About the AFI Life Achievement Award:
The highest honor given for a career in film, the AFI Life Achievement Award was established by the AFI Board of Trustees in 1973. Denzel Washington will receive the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award, celebrating his life and work. The special will air on TNT on Thursday, June 20, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, followed by an encore at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT. Sister network Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will also air the special in September, during a night of programming dedicated to Washington's work.

I've met him too by happenstance. I was working in an area of Hollywood when I saw a bunch of people waiting outside a restaurant, pretty common scene in LA and I was going to keep walking when I heard people shouting his name. I turned around to and jogged back to see him but he was half way in the van and he saw me running. I was bummed out and felt deflated. I turned around and kept walking to my destination when I heard a honk. I looked and the van had pulled up and he rolled down his window and asked if I wanted a picture. He did that for a nobody. I was so touched by his kindness and I still think of that day. I politely declined as a picture would ruin what that moment meant to me

All but DiNiro (Brando’s Academy Award absense comes to mind) were smart enough to pretty much stay out of politics

I’m a white boy, military brat who moved a lot..and I always found solace in watching Mr Washington perform in his movies...I moved so much and was always meeting and making new friends, but no matter how hard it got I always knew I could watch a Denzel movie and see someone who was honest, the best at his craft and had more integrity on and off screen then anyone I’d ever seen..he’s was an inspiration and a rock then, and things have not changed since...nobody is more deserving of this reward

In ‘The Pelican Brief’ they were supposed to act as they were falling in love. The idea was that it would have appealed more to the female public and please a much bigger crowd,
but Denzel didn’t agree because he stated that the love story would have then stolen the place of the great dramatic and thrilling plot around which this great movie evolves.
He wanted the movie to be committed to the mood of the thriller and wouldn’t let anything come between that goal and his performance.
Not even the director choice.
Now THAT’S a Great Actor.

What makes this nation interesting to me is that it can bring some one like Denzel into this stage and into the world and show what this society is capable of at its best. Denzel was graduating form Fordham Univ in the Bronx when I was struggling as foreign student in Manhattan trying to send myself to college when the college dean told me he had a sinking feeling I would not make it through engineering school. Now some more than four decades later he gets much deserved accolades and me unpredicted engineering carereer. Such is life. You got to live life.
