My assessment on these teens are
-Brian and Andrew’s parents are both overachievers. It seems that they’re both achieving what they did not have through their children (especially in Andrew’s case)
-Claire’s parents appear to be loving, but they buy her love and have conflicting parenting styles (if mom says no, her father says yes). It seems that her parents compete for her love as well
-Allison’s ignore her (while they don’t say why, but my guess is they’re either workaholics, narcissistic, mentally ill, or substance abusers)
-Bender’s parents are physically and emotionally abusive, from a low income background or substance abusers. His father seems to have misogynistic views as he beats his wife for so much as agreeing with him and orders her around.

@PinkGuy VEVO yeah it was pretty quick for me too, I was pretty much a slacker in high school because I realized how meaningless it was (I didn't become hardworking until college) but for most teens, 4 years is forever and they think it will have a huge impact on the rest of their lives. That's why you have so many dumb 16 year old chicks claiming to be in love with their high school sweetharts because from their perspective a month of talking to them is a lifetime of knowing them even though neither of their personalities are fully developed yet due to having little to no real life experiences.

I think we all do. Over the years, I've always imagined different scenarios, and read fanfictions of it. Some times I imagine they still talk to each other like a simple hey in the halls or little silent greets like a nod. Other times I see Clare only talking to Andy while Brian is friends with Allison, Bender and Andrew (secretly). Clare being secret lovers with Bender. Bender openly talking to Clare and Andy just to see what happens. There have even been times when I imagine everything went back to normal as if nothing happened (even if I refuse to believe that and think they should be friends). The one couple I've always held out hope for was Andy and Allison. I always believed somehow, some way, they'd stay together, whether it be in secret or not.

The exchange of "I hate you!" "Yeah? Good!" between Bender and Claire is maybe one of the most intense moments in the movie because that single 5 word exchange says so much for both characters. Claire, afraid that everything he said is true, afraid that she's just as vapid and uncaring as the rest of the cliche rich kids when she wishes and wants to be more than that, better than that. And Bender who's response of "Good" continues to show how he covers up his emotions. With two words he essentially is saying 'You hate me? What do I care, everybody else does, why not you?' when in reality, it effects him more than he'll ever say.

I think the most poignant part of this entire scene is that Claire is absolutely correct in the fact that Bender would be just as embarrassed to be associated with Claire as she was with him, this wasn’t just a story about the popular kids, this is genuine high school life.

I think it’s society period. High school is a microcosm of adult life, and these teen movies never give high schoolers enough credit! Because I think these things are even truer for adults. I know far too many very grown people that care far too much what others think & would say about their lives. In school everyone was still trying to figure things out, I hung out with people I’d be hard pressed to be around as an adult and it wasn’t uncommon to see various social groups explore a bit.

I think it points to a similarity between the characters. Bender and Claire are both very much self-aware. One being at the bottom of the hierarchy, and the other being at the top of it. It's only here that Claire can be honest and show how much she doesn't like it, and that she is aware of what is happening, that as much as it makes you hate her - it makes you realize that she is in her own hell.
In the end, Bender rubs off on everyone - in a sort of - just say fuck it - kind of way. When you see Claire and Bender both acknowledge the irony of their potential relationship - even in the end - you get a feeling that she is going to be a better person because of him confronting her. When she gives him the diamond, it's a bit of the princess giving the pauper a token of her love. It may not be real, but it was in that moment.
That being said. I always feel like when Bender walks across the football field, fist in air - it's the audience getting a chance to see that Bender knew he was the winner the entire time.

Adults often forget how awful being a teenager is. Once those overwhelming emotions and imbalanced hormones of experiencing things for the first time, once all those things are gone, they’re gone for good. Unless your an adult affected by depression you’re never gonna understand how awful it is. And I think we can all agree being a teen today is way more difficult than it was in the 80s-90s. Bender likely doesn’t have many friends or very many good ones given his defensive response when asked about them. He likely doesn’t want to admit this, although he does stand up for Brian and berate Claire for her selfishness. Everyone else in the circle seems to want to maintain friendship except for Claire initially, but…
I’d like to think that Claire giving Bender her earring and thusly, Bender accepting Claire’s earring and wearing it signifies that the entire group chose to change and become friends.

