    I am 72 years old. This was my youth. A woman of 27 years in the thick of things in San Francisco and Berkeley and loving Life and Traffic. Very special time in the world. The music was powerful. We were not dancing; we swayed to this atmosphere of Being. Thank you for sharing this special concert.

    In 1972 I saw Traffic perform this song, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, in San Francisco at Winterland. The band came on the stage in complete darkness. Sounds started coming out in unrelated ways, almost like when an orchestra is tuning up before they play. The sounds slowly morphed into this song. It took minutes before I even recognized it. It was something I have never heard or seen since. I was mesmerized at how the band could take such seeming unrelated notes from a variety of instruments and slowly bring the song into focus. It was like seeing some thing in a fog and slowly your eyes focus and then truly identify what you are seeing. These guys were truly genius in their ability to express themselves in their music. I miss that creativity.

    • @markmelvin299
      @markmelvin299 년 전 +2

      Wow Michael. What a great review and experience! I feel precisely the same. Whenever I feel a bit down I turn to these guys and just sit back. The groove they hit is just sensational. Time after time. SW's band now is terrific but really when you listen to the old days, it is Chris Wood's understated playing that elevate the band's music. Better stop now, I'm getting off the rails. Not good for a grey hair of my age!! First saw SW in Spencer Davis, cannot remember what year. Mesmerising. I'm actually pretty glad there wasn't a 2nd Blind Faith album so he could reform Traffic with Rick Grech who I think gave them what they missed at times, a full time bass player. Seemed like they'd run out of ideas half way through side 2 of that album!! Cheers all.

      @@markmelvin299 nice to hear about your appreciation for their music. As a mediocre guitar player, I can at least appreciate creative music and understand the talent it takes to play it. Was fortunate to attend University from 1970 to 1974 in the SF Bay Area as so many great bands came through to perform and some also began their journey there. There were small clubs that provided an intimacy with the musicians. Great times.

    When i was hitchhiking around Europe, while in England I saw a poster advertising Traffic at Croydon Hall. It was around 3 in the afternoon when i got there and the box office was closed. I went around the left side of the Hall, saw a door, opened it and walked in. Traffic was setting up for the show, their first since Low Spark came out. Their girl friends/wives were all setting in the front row talking, i just quietly sat behind them and watched/listened while Traffic went through their entire set. when it was over i just walked around in side the Hall, and then got to watch them again for the show. the strange thing was that the practice was so much better than the show, they were just so loose and not worried about the playing. it was a true gift to be there.
    Thanks for posting this Wayne, so cool to see it a third time, same set, WOW!! They all look so young back then, but so did I!

The third and final Traffic concert that I attended was at the Flynn in Burlington, Vermont about 1990. Traffic will always be my all time favorite musical group with Dave Mason being a close second. I was fortunate to see Dave Mason in Barre, Vermont a few years ago. I even got to meet him and chat briefly.

    I was 13 in '72. I had this avocado green GE AM clock radio that I loved. It was window to the world. Music, baseball games, Top 40 rock n roll. Then I got a paper route. 82 papers. Sunday was murder and I would have to make at least two trips to carry all the huge Sunday papers. I got my first check of a whopping 49 dollars. I bought a stereo record player that has an FM radio in it too. Lifechanging moment. No more Osmonds, Jackson 5, and Casey Kasem for this kid. I had to have real rock n roll. Album cuts. The longer the cut, the better.

      17 also in '72, and a fan of the music of my youth and young adulthood. Kinda lost track of Traffic early on- familiar with the song 'Mr. Fantasy', but not the album. Again, their work through Barleycorn was not familiar to me for the most part, and my research years ago, that the album Barleycorn charted so high (#5) here kinda blew my mind. Their FM defining song "Low Step Of High Heeled Boys', brought them into my orbit though, and on into Winwood highly successful releases in the late 80's. Saw him once live, and that was in '88.

Chris Wood-tenor sax, flute, electric piano and Jim Capaldi out front singing and percussion, sometimes drumming(there was a second set on stage). Jim Gordon - drums, Rick Gretch on bass, Rebop on
    congas, etc. They performed almost all of JOHN BARLCORN and LOW SPARK, still weeks away from release. Their encore was the WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN arrangement of "Gimme Some Lovin'".

Tom rolled joints and we inhaled them from Orange County up to Santa Monica. Low Spark playing on an 8 track in some old jalopy Robert’s dad had bought him. Santa Monica was a small civic auditorium and was one of those great places where it was in the Goldilocks Zone. Not to big but not two small. I was fairly high when we arrived, so I’m guessing it was general seating with the floor open with no chairs. Yes we were at this show. I don’t remember a film crew. Saw him again in the mid-eighties at the Hammersmith Odeon. His guitar gleamed - it was such a trip. Rock on Winwod. There's no musicians on the rock scene anymore.
