I can't believe I need to say this but DON'T EAT chicken cooked in NyQuil! Like Tide Pods and questionable Pink Sauce, there are things that are just not meant to be ingested. Today I'm going to explain why the NyQuil chicken challenge is dangerous and why we need to stop trying viral food hacks that we KNOW are bad for us just for the views. The way that the normally very chill Matpat (well when he's not playing games) got _audibly furious_ as this video went on at how irresponsible the media is and how they're gonna get kids hurt by not doing their jobs just goes to show how serious this entire thing is

Matpat using his influence to actually educate people and explain how satire is a very real thing gives me hope in humanity. So much media is pure noise, but it’s the nuggets of knowledge and simple satire that make it enjoyable.
+1 to the OP. Matpat is doing what the news should have done. I'd go into more detail (already tried to), from an epidemiology and information systems design standpoint... but youtube shadowblocked the comment. Literally can't even talk about the underlying causes and mechanisms of problems like this here. In both cases though, the chicken and the blocked comment, the issue is that our information systems reward counterproductive things while punishing beneficial things.

Sure, some trends are genuinley stupid, but when the media presents things like this that are meant to be jokes in such a serious light, is when the real problem ensues. when "older" people are on a wider platform and misrepresenting the stories, that's how a lot of "younger" people can be stereotyped against. there are definitely a bunch of dumb ones, just watch any of the random street question videos, but the majority at least have the common sense to understand satire vs a real trend and (hopefully) don't follow such stupidity
Matpat actually got angry during this, which just shows how much he actually cares about people well being. He’s telling people facts to protect us, and still being funny and happy. I love his channel, he’s a great person.

If you research media, you will find that they lie all the time.
This is... exactly what happened with Tide Pods. You have to hear about it to even consider trying it, so the more people hear about it (the more it's reported, even if you're being told *not* to do it), the more people will have the idea to try it.

As a teenager who was mainly raised by my grandma who watches the news 24/7 and barely has idea of what the internet is, I can't even describe how many of this fake/exaggerated stories the tv reports on have gotten me in trouble for doing absolutely nothing other than watching some youtubers that have nothing to do with those reports/"challenges". The actual fear it gave my grandma for my safety was tremendous every single time. And, of course, is never easy to explain to people that get their news from the tv that the news actually do lie to get people to watch it, is insane.

This is TRUE.... Thought I'd never cook with Nyquill... Once day I ate a great chicken burrito that was very hot and about an hour later I took one lid of Nyquill to settle my cough, and I was constipated for three days. My body did not like that at all. NEVER again will I repeat that.

I went in to this thinking matpat was going to talk about why you obviously shouldn’t eat NyQuil chicken but it turned out to be a excellent and refreshing talk about the danger of old school media that doesn’t do it’s research as well as pointing out the real problems they should be covering. Thank you matpat for this, it’s great that every once in a while we get a serious episode that helps educate people about real world issues.

Meh, they do and they don't. Someone said this same thing about the whole "eating tide pods" thing a couple years back until I showed them the statistics from Poison Control in 2018 and 2019 where nearly 11,000 adults contacted the service for help with Tide Pod consumption and over 4,000 adults were hospitalized in the U.S. alone for it. Bare in mind, this isn't including children or specifically teenagers, the ones who mainly partook in the challenge.

And for everyone else out there, please remember that medicine should never ever be misused. And if you know anyone who needs to be taught this, please let them know. It's important enough to have those kinds of conversations even if they are awkward.
Absolutely. I think a lot of people jump straight to mocking people who _might_ be dumb enough to try this, rather than providing them with the information of why it's actually dangerous, and then they act surprised when people don't listen.

I'll admit I was worried to click on this and watch Matpat talk about NyQuil for too long about what was obviously a joke, but I was pleasantly surprised and loved this one. Good work Matpat and friends!
I completly agree with this because the news havent covered any of the serious challenges like the kiki challenge, the blackout challenge or the hot boiling water challenge that ACTUALLY hurt people and teenagers and have been fatal!(If you dont know what these challenges included here it is : The kiki challenge had teenagers jumping out of a moving car and dancing and then to get back in.This challenge was dangerous for obvious reasons and 1 teenager even fractioned her skull. Secondly, the blackout challenge wich based on the name itself screams danger. The challenge had people choking themselfs till you know they blackout and in some cases this challenge had been fatal for some. Lastly , the hot boiling water challenge had teens pouring hot boiling water on their sleeping friends. That can cause second or even third degree burns that can have an effect on your body for a long time.) And did the news ever cover that NO.
One of the people at my middle school did the knockout challenge and passed out. Ambulance was called.
She was leaning against the brick wall of the school, holding her breath, her friend thumping her chest to 'get the air out'. And she just passed out.
It amazes me the stupidity of some of these challenges. No thought to the harm that could come to themselves or people around them. And they act so shocked when the bad things DO happen
See, there was one class in college I took that centered around the news and how we should view them. In short, I think it was one of the best classes I’ve taken simply because we spent 10-12 weeks looking at news sources and stories on our own, and just actually reading and analyzing them. It was all about being aware of what exactly the news was saying, as well as checking their sources and the context that either the stories or sources emerged from.
This video reminded me exactly why that class was important, and why it’s critical to look at the sources and context of EVERY news story.
And this is just a personal opinion, but I feel like some outlets just want more attention by showing crazy stories. (A Scathing hot take, I know.)