It starts to become a psychological problem when parents emphasize you're not good enough if you don't achieve their standards. And you blame it on yourself. Hence why brain toke a gun. It's similar to Bender actually, just opposite.

Y’know, after Andrew’s confession about Larry and how much he regrets it, I believe him when he disagrees with Claire’s assumption that he would cut Brian up towards his friends. At the height of his dad’s influence on him, you can tell that he is just begging to break into his own person, and Claire at this point, doesn’t believe that’s possible because of her own clique and experience. It’s a really subtle way of separating two similar types of people and I love it so much. Such a brilliant scene

Failing classes junior year due to abuse from my brother. it wrecked me, my parents threatened to kick me out for my slipping grades,........ i attempted suicide in the hospital one night when i was threatened with a knife by my brother after he fought me,.......... realizing the life i was concentrated on just left me to zone out out of the world, i thought everybody and everything was just a piece of shit.................... well i hated the constant influences by others, i just thought fuck it im a do what I want to do, im not gonna live up to others satisfaction because simply i don't need to, never settle for a perfect life because it can be easily manipulated and destroyed, leaving you to think everything is done and you have to start over, not necessarily. i laughed at myself just like Brian did........ everybody has problems you just gotta be mature about it and think what exactly is your best option

Claire is absolutely right though... there's probably no way they remained friends. I had a very similar experience like this with a group of kids back in high school and once the event was over, two of them kind of remained friends (but they already were kind of friends) and the rest of us just parted ways. Once school started again I tried to reach out a couple times (like a small "hey" in the hallway or class) but was just treated as a stranger and ignored - I didn't really push it any further.
I mean the weekend was a pretty big experience for me (growth wise - I had like no friends) but the hurt afterwards was awful, I almost wish I had never even been part of the project.
Though, in the end, high school doesn't matter, you kind of forget about everything once its over and you get to restart.

It’s the same with school. You don’t remember the grades you got and classes to passed or failed. You remember the times you walked down the hallways and someone made everyone laugh, and the times someone steals a teacher’s clock (actually happened) or the funny slurs on the announcements.
That’s what you remember about school and sports

Could see if Bender's friends started picking on Brian, Bender would have spoken up and said to "knock it off" doubt he would have done much more for him. Bender would not have been the same level of snob as Clair no, but he has friends to keep too and in some ways his would be more important because they are his escape from his shitty life.
I figure Andrew and Allison never lasted long. She is not going to get a daily makeover and eventually would revert to her old ways and Andrew would cave to pressure. No way that jock's friend would not have told him to ditch her fast.
Truth is I could see Andrew and Clair as friends and Brian and Allison and friends possibly (although even that is unlikely) but I think most of them never gave more than a casual nod in the hall after leaving that detention. Claire had it right, the truth was the others didn't want to admit it. Even Brian would have likely had his friend make fun of Andrew if they tried to make a go. Yeah he wouldn't have had as much to lose or as likely to lose him, but sure "what's with being friends with the meathead who bulled us?" would come up.

Andrew is incredibly perceptive when it comes to emotion, Claire is surprisingly rational and objective, and Bender can be astonishingly articulate for someone who doesn't do well at school.

You don't have to be good at school to be astonishingly articulate. Bender could have dyslexia. As a result he can't read well so he gets poor grades. This his crappy home life leads him to repress his emotions and to lash out at authority figures, like teachers. School is more about regimentation and following the rules and way less about true intellectual exploration. I did very well in high school so I know--if you follow the rules to a T, regurgitate info well and be pleasant to teachers, you get high grades.

