terminal. One time they were short of pushers, and so a pilot took care of the little old lady traveling on her own.
Yes. Our band flies Southwest whenever possible, for many reasons.
I love how Southwest is using this as a training video
I love this, 14 years later
1:40 Rest In Piece Taylor........
This is the most expensive guitar ever crashed. 180mil. $
Should be stored in a museum.
I approved of the proposal
Expensive*
@Jude Boon wait why did it cost them 180 mil
@@ecardona70 it caused their stocks to fall and in end they lost 180 million

My job used this as an example of the repercussions of bad customer service! Years later your statement is still being heard. Love it.... the power of music!!
my teacher in indonesia use this as teaching us bad costumer service in economic and ngl we lovs it
the music suck for us student but make it better in story
@@raymond9479 Same, I’m in Australia and my Business Studies teacher used this as an example of what poor customer service and word of mouth can do to even a major business. It had pretty much just happened at the time that we were looking at the case.
@@raymond9479 what are you talking about this music is fire
I just learned of this NOW... In 2022. Great song!
Great, thank you, the United learned their lesson hard way, I flew with them just recently and the service was amazing
Sorry for your loss, but this song is amazing.
United: Let's see, whose property should I break?
A. Military Vet - nah, we'll get beaten up
B. Lawyer - Nah, we'll get sued
C. Musician - oh yes, the perfect one
Musician: *So, you have chosen death*
*breaks doctor*

"We put the Hospital in Hospitality."
That's great, Ed!!
lol :D
XD
hahaha, that's hilarious!
That was clever, lol.
14 years have passed but this gem will never die and its justice for those poor guitars
What a genius!🙌 Song's catchy, message is loud and clear
I can't believe this case is being taught to me in Master of business administration in services marketing
lovely
Don't be. I play this video at the start of a IT class in customer management. Companies who don't care for their customers care for their investors even less and that is what kills the stock.
business information technology student from Finland here, i bet this is the most used example of how to f*ck things up in service design
@@tonttu94fin What's that line? - "Hold my Beer!" Boeing is giving a good run for the money with the 737Max fiasco. That will end up being a MBA case study as well.
😂😂 that’s epic
The most passive aggressive and proper diss track I've ever heard
Edit: Since when the hell did this get 941 likes
Hardly passive aggressive - it's straight up aggressive. And brilliant.
I can only imagine how cathartic writing, singing, and producing this music video felt. The whole world is on his side, and we all loath companies that treat us this way... like shit.
@@MrPitcherG From now on all distracts should be in the form of country songs.

Fly United checklist:
-Bring no pets
-Bring no musical instruments
-Prepare for a beating
It's the Battle Royale of airlines, you are going to have to fight to stay on that plane.
What happened with the puppy?
@@gamingbitchface6823 I'll never fly United again. In 2015 I flew United from Huston to Bogota. It was the flight from hell. Those cheap bastards actually charged extra for everything even water. This was a seven hour flight. But the worst part was that every seat had a TV screen that blasted the passengers with ads for the entire flight. The only way to make it stop was to pay a fortune for one of the terrible movies they wanted to sell us.
I actually paid a about 200 bucks more for a flight back from Singapore a few weeks ago just so I wouldn't have to fly United.
@@Mars-ev7qg I know somebody who flew Newark-Manila with most of the stopovers in US territory. They served no food for 23 hours because said US stopovers were domestic, and domestic flights need no food, according to United.
@@gamingbitchface6823 unfortunately in some markets, it's the only option. So as much as people want to boycott United, the sad fact is that they have a monopoly in multiple markets. That is why they had record earnings even after beating that one passenger.
I love that after 11 years, this case is still relevant in my MS Professional Writing and Integrated Marketing classes. I know I'll be humming this song tonight in class as we delve into discussions about Dave's (very appropriate) response to some of the worst customer service ever (UA). Thanks, Dave! As a Martin Girl-I get it about your Taylor!
Thanks Raven!! Good luck with your Marketing class.
Hope you'll also check out the new song I released yesterday:

@@sonsofmaxwell My only critique is you should have sung "United, United, United (you know what I mean, I'm sure you tried it that way and it didn't work, but it sounds better in my head like that, having a arpeggio of " Uniteds"). Nicely played. ✌️🇦🇺
Forever ❤
I love my Guitar and such an amazing song about guitar is a blessing for me. Thankyou so much for this beautiful song brother.❤❤❤❤❤
I know a lot of musicians and it's not just the cost of the guitar but it's YOUR guitar, the one that you're used to, the one that sounds good etc. Watching people throwing your instrument on the ground and them not caring that they broke it is heart breaking. But he got a lovely revenge.
Exactly. I have a Taylor, I’ve been playing her for 15 years; it’s irreplaceable.
I'm presently reading the book - not too far into it yet, but already Dave has moved me to tears
On a lighter note: who needs Pete Townshend when we have United?
As a musician, a lot of instruments are hard to get used to if you change them. For the first few months, something always doesn't feel right.
