      @Puss in Boots Dude, Arthurian romance is absolutely no stranger to non-whites. See: Moriaen. Slaves of Mediterranean ethnicities were frequently brought to Great Britain by Vikings during the Danelaw, a time preceding the compilation of most Arthurian romances by a few centuries. Hell, Moorish and Nubian/Ethiopian troops in Roman legions were stationed as far afield as Hadrian’s wall in the Imperial period. Both “Saracens” and “Moors” are featured in Arthurian romances. Gawain is even assisted by a “Turk” on his journey, where the “Turkish” designation was contemporary (12th-15th century) paving-over of the original Celtic identity that Gawain’s story was based on demonstrating that the Saxons realistically viewed Celtic culture as just as foreign and otherworldly as “Moorish” or “Saracen” cultures. There’s no brown-washing, man, only modern racial understandings attempting to be imposed on a wildly different past.

      @LoryskaEntertainment 2 년 전 +36

      @Puss in Boots Lol you’re acting like darker skinned people didn’t live in Wales when the legend was written. Also fun fact: it’s an adaptation of a fictional story. Gawain can look like anything you want. I thought Patel did a wonderful Gawain. Reducing it to “brown washing” is so intellectually vacuous, it gave me an aneurysm.

    • @LoryskaEntertainment
      @LoryskaEntertainment 2 년 전 +28

      @Puss in Boots He wasn’t. Because he didn’t exist lol. And the tiny detail that Gawain was never given a physical description in the story, yet you assume he was white. Not saying he was non-white, but it’s not “brown washing” to make him so. It’s just an interpretation of a fictional character that was given no description beyond being chivalrous and humble.

    I went into the Green Knight blind, and I appreciated it for what it was. It was basically a 2hr movie to show one man's journey to figure out that to be your best self, you should do as you say and not deceive people (this includes acting selfless for the sake of acting selfless, and not for what can be gained from it) . Most of the movie is just a test of this central narrative, culminating at the end, when the character can see his future depending on what type of person he choses to be, and makes his ultimate decision of who he is.
    The only thing I didn't understand, was why the lord of the castle kissed him, so I looked up the original story, and it made more sense. The entire plot at the castle could have been rewritten a bit better to get this point across, imo, but it is a minor gripe.

      A bit more specifically, the film is about facing death with dignity. Our protagonist knows that if he fulfils his honorable duty, his head will be cut off, so the rest of the film is ridden with anxiety over that looming encounter. I enjoyed it, but I see where the 6/10 review is coming from.
      And yeah, I had the exact same experience with regards to the kiss moment you're referring to.

      They seemed to be hinting pretty heavily that Castle Guy was gay, and despite his friendly demeanor was living in a loveless house where he and his wife never felt much love for the other, hence the wife wanting to sleep with Gawain.
      Castle Guy was at peace with this, but wanted Gawain to return what he had been given, i.e. sexual gratification like what Gawain got from his wife, but despite the kiss Gawain refuses.
      It forces him to confront his lack of honor not just to his own love, but to the guy that just gave him everything and asked for only one thing in return. It also helps run parallel with the vision at the end where he too winds up marrying someone for the sake of it, living the rest of his days in a loveless house before dying alone.

    Green Knight has two very consistent themes. The possibilities of retelling a story, and desiring the prestige and respect of great accomplishments while doing little. Green Knight is an Arthurian legend, and the film is very self consciously an adaptation of that legend. Part of this self acknowledgement are the frequent hints at what could happen if this tale were told slightly differently. In Arthurian legend, Sir Gawain is the noblest, truest hearted knight. In Green Knight he is just a pampered noble, not even a knight. Gawain could have died of starvation hog tied. He could have turned back and simply said he knelt before the Green Knight. He could be failure of a King. The sequence of King Gawain encapsulates the theme of what could be, as well as empty prestige. Gawain wanted to be a knight, but he certainly wasn't volunteering for any battles. He wanted to go on his quest, but his magic belt undermines the bravery of doing so. He wants to be perceived as a noble, but gives little help to the battlefield "orphan" and fools around with the strange Lady while lying to her husband. The final scene is a culmination of these two themes. In the legend, Gawain leaves his magic belt on, and everything turns out okay despite him not really following the rules he agreed to. In Green Knight, Gawain realizes his empty aspirations and takes his belt off. In the legend, the Green Knight perceives Gawain as truly noble because he regrets his missteps, and only nicks Gawain. Green Knight ends with the possibility of what will happen to Gawain. Personally, I think this time the Green Knight chops his fucking head off.

    • @boxing388
      @boxing388 2 년 전 +6

      Also Gawain returns with the green belt around his wounded neck to symbolize his repentance of his flaw. His only flaw in the tale was that he clung to self preservation at the last minute. He was as noble as any knight could have hoped to be, but he was not perfect, and was upfront about that fact in his return home. The original tale is one of hope towards the human race, modern perceptive tends to much more pessimistic regarding the human spirt.