With brian its got to be his acceptance for others and how full of love he is. Not only is he the one character that they all get along with (even bender he just hides it) but he also shows his emotions in the crying scene. All he wants is for the rest if them to accept him they way he would accept them in front of his peers. This movie really showed how complex each characters backstory was i just wish they focussed more on brians home life. They only really showed what bender thought brians home life was like.

Each character brings something to this movie, but Ally Sheedy doesn't get enough recognition for the raw emotion she portrayed throughout. At 1:27 and 5:50, her anguish about her place in the world is so real.
She doesn't want to put on a "face" to impress anyone and just wants to be accepted for who she is. You can feel how real she is when she says, "When you grow up, your heart dies".

I actually agree with Bender here. As a loner through school, I feel the same way. The rich kids are always the jerks. If I was to show up to one of their parties, they would laugh their asses off until I left, because I wasnt one of them. Us loners know how crappy it is to do to someone, which is why we choose our friends very carefully. Our friends are just like us: loners. That way we can trust each other, but recoginze there is a barrier. We dont like to go outside of our groups because that risks exposure to pain. He also right in saying that the rich kids condecend to speak to us. They always talk to us like they know better, but they are no different. They have just as many problems and issues to deal with, the difference they use their money to mask it. It doesnt fool anyone.

Im considered a rich kid, and I’m also the loner I don’t like going to parties I try to avoid people and one of the reasons why is because whenever someone/anyone needs something I give it to them without hesitation because I know that if I were in their shoes I would like for someone to help me but at the end of the day everyone (they aren’t wealthy they are just average btw) stabbed me in the back and made fun of me, I was never gonna fit into their social group, I always used to envy them they never really accepted me so I just dealt with it and became an outsider but just because those certain people did that to me I’m not going to assume that everyone from their background is like that. And like u said we have problems too , people expect too much just because ur from a certain group. I’ve been poor when my parents abandoned me when I was 5 in a different country, I’ve been the princess when I was 11, I’ve been the criminal when I was 14, I’ve been the brain and the outsider, sometimes I’m the athlete I think that at certain times you should be one of them so u can open yourself to new perspectives and understand the world more.

Honestly, it’s true about them not remaining friends. I was a loser at my school. I also happen to go to the same church as a few of the popular kids.
We went on a trip as a youth group. Had a great time. I got to know them. They got to know me. We opened up and it felt real.
I got back to school, and nothing changed. Their friends still picked on me. They did nothing.
This scene is great, because it is real, but it’s really heartbreaking that the only kid that might get treated okay after the film is over is the one who changed to fit in.

I think ot would depend on the people. Claire's type would never friends with you and would talk about you. . Alison type would be your friend. Bender and Andy wouldn't be friendly but wouldn't ignore you or treat you bad. When this movie came out, I liked Allison the most. All these years later still do.

I love how the characters throughout the movie are so inconsistent like how teenagers are, they like each other and then they don’t, they like themselves and then they don’t. And then this conversation starts with each of them being in denial about the horrible aspects of their character, and finally after someone from another group points it out to them, they open up. Like a “this needed to happen so you can grow” kinda conversation. It perfectly represents the benefits of unity regardless of each others’ differences and honesty towards both yourself and other people.

I agree, to me it would’ve made more sense. There wasn’t any visible connection between Andrew and Allison at the beginning, I don’t get how they should have ended up together, he didn’t really notice her until she had that damn makeover, if anything Clair and Andrew together made more sense. And Bender, I mean he’s my favorite character but he’s too much of a bad boy and he really kind of treated Claire like shit so I don’t get why she liked him.

Clair had it right, some people are shocked but either things have changed a lot these days or they are kidding themselves. When I was in high school one year I was a councilors aid, which had a lot of down time and it was me and 3 other kids (well 4 but one much like Ally Sheedy never talked, no lie) and we spent a lot of time chatting, joking and having a good time. Watch from that you would think we were the best of friends. But we as the cliché goes "came from different worlds" and we never talked to each other outside those doors, other than nods in the hall I don't think any of us ever even exchanged a hello. We just absorbed back into our own social circle. High School was like that.
