I kinda feel bad for Luigi. He’s been bossed around for his entire life by everyone else and is always in the background of his brother. He has to bottle up how he felt for years because he felt like nobody was there for him, which is kind of scary to think about. Mr. L was never evil, he was just depressed and neglected.

I would argue that Mr.L isn't the truest form of Luigi, but an exploration of what he represses. A lot of professionals use different forms of "hypnosis" to explore feelings we don't want to have/won't let ourselves know we have.

Basically, he just has an extremely overactive fear response, so when the hypnosis eliminates his inhibitions and fears, he's super brave. Granted, he's not any braver than anyone else under the influence of hypnosis, but he seems a lot braver because of how overly scared he is normally.

Well, on a base level, it means she truly prefers bowser to Mario, and is probably sympathetic to his position as a single parent just trying to get a complete family for the koopalings. The koopalings are Bowser's adopted children, and as you saw in the beginning, MatPat has already done an episode on that. So, yes. Peach, on a basic subconscious, or even conscious level, cares about Bowser more than she cares about Mario.

He's always being bullied, and most think of him as a coward or only second best. In his diary, it shows his envious thoughts and in SSBB, his FS "Negative Zone" is all of his depression, anger, and envy formed into one attack. Mr. L is when he finally snapped.

Yep. It's the basic plot of getting outshadowed by someone else. Luigi is someone with a vengeance, and a really strong one towards the people around him.
Or the Mario characters are really good actors. The whole franchise is a play after all. Just look at paper Mario, you see a bunch of Mario enemy sitting down in row of chairs to watch Mario fight someone. This happen every time he enters a battle too.

I like it when a good character is shown to have a dark side, it shows that there's always more to people than what you see or think you know.

Maybe it is harder for Luigi. Luigi does this less than Mario so he is not as used to this. And Mario could be hiding some muscle under that fat not so much Luigi who is skinny and we can see all of his muscle not much.

You really think some children's book author did as much hypnosis research as one of the world's leading game companies? That was just a mistake in the series.
Interesting theory idea. One problem though. Unlike the KRplusrs in the video who said that they felt fully there while being hypnotised Luigi is confused when Mario finds him in the Underwhere. He doesn't know how he got there and says the last thing he remember is being surrounded by Bleck's minions. He figured that was how he got there. (We know of course that he was "killed" by Dimentio in Chapter 6).
I just think Luigi had it all in him. He had all those feelings bottled inside out of jealousy and lack of self-respect.
I mean, don't we all have a little of Mr. L? Jealousy of our peers who seem to be doing better? Insufficient self-respect to accept our growing pace? Sometimes, even anger issues that can lead us to do terrible things? Don't all of these things not manifest due to inhibition, be it conscious or not?
Maybe some of us, if hipnotized in our worse moments, when we crave the worst things we could wish for, could do much worse than even Mr. L.

Oh my goodness I absolutely adored this. Super Paper Mario is one of my all-time favourite games and Luigi is one of my all-time favourite characters! I've always thought there was more to his psyche too, I personally headcanon him with anxiety but this theory just adds so much more to work with.
I have watched through all of game theory several times but I don’t remember ever seeing this one before. This is a great episode
GUYS, THIS THEORY IS BACKED UP BY ANOTHER GAME! In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, for the DS, the brothers eventually come across an area known as Star Hill. They reach a point where a talking Star Gate won't allow them through because Luigi is HIDING DARK SECRETS.
But he was lying; it was just a test for the brothers.
In another game from the same series, Dream Team, we go into the deepest parts of Luigi's mind and see NONE of this! I definitely think there was magic involved.
Jaydom Studios Actually that's a different Luigi. It's complicated but here it is: In Bowser's Inside Story you can find a secret boss where you fight the Shroobs (from Partners in Time). There the brothers mention to Starlow that they fought the Shroobs when they were babies. Meaning that they aren't the same brothers as the ones where Luigi had "dark secrets". And since in Dream Team the brothers already knew Starlow at the start of the game that means that you play as the babies (from Partners in Time) in Dream Team and not the "Older Mario & Luigi" from Partners in Time. A mouthful, yes, but debunked.
Jaydom Studios So basically, the Mario & Luigi from Superstar Saga & Partners in Time are different from the Mario & Luigi from Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, and Paper Jam.

