    Loved this. I remember growing up watching shows like South Park and The Simpsons, waiting to inevitably outgrow these cartoons, but the older I got the more I found to love. It's strange how disarming they can be, they present themselves as silly little shows but end up getting at deeper truths than even 60 Minutes. I think it's why those two in particular have been on the air for so long, whenever we feel lost looking around at our current society we can always turn to these shows for guidance in the face of real world absurdity. Great video Will, your channel may very well be my favorite on all of KRplus.

    • @schodes
      @schodes  6 년 전 +6

      My man!! I agree. South Park has lasted the longest (partly because it's been running so long) for me. I remember watching it in third grade with my friends and we'd all crack jokes with each other.
      In the face of an absurd world, sometimes the best way to see clearly is by watching absurd shows.
      Thanks for the comment -- to hear that my channel is up near the top for you is flattering and I really appreciate that.

    I think satire runs a severe risk of nihilism, but not all satire is inherently nihilistic. It really depends on whether or not something shines through after all the layers have been peeled away by critical and comedic analysis. If you have nothing left, then the satire was nothing but nihilism.
    A show like The Simpsons has a heart beating underneath. You've ultimately got a loving family despite its dysfunction. It's a theme that comes again and again throughout the series, even in its decline. The same is true for its spiritual successor Futurama, and for other satires like Bojack Horseman or King of the Hill.
    Many, less nuanced satires rarely or never offer hope in the center of it all. South Park teeters on the edge of nihilism here because of its unwillingness to get involved with anything. As said in the video, the characters are almost always on the sidelines between two extremes, leaving the characters and the viewer watching helplessly as everyone who actually has values makes the world worse for it. Family Guy and its spin-offs are similar. They don't really have a lot to say, and when they do say something, it has little nuance. I think using satire as a blunt instrument rather than a precision tool results in a lot of collateral damage and you end up threatened with the possibility of having smashed all meaning away for a punchline.
    Then you have something like Bojack Horseman, which pulls no punches because it's stripping away all the layers of the world that aren't important to reveal the fragile and heartbreaking beauty underneath. That's the whole point of it; like with all good satire.

    Satire rarely works in a live action adult environment because, it's so much more restricted limiting the things you can parody/joke about.
    Animated shows with children allow for commentary on controversial subjects without the viewer choosing to stop watching because it goes against their beliefs. (Nobody takes children and cartoons as seriously).

    Hey Will, I want to get into making video essays. But right now my plan to write one consists of watching your videos and getting pissed off because I'm not that good yet. Any hints on how to start out?

    • @schodes
      @schodes  6 년 전 +1

      Hey Adam, thanks for the nice comment! In terms of creating video essays, getting over the initial hump is the hardest part. It is a very involved medium, as I’m sure you’ve already discovered.
      It’s cliche advice, but it’s just a fact: the only way to get good is to sit down and get grinding on it. Don’t worry if you can’t meet certain quality standards immediately. You’ll get better. That’s what KRplus is all about. People will connect with you and watch as you get better. They like that! They want to see you improve as a writer, speaker, and editor.
      My way is by no means the best way, but I'll tell you what I do for visual planning. Two things mainly: 1. I'll read and re-read a paragraph and let my mind visualize it. 2. Then ask, does that visualization A. actually work with the script?, B. seem aesthetically pleasing? and C. flow with the rest of the video? If the visualization passes through all the filters, then I figure out how it can be put into an editing program. If it is outside my editing/photoshop abilities, I'll take the extra time to teach myself how to do it. I always think it's worth it (KRplus Tutorials are really great for this). I don't storyboard because the editing process is truly a process, and mapping it out would make it too absolute. The editing part is the creative part.
      Again, my advice to upstart video essayists is always just to start making the thing. Once you begin to learn the language of editing, you’ll be able to point out in professional videos how someone did something. Go through the backlog of your favorite video essayists and ask yourself how they did all the editing stuff. It will take time, but you’ll figure it out, and eventually, it will become second nature.
      For now, don’t measure yourself against others. Just try to wake up everyday having gotten better and keep beating your best work. If you have any other questions, shoot me an email: willschoder@gmail.com.
      Oh, and most importantly, choose topics that you love! The audience won’t care if you don’t.
      Good luck, Adam!!!

    In defence of the fence, while you're sat on it you can see both sides. Are adult cartoons causing this or do we watch them because they reflect what we're already feeling? That there must be more nuance than one or the other... nice video, thx m8 x

      Thanks Ralph, great comment. I think satire tends to reflect rather than inform, but if it's done really well, it can change, rather than reinforce, your mind.