When the Benadryl suddenly had an age-restriction, people were very confused. (I work at a pharmacy.) The news never really said anything about it. Would have been a great opportunity to advocate for medicine safety at home.

@@AbbieAj1 not just pharmacies, when I was fourteen I got told I couldn't buy NyQuil pills from the family owned corner store by my house. The owner of the store called my mom to confirm I was actually getting it for her lol.

It's effectively the same thing that happened with Tide Pods. It was a problem for all of a week, the new stations said "We can gdt views off that", and then it blew back up. Wonderful.
tweens/teens were really eating tide pods. After 2 decades of working in customer service..I can assure you, yes, people are stupid enough to cook nyquil check and eat it.

That's what I worry the most for, like I'm sure we should all be taught the common sense to not ingest anything other then food and the recommend dosage of any medicine, but then media makes it seem like overdose or anything isn't a big problem

I am glad you are pointing out the media's craziness. They can be as bad as any of the content you can stream/view online. Most news outlets want the juicy stories, and they will spin a story in their favor to sensationalize it to fill in their time on air.

Mad respect for sitting down and doing this. It points out a level of thought and effort you put into these videos in particular. A bad film theory is a funny curiosity. A bad food theory could hurt someone, and I’m glad you’ve pointed out how problematic the news reporting was. I’d love to see you do this kind of thing more often about these kinds of food scares and how trendy reporting distorts it.

Thankfully we’ve got intellectuals like the Theorist channels to keep us informed on serious matters, whilst also bringing entertaining brain food
Media has always been about "clickbait" since the very beginning. It's about getting views on whatever platform the media is on, newspapers, videos, live broadcasts, etc.
The only difference now is that it has become increasingly easier to fact check these stories thus making it even more unacceptable for such shameless behavior in supposedly professional and trusted platforms.

Let's be fair, here, though. The traditional media that MatPat talked about and showed in his video was entirely comedy pieces and Good Morning America daytime stuff. This wasn't real news discussing real events in detail, it was entirely entertainment stuff using "current events people are talking about". MatPat probably should've pointed out the difference in the video. Heck, I've seen some of those shows outright tell people not to use them as their main source of news, as they're meant for entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending this kind of stuff, but it is important to note that these shows aren't held to the same journalistic standard as real reporting, and we shouldn't lump the two together.

When my mom told me this was a thing people were actually doing I was absolutely skeptical, I didn’t do the research however so I gave into that assumption, im glad people like Mat are bringing this information to the light and going deeper because even if I did do research by skimming articles I don’t know how deep I’d have to go to find accurate information, so this is just another reminder that you have to make sure your sources are valid and to just be aware and critical of what information is given to you

Yup, did a project last year about the media. It was for a darker topic but I ended up finding out how much the media loves fear mongering and making things worse. I didn't end up finishing and submitting the project because 1. it was lengthy and 2. didn't need it for my grade so it really helped during the heaviest part of the semester. But I felt a bit guilty about not finishing it. Thanks MatPat for bringing the media out about this.

This is literally the first I've ever heard of Nyquil chicken. This whole thing definitely reminds me of the Tide Pod situation, if was just a meme until the news blew it up. That was when people started getting hurt, I wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing stories of people actually trying it now.

I hope everyone is sharing this video. Especially on Facebook where older audiences are prone to believing anything that they read/watch online. I'm sure there are grandparents out there that are really unnecessarily disappointed in their grandchildren because of these misunderstandings.
This is probably the best theory video I've seen in recent times and I honestly feel like the team did a great job educating and exposing the media, I'm just worried that the title wouldn't attract enough people to the video and realize the actual problem. Great video either way.

My initial reaction was that it was just an attention-grabbing, unsubstantial video about "wow nyquil chicken is bad for you, who would've thought?" i was pleasantly surprised. so i agree with you, i'm worried that people might overlook the video because of the seemingly meretricious thumbnail and title
