it's honestly amazing how he made an entire beat to a song in a matter of minutes under that much pressure
The speed of this was fake. It was already setup ahead of time. Just watch it again and you can tell how it was setup ahead of time, especially with a little understanding of how to use pro tools. Cool idea turning the pitch from the spoon to cup into a beat.
it's just a generic pop song with layers of some basic chords in it. It's a formula that's been done so many times that one can probably replicate in a few minutes. The fact that it's a cup sound is also irrelevant because he basically just used the keyboard to get various pitches.
What would've been amazing is if he tapped the cup at various parts, with some unique rhythm, to create a beat. This is nothing different than creating a generic pop song with a keyboard.

Nothing there was difficult; he listened, he sampled, he looped and then he completed. What makes the talent aspect is that he heard the finished product before he looped, that's what musicians do, so I also don't believe he was amazed.

Its fake thats why - if you listen carefully to the first melody, its completely different melody. The high pitch note is a slightly more constant rhythm to the one he did; and the kick drum lined up perfectly without adjustment. Its pre planned to make it look easy. He may have done it, just not there and then.

👍🏻 These session bands on TV shows are all super legit top notch musicians. They’re the real deals.
They were because the whole thing was set up before. You can see Charlie does not play on record all the chords and bass notes from the loop (and there is no camera cut during the sequence), which means it was composed before, and so The Roots could definitively listen to the track before.
Even if it's not full improvisation, it's still a fantastic performance from Charlie and The Roots is still a great band.
@@StuckLogo thought I was going mad as I noticed an extra note lol. On the first layer he plays, there is an extra note right before it loops that he definitely did not do, you can see his hand movements. Still very cool to watch though. Love the roots also.

I remember watching this guy playing around at his home on his channel 10/15 years ago. He did Philip Defranco's theme tune to his youtube channel in those early days of KRplus. I knew he was super talented but had no idea how big he will become. Well deserved.
For some reason I dont know why I always get happy by the time Charlie completes the tune, there is something magical the way he creates the tune from basics.
Pay close attention and you'll notice that the beat wasn't actually made in real time. When he pretends to record the bass line, there's a part he didn't play live but in the beat you can hear it. All of this was pre-made and rehearsed, it wasn't actually made live.

I'm not doubting Charlie's talent. However, listening carefully, it seems that there was already a previous recording of the music he presents. There is a slight difference between the bassline he records and the one that plays after recording! It starts on a minor chord and then goes back to the same chord. But, after recording, before going back to the initial minor chord, it goes through a major chord (dominant). I don't have a guitar here at the moment to say exactly what the chords are.

He likely just had the midi and instruments ready, played on the armed tracks and turned on the saved tracks when it was time. It doesn't matter anyway, we all know he can do it. It's a remake of his song "Loser". For the show though, it's a cool bit.