    • @vanyadolly
      @vanyadolly 2 년 전 +18

      I'm completely surprised by the interpretation that he'd get his head chopped off at the end. The green knight mirrors Arthur and congratulates him at the end of a quest that Arthur and his mother sent him on to test his character. They even make a point of showing us his mother conjuring or summoning the knight in the beginning. I thought the biggest change from the original was Arthur's character and legacy is given such a central point in this interpretation. Arthur wants an heir. What would the point be of sending him on a quest just to chop his head off?

    • @Staenhus
      @Staenhus 년 전 +4

      I just watched the film and personally dislike this version. I really liked the original legend, because it was a tale where Gawain tried really hard to be the best knight he could, but in the end was afraid and sought to save himself. Despite that, he is not blamed for this, he's not cast out or dishonored; instead it is accepted as a human trait, and the lesson he has to learn in the end is more about honesty than bravery. In comparison, the film really emphasises his ineptitude and cowardice, framing it as a truly despicable trait and one worthy of scorn. Only by "manning up" can he be redeemed for his unworthy character. It's a questionable message at best and somehow more conservative than a legend from the 14th century. Maybe there's a different interpretation that makes it better, but I really had a hard time connecting to it.

Considering that everything he needed for the quest was provided for him and it was supposed to be a straight shot directly to the chapel. Gawain is pretty much painted as being a peasant before his journey starts, he was bumming places to stay at whatever that community house was with the prostitute. King Arthur directly tells us he’s neglected his Gawain for his entire life before the movie starts, and given that he’s the son of a witch I don’t think there’s much evidence to assume he’s of any real status.
      We even later find out that Gawain was entirely right in trying to leave the situation at the battlefield immediately. I personally have no reason to assume anything the “war orphan” said was true, considering how bizarrely he acted from the moment we meet him and how many red flags he gave off. He’s just a highway robber trying to lure in victims to his snare. Are you the type to defend modern day European pickpockets? “They just tried to give this bracelet that they forcefully tied around your wrist without consent and are now demanding compensation for, you owe it to them!” It’s not much of “a kindness” at all, it was a very brief interaction where Gawain was trying to escape being tailed, and asked “just show me how to leave.”
      As for the prostitute, I honestly didn’t even catch mention that that’s what she was for the entire movie. In hindsight it makes sense, but I don’t think it’s conveyed very well. Maybe the audio in the theater I went too was too low, but I honestly thought I heard “sister” mentioned in the scene where he wakes up, so I assumed incest was the taboo he felt guilty for, not prostitution. Regardless, given the historical context of the time neither would’ve really been looked upon as a chivalrous act for a supposed knight to engage in. Sure we the audience knows better now, but it doesn’t really seem fair to the characters to force an external expectation on them that’s absent from their world, but then have the universe treat them as if they did wrong anyways. And class isn’t really the issue there to ascribe to it. They’re both peasants, she’s looked down upon because what she does is seen as sinful, not because he’s better off than her. In fact she’s probably more well off than he is before Arthur randomly decides to take him under his wing that day.
      As for the ghost, I can agree there that way he asked was perhaps rude, but it wasn’t really selfish. He stumbled into a house that he rightfully assessed was abandoned, until she wakes him. He does the polite thing and immediately apologizes and attempts to leave. She is the one who then forces this expectation of completing a quest upon him. At this point, Gawain has never had any adventures, but recognizes that an encounter like this is a typical kind of tale he’d hear from the knights of the round table. We aren’t explicitly told that the events are the same, but given that the opening monologue mentions Excalibur, Gawain might be thinking of a story like Arthur’s encounter with the lady of the lake in which he receives the sword. I feel like him asking “what will you give me in return?” In the scene is more out of naivety than it is a sense of arrogance and Gawain expecting that things will just be handed to him. Gawain has no tales of his own and he desperately wants to be a knight, he assumes this moment will be the event in which something magical happens that gives him purpose. He doesn’t seem to have much reluctance in completing the quest either after she chides him. I feel like the scene was more meant to humble Gawain than it was to burden him with a sense of guilt, and he does seem to be changed by the encounter afterwards.
      I’ve heard people say the giant encounter is selfish because he’s “expecting” free help from them, but that doesn’t really hold water either. Obviously from the very blunt reference to “standing on the shoulders of giants,” it’s what the director intended people to think, but honestly ask yourself why that is? What is the actual context of this scene? He’s hitchhiking, that’s it. I’ve never heard anyone in the real world refer to hitchhiking as a dishonorable or selfish act, and its an opinion that sounds like it would be rooted in the hatred of poor people. Gawain is down on his luck, he’s lost his horse, he’s lost the weapon he’s supposed to return, he’s lost the only item that secures his survival, he has no food, and he’s ostensibly going to be late to his appointment given that the journey was described as six nights in horseback and he lost his horse the first day. He asks them for help. That’s it. Honestly after putting it that way if you still think he was deserving of the situation because he: was a penny pincher to someone who stalked beat and robbed him, had doubts about a relationship, and asked a rude question to a person that may or may not have even existed, I think you’ve drank the movies Kool aid. Gawain seems to me like an honest but flawed young person just trying to find his way in the world, but the entire world is stacked against him. Sure he has lessons he needs to learn, but why is this movie determined to punish him instead of letting him grow as a person? You all realize characters are meant to be flawed, right? Why is he of all people in this world the only one expected to be held accountable? The highway robbers making a quick buck off the exploitation of countless pointless deaths are just fine, hell they’re even painted as justified in what they did because Gawain was “selfish.” Gawain’s mother sending him to his death is completely fine and justified, because she’s just fucking with him. The witch lady who rapes him in the lord’s manor is excused in her acts, because the movie needs us to feel like Gawain failed, even when he held steadfast against all of her prior advances. But her forcing herself upon him while he’s half asleep, afraid of her, and terrified for his life is fine because it’s him giving into temptation. Was the knightly thing for him to keep fucking whores his whole life? What difference does it make that another whore fucked him instead?
      Honestly the amount of people that just blindly eat this shit up because the movie’s framed it for you on a silver platter that the confused young peasant trying to make something of his life and not getting everything perfect on the first try was deserving of death disgusts me.