He's always been one of my favorites. He is always overlooked, much like I am.
To get this straight, luigi is the reincarnation of count blecks great grandfather (count bleck is a villian in super paper mario who tries to destroy the world). When luigi is hypnotised he goes back to his previous life. It says in the game "was reincarnated to a man in green" and dimentio says dimentio is the ultimate source to the chaos heart

Luigi may HAVE a bad SIDE to him... but you can't really blame him! his self-esteem is quite low (shown by his life-sized mental image of himself in Mario and Luigi: Dream Team), he was traumatized as a baby (according to ANOTHER 1 of MatPat's theroies), his allies always expect him to obediently do as told (and he DOES!), AND he's ALWAYS overshadowed by his HEROIC, FEARLESS, FAMOUS BIG brother Mario "HOORAY! MARIO SAVED THE DAY! Oh, hey Luigi..." He 's always seen as the sidekick, the side guy, the tag-a-long, the scared-y cat... the iconic... Player 2...

I mean, it is CLEARLY shown that Luigi loves his brother, will do anything for the betterment of good, is always patriotic and trustworthy towards his duty as a hero and ghost buster (no matter how,scared, terrified, mortified, and cowardly he is due to his infantile traumatization), finishes the job he started, AND will happily follow the orders of those he trusts... he may not be the most self-confident individual, taking little scraps of pride and praise as they come and go BECAUSE everyone sees him as the lesser of 2 brothers, but he's still an honest, careful, and kind soul!
But... He doesn't want to be Player 2 anymore...
Oh, also... I LOVE Super Paper Mario! It MIGHT be my favorite game of all time! Just wish that it had a boss arena or sumthin'... oh well. Still an awesome anime-esque game.

This theory explains alot! It explains Mr. L's behavior, like his Narcissism. "Just one of Count Bleck's more promising Minions!" He's finally free to be proud of who he is and isn't afraid to show it. Like a compressed spring. After being put down by his brother all the time, with the help of Hypnosis he's free to become an explosion of self pride. "Hey, Mrjumpsallthetime! Now we'll see who's the better Jumper!"
Those who are oppressed when they fight to free themselves from that pressure always encourage pride in themselves afterwards.

No. I don’t think so. Luigi is the younger brother of Mario. Younger brothers want to be like their oldest brother. Luigi tries so hard but never gets the chance. He keeps away those feelings because he loves and wants to love his brother. Luigi is a nice person and doesn’t want to hate anyone he would rather love them. I mean. Does Luigi ever get angry at anyone at all really?

@@octogaming3815 well, Mr. L could just be the jealousy part of Luigi. Luigi tries so hard to get some respect and recognition, but mario absorbs it all. Notice how in games where mario receives compliments and recognition, hes so used to it he doesnt show much emotion anymore. However, luigi when he receives just a HINT of recognition, he makes a big deal out of it because he never gets any in the first place. I understand what you mean by the brothers love each other, which they do. Mario would choose Luigi over treasure or a castle any day, but that doesnt mean Luigi is happy. Can we blame him for becoming Mr. L? Over the years his sanity probably drained and he changed his moral code. Luigi is jealous of Mario's jumping abilities, even though he jumps HIGHER than Mario. Which means, Luigi has been put off as such a let-down, that he wasnt aware of what hes capable of doing nor gave himself credit for anything, until he awoke his mind and became Mr. L. In the state of Mr. L, he finally had his chance to shine and he uses that chance in a strategic way. Heck, he was so great that he became the final boss of the game! Obviously, the player knows what Luigi is capable of so when they see luigi, scared out of his shorts, they frown upon him. But, hes scared of danger because he doesnt know that hes able to get the job done because everyone just sees him as a let-down. Luigis life is very sad, this is why hes my favorite mario character.