    Apart from South Park, one of the few adult cartoons being singled out here that I'm still into is American Dad. So underrated and deserves better.

    Wonderful! You really hit an interesting point with this one. Furthermore, I think those cartoons can falter when they can't find the nuance anymore. The Simpsons loses its bite when it BECOMES the mainstream. South Park becomes a immature stumping post when it advocates TOO much for one particular idea.

      IMO (and hopefully at least a few other people's O's), BoJack is already on the verge of becoming the latter. It seems to have a three-dimensional and nuanced take on everything but politics, assuming that either anyone watching is either already more on the left than the right and will appreciate knowing that a show can advocate "the truth" in such a manner or, if not assuming that, that audience members can be "taught" by seeing characters they like in these kinds of situations. Maybe it's just a blind spot Bob-Waksberg and some of the rest of the writers have as a result of growing up a certain way, but given his desire to make the show even more political than before in Season 5 as a result of celebrity satire feeling tedious in the current political climate, they really should start showing people like Tom Jumbo-Grumbo (Keith Olbermann's Beluga whale news broadcaster), Hank Hippopopalus, and Ritchie "Goober" Osborne the same way they show BoJack- as people/whales/hippos with relatable desires that were also victims of certain circumstances, but make it clear that it still doesn't make the bad things they do OK. While there are people who will support BoJack Horseman (the show) no matter what it does (the television critics at IndieWire, Vulture, and The A.V. Club come to mind), if the BoJack crew doesn't start to follow their own advice and start to handle politics in a less absolutist manner, it could cause the show to be ungraciously cancelled as a result of very low ratings and not eventually end on Bob-Waksberg's terms with a beautiful series finale as I think that, in spite of my issues with the show, feel it deserves.
      Depending on your perspective of the issues and discussions that have spun out of the so-called toxic fandom, McDonald's Szechuan Sauce debacle, and the crew's handling of such things, one or both of the issues you mentioned Simpsons and South Park sometimes having already applies to Rick and Morty. I think that one of the things that Dan Harmon and some of the rest of the cast and crew are going to try to do for Season 4 is to try and "detoxify" it, meaning make it the kind of show that the would-be "Junior Ricks" of the world wouldn't like and couldn't use to create justification for mean and antisocial antipathy. However, this might have the unintentional side effect of giving it the problems I mentioned with BoJack. While Rick and Morty usually cuts itself down with a snide comment from Rick or someone else when it seems to be on the verge of becoming preachy, BoJack very much wants you to hear the author tracts that seem like they should be on an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher rather than an episode of a serialized dramedy. Even though it might be easier to tell when R&M is being sincere if they had this approach, it could also allow for some more blind spots to come into the writing. Honestly, while I think that BoJack is better in terms of objective quality and overall production, R&M is a more rewarding show to watch because I know that it's made by humble people that are able to admit where their show might go wrong and are more equal-opportunity offenders (yes, I know that some politically left-wing websites use "equal-oppurtunity offender" as a synonym for "bigot", but that's an issue I'm about to come right back to), meaning that while Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are willing to call out all forms of radicalism, on the right, left, and center, Dan by going on an "epic rant" in an episode of Harmontown and Justin by mocking them in a silly voice, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Lisa Hanawalt, Adam Conover, Joanna Calo, Kelly Galuska, and Nick Adams are only willing to call it out when it's a radical form of a belief they already disagree with, and might not recognize a radical left-wing belief as such. They may handle things more quietly than Dan and Justin, but their tendency to cater to one point of view so strongly becomes pretty glaring, especially when you always hear Bob-Waksberg talk about how proud he is of the show and wanting every episode to be someone's favorite. In this respect, being an equal-oppurtunity offender makes you less bigoted, not more. Hopefully, R&M can stay a show that no member of any one ideology or background can get TOO mad at for more than a little while, even when going through "detoxification" in order to cut loose as many toxic fans as possible, and that it can be better than ever when it returns in presumably late summer 2019.

      Henners Yea I agree. I think comedians (of the Carlin ilk) tend to be disillusioned idealists, so that may have slipped in there > distrust. I'm sure you have any number of people in either camp. I've even floated between them. Thanks for the comment and the kind words!

    Between the two of them, South Park in my opinion is more successful as an animated satire and plays shock humour just right while Family Guy comes off as too heavy handed and offensive.

    Almost upvoted this video until John Oliver was shown during the "satire at its best" bit. Seriously? The entire premise of his show is that a whiny British guy whines and the audience is an echo-chamber so they cheer. Oliver is satire at its worst, satire on accident.