The story is about his journey throught the kingdom, learning about it as he goes, like learning the lore in a rpg, and in the end learning what it is to have honor. For me, The Green Knight was a profound artistic film experience I haven't really felt since I saw No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and Assassination of Jesse James in close proximity to each other in 2007. The production was flawless, the music, acting, set design and costuming were sublime, and like a lot of my favorite films, I was left somewhat scratching my head by the ending. I never found the story boring in the slightest. This is a 700 year old Middle English poem about knightly virtues. It stands to reason that it's not going to really click and resonate well with modern audiences. The story basically shows how Gawain spectacularly fails every knightly test that is thrown his way on every step of his quest, and at the end, he is given the choice of being a coward and being unfairly rewarded for his cowardice all the way up to the point of becoming the King of England, or accepting his fate and receiving a fair punishment (i.e. dying) for his litany of poor choices. It's a film that asks a lot of its audience (including reading the original poem to understand a lot of what is happening) and I respect the audacity of it all. In an era where film is splitting between $400 million summer Marvel megablockbusters and microbudget online indie films, I really appreciate mid-budget art cinema like The Green Knight more than I ever have. These kind of films satisfy me the most.

    I feel I got more of the story from the Green Knight than that of Ghost story.
    I do get it. Most of the story happens at the start and end and with the somewhat episodic sequences in the middle you do have to reach quite a bit to find meaning in them.
    I also have a fondness for old myth stories and despite this movie clearly having its own voice this is the first adaption of such a story which doesn't somehow seem embarrassed of its source material.

