Titanic Kingman blast over Waveland Avenue

  • This is the 3rd, and longest, blast hit by Dave Kingman in the 23-22 game against the Phillies played on 5/17/79. The ball lands 3 houses deep on Waveland. The call is just great as announcer is in complete awe (as he should be). Enjoy.

The ball did NOT land on Waveland Avenue as is erroneously reported in the description above. Rather, it carried over Waveland and traveled northward down Kenmore Avenue. Kenmore is a north-south oriented street that butts up against the northern (left field) wall of Wrigley Field. So, Kingman's ball landed on the front stairway of the house at 3709 N. Kenmore Avenue. It was an absolutely prodigious blast that I remember watching live on WGN-TV Channel 9 when I was a boy. The whole experience is made even better by the wonderful play-by-play call from the late, great Lou Boudreau .

That home run has some crazy estimates on its distance. Some say it was over 600 feet. Some say 570. From what I understand, the most recent "official" distance is 530. Whatever the true distance is, it is one of the longest home runs ever hit in MLB.

It hit the porch the guy runs out onto. (4th house on the 5th lot up Kenmore) (some will say the 5th house - however it sits so far back of Kenmore to be seen.) Lou corrects himself on the replay "Went beyond the white house". Given the 3rd house is in the 530 range, a 40 ft. vacant frontage lot which still exists today, then a few feet into front yard "if the porch wasn't there" gives you a reading of 575 FT. plus/minus 5 ft. NO LESS THAN 570 FT. / NO GREATER THAN 580 FT. He's hit balls further than that thoughout his major/minor league career. Heck he's credited with a 500 footer in H.S.

It was 1970, after he signed with SF out of USC. Hit 15 HRs that year in Amarillo. For some reason one of my younger brothers moved to Amarillo in the 1980s. I visited him last year for a few days, and I have to say that I was definitely not impressed with the city. Maybe it has something to do with it being in Texas. Land of morons like Rick Perry, Greg Abbott, Ken Paxson, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn. Sally Yates wiped the floor with Ted and John during Senate hearings about a year ago. What a couple of lightweights!

Not at Wrigley. There have been some serious jacks over Waveland but nothing like this one. 3 were close. Glen alien Hill hit one on the roof of the building down the line across Waveland, Sosa hit one against the Brewers that went close to where Kingman's landed, and so did Aramis Ramirez. Still all were 30 feet short of this one.

I remember an announcer one day on air said Carlos Zambarano hit one that nearly hit the center field scoreboard one day in batting practice -which is insane. Also, not in a game. Few people realized it because he was a pitcher, but Psycho Z was one of the strongest players in baseball and could drop serious bombs.

I don't understand the fascination with Kingman. Lots of players hit balls onto Waveland Avenue. He holds no homerun records. He was traded all over the place. And he struck out most of the time.

Growing up in the Bay Area, I loved watching the A's. Although Kingman's batting average wasn't too impressive, I would always anticipate one of those monumental blasts every time he stepped up to the plate. He rarely disappointed.

  • @electriceyeslide5959

Kingman was such a big lanky goon ball. 6’6” and feast or famine. He would either pound the ball into the seats or strikeout. Classic.
Kingman is a good guy though and probably laughs when he watches this.

I'm afraid you're wrong, Johnny Petraglia. Boudreau was a fine color man on both the radio and TV broadcasts. He used to take his turn doing the play-by-play from Vince Lloyd on WGN radio and from Jack Brickhouse on WGN television because that's just the way it was done in those days. And Daniel Linehan is correct: Boudreau, a native of Chicago, was a fan favorite for more than 25 years in The Windy City. Many people forget that he and Vince Lloyd used to call Big Ten football games on WGN radio. They also forget that Boudreau provided color commentary for Chicago Bulls games on TV for for a number of years as well as color commentary along side the great Lloyd Pettit on the radio for Chicago Blackhawks hockey games. In fact Lou was in the broadcast booth on that night in March of 1966 when Blackhawks star Bobby Hull became the first person in the NHL to score more that 50 goals in a single season.
