RUIN - An animated short set in a post-apocalyptic universe. It's only a tiny sliver of a much larger story. Thankfully, it's now set up at 20th Century Fox to become a full length feature. Check out our new Facebook Fan Page at / ruinfilm

After hearing Wes Ball has been chosen to direct The Legend of Zelda live action movie, I decided to check out some of his work. I'm about halfway through watching the first Maze Runner and then I found this. I was a little bit worried about the Zelda movie, even though I loved how the Mario movie turned out. Zelda requires someone who can delicately deliver an exciting sense of action and adventure wrapped in up in uncompromising pathos. After seeing his work it's obvious to me that Wes Ball is the perfect man to bring the world of Hyrule to life. I'm really looking forward to it.
I only checked the cancelled project "Mouse Guard" yet but i can already tell that Wes is definitely a great choice as this demo has a very similar vibe to Zelda and given the twitter post he made 13 years ago he seems to be a Zelda fan too. So this man seems to be a perfect choice actually! So stoked for how things are developing!
Don't dwell on things from the past, don't stress on your future. Just live your life, because you only get one. Do whatever makes you happy, not what other people want from you. I have no idea why but, I really love this kind of advanced post-apocalyptic environmental regrownth while still being able to make out the basic structure of the city. Am I the only one?
Nah Keven Klayne, this concept is used extensively in post apocalyptic sci fi. Seems to connect with a lot of people, I guess because it highlights that mankind's seemingly unquestionable control of earth and the environment could very well be temporary.
Upon finding out that Wes Ball is going to direct the live action of The Legend of Zelda, I decided to watch this short film Ruin, Maze Runner 1 (which is a masterpiece, the two are meh but cool) and it shows that he does an excellent job also in the visual effects and I am super eager to see his next work "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" 🐒🐵💙
The animation is incredible. Perfect for a video game, or to bring it to Hollywood to make it fully realistic with real actors and become a movie. Very good job.
That was awesome. Beautiful set designs and a lot of action. Good job on the detailing. Bugs, weeds, shadows, reflections. Even as the hero passed through the environments rather quickly, it didn't seem degraded but very rich. I liked it.
*I remember a 2 bit company called Pixar who used to make short movies like this as a demonstration of their production and graphic capabilities.* *They are now owned by Disney and worth 800 million dollars.* *I guess the moral to this little story is if you have a great idea - run with it.*
They had charm and some kind of narrative that drew you in at least. Not just ambiguous and disjointed pseudo sci-fi/action tropes and elements jammed together. This looks like an E3 teaser for some game that will never reach the end of development.
Dylan Jordan I'm aware and that was probably a smart decision on their part considering there was a story for maze runner and this is just eye candy and poor eye candy at that. Where could you go with something like this that hasn't been done before? it's like terminator meets deus ex.
It's not about the fucking story. It's about the animation. It's just a test and/or practice. There doesn't need to be a story. It's just amazing animation for a non Hollywood related person.
Dulkidul Makdulsup He knows what he can and cannot do. An explosion is really hard to make convincing looking. I'd rather have it cut out than look bad and ruin the immersion.
Dulkidul Makdulsup Honestly the way he did it fit the video perfectly, at least the chopper's "death" scene. The fade to black still gives a climactic feeling, you don't need explosions and loud noises for it to be a climax, I mean unless you're Michael Bay! What Wes Ball could have done better was to have the hero walk or stumble out of the wreckage or simply from out of view, continuing the sense of "did he live?" Cutting back to the hero standing up unscathed cut short what the fade to black moment started, and THAT'S what made it feel anticlimactic, not the lack of explosions.
Please make s sequel to this masterpiece please, your short is brilliant and I would love to see more!! I wish you the best in your future endeavors!!!
Ruin is one of the best film shorts I’ve watched! It’s a shame the live action feature film was cancelled by 20th Century Fox but I hope another company shines a spotlight for it to become a full movie, live action or animated, I want it to see it happen.
This could be the premise for a whole series! In the beginning shots the thing that came to mind was, “What if this is a world in which all non immunes have died and nature took over?” Very, very well done!
Ball got his start as a Hollywood filmmaker with an animated short named Ruin, which executives at 20th Century Fox saw and offered him the job to direct the adaptation to The Maze Runner. The Maze Runner would be Ball's first feature film. Made on a budget of $34 million, the film pulled in $348 million in box office receipts.
wow that's impressive to say the least, I think this here though needs a revisit and a proper longer movie to come for sure and if not that then definately some sort of game adaption cause this looks really good, I didn't know anything about this and I'm only here after watching The Maze Runner and for some reason I decided to look up the director and then find Mouse Guard which ridiculously has been scrapped by Disney
Very good. You usually don't see post-Apoc ruins like these with trees, vines, brush and moss growing over ruined cities. I liked in the end that even the aircraft that was chasing him was rusted and showing wear.
my teacher showed me this video and we had to write a detailed story full of description and speech, this 1 was my best 1 and my fav one, also whoever helped make this short film is creative, not many films have so much shrubbery and greenery and sorts

To all you people saying "Idk know why so many of you are amazed" why don't you make something better since it's so underwhelming? I'm surprised at how easily people can criticize one another without thought or reasoning. Who ever made this went through a lot of trouble and regardless of whether or not you find the post apocalyptic theme to be trash they still work in their own unique grooves into the concept. If it's so easy how about you do it then?
Just because you can't yourself make something better, doesn't at all mean you can't critique something. Take that bullshit logic elsewhere. I liked it but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I never once said that nobody is entitled to their own opinion and by that logic that means that I don't have to take my "bs logic" anywhere. I'm fine with people's opinions I simply don't like it when people constantly say "This wasn't original enough" or "This theme is overused". If someone doesn't like a product based off of legit reasons that's fine but basing it of originality is like eating an apple and then refusing to eat banana because they're both fruit. Sure they originate in the same group but they have many differences (such as the numerous post apocalyptic based films that have appeared).
@tinwoods the Mt01 is too heavy and takes too much fuel for an apocalyptic world, but its a freaking extreme design and fits pretty well in this short. I would have kept the original engine sound, but I am pretty sure the sound designer could not find the sound from this bike.