  • @jfm79
    @jfm79 2 년 전 +52

    I think the Green Knight did well adapting the story given how the source material is written. You essentially have to break down Medieval poems like that brick by brick to make sense of the language/slang of the time, know what certain imagery alludes to or what the story is even trying to tell you.
    Medieval poetry and art all the way up to the renaissance is veeeeeery symbolism heavy. You know that old joke about English professors overanalyzing things like the color of an object? It’s actually not them being presumptuous, they really had a symbol for everything. Key point: the color green in Germanic folklore alludes to spring time and nature. Spring time and nature was associated with rebirth and life in general (This isn’t an unfamiliar process even today. We associate green with “envy”. Same concept, but the difference in association changes the tone and theme completely). They pretty much spelled it out in the movie with that green speech at the castle cause it’s kind of necessary for the theme, but that doesn’t happen in the book (at least from what I recall) you just have to have that knowledge before hand. That’s why reading those poems become a citation nightmare cause eeeeeverything has a translation or meaning that hasn’t been in vogue since medieval times.
    This story in particular felt like it was going to be difficult cause the entire plot isn’t fully explained until the last few pages as to what was going on, what the test/game actually was, who the people sir Gawain met actually were, why he ended up inevitably passing the test, although the movie slightly changed the ending.
    *Spoiler* OG Sir Gawain keeps the belt on so he gets a knick on the neck for being just a tiny bit of a bitch in the face of getting his fucking head chopped off lol it’s supposed to be punishment for lying to the lord of the castle he rests at before heading to the knight. The lord is actually the green knight in disguise and the whole “whatever you acquire in my castle, you must give to me as well” was a test. In the original book there was not a scene where sir Gawain awkwardly cums on the lady of the castle, instead he repeatedly politely rejects her. She’s also a test. She’s a “temptress” and she’s testing his chastity. He instead keeps kissing her which I guess is like a work around, which is why he also ends up smooching the lord of the castle. But because the lady of the castle gave him that belt to protect him and he concealed it from the lord this is considered a point against him, hence getting a small wound rather than not getting hit at all or full on getting his head chopped off. The movie version he rips the belt off showing his bravery and while we don’t see the outcome I assume he doesn’t get hit at all given that was him finally revealing the belt. Also, from what I gathered in the movie, they made Morgan le Fay his mother when she’s actually supposed to be his aunt in the book (it’s never stated in the movie, again you’d have to read the book to catch this), but it’s a bit confusing there because the old woman of the castle is supposed to be Morgan le Fay in the original book, which they included. but either way Morgan isn’t explicitly seen or heard of in the entirety of the book till the last few pages where she reveals to be the one who sent the Green Knight to test Sir Gawain (and that’s where the confusion lies since it’s shown in the movie that sir Gawain’s mother sent the knight, so maybe the blind folded old lady is also sir Gawain’s mother in disguise in the context of the movie? Not 100% sure). I assume the dynamic was changed so the story felt more linear and to avoid a cheesy “T’WAS I” reveal at the very end.
    I went into it already having read the book, but it had been years, so I was rusty and decided not to brush up on the story to see how well I could grasp the plot. It was difficult at points trying to recall certain details and the movie definitely doesn’t write it out. I could imagine how confusing or uninteresting it would be to anyone who hasn’t read the book or gives a shit about epic poems from hundreds of years ago lol I really think this was the best outcome as far as an adaptation goes without making it a nightmare of exposition and dialogue. The book is convoluted and so removed from our culture that it would probably devolve into an “all tell, no show” shit show if they tried to be more explanatory.
    I get why you feel the way you do about it, this is a pretty niche area of interest and unless you’ve read the book AND enjoy it, it’s going to be a clunky and confusing watch.

His "adventures" are mostly pointless filler where the expectation would be that he learns something about becoming a knight from each adventure... but he doesn't. It's not until the end when he has that vision that he realizes it's all pointless, and consigns himself to his fate.

  • @ferdinandcountfathom9298

    The Green Knight had a heavy entry-burden; it's one of the reasons why the early commercial tried to quickly teach some Arthurian history to give a background to people who didn't have to read Sir Gawain & the Green Knight in school. I personally am familiar with the story and I'm looking forward to seeing the movie, but I certainly understand how people who are hearing of this tale for the first time would feel a little bit lost. I don't think that any media should require a lot of foreknowledge for appreciation, you should be able to appreciate media on its own, and then if there's some contextual media for a deeper understanding, you can seek it out at your own behest. From what I've seen of the commercials and reviews, I'm not sure whether the green night made its narrative as approachable to those unfamiliar with the tale as it could have. And it's not because it's high-minded British literature, when you first watch a movie like hellboy, if you're unfamiliar with the comic book source material, it's the job of the movie to quickly familiarize you with the characters and plot and setting. I don't think that the burden of explanation should be any different just because the source material is more academic, so perhaps this is an area where the filmmakers dropped the ball. Still very curious to see it however! Great review Adam!

      Yeah I don’t think the filmmaker or the film drops the ball. I wasn’t familiar with the story because I hadn’t read it. I went with my friend who did read it in school. I had no trouble following it or getting the story and yet he was lost and found it boring. I loved the movie. I think it depends on the viewer and also how invested they are in the story. I think if you honestly pay attention to the movie it explains its narrative fine without explicitly spelling it out for you. I think part of the problem is that so many films hold the viewer’s hand that when one doesn’t some don’t know how to do it for themselves.

      @ferdinandcountfathom9298 2 년 전

      @@bayonetababe9697 don't misunderstand me, I think that the movie looks great. I was just suggesting that in terms of wide approachability, that the somewhat academic subject matter, as a bar to entry, might have turned off the potential broader audience that the film could have had.
      I understand that some people are not into swords and sorcery, or historical fiction, even though it's very much my bag, but I've been surprised by showing the preview to some people and having them walk away confused and uninterested in seeing the film, despite the fact that the preview had the exact opposite effect on me: it made me super excited to see the film.
      I'm fairly sure that my experience will be similar to yours and I'll end up loving it, but I think this is often a problem with the adaptation of any source media; it's trying to get people to appreciate a story that they're not familiar with. People who were already familiar with the media: no problem: they're most likely going to love it, unless it strays from The source or has other problems.
      Perhaps the ball dropping that I spoke of had more to do with the advertising? I mean again, I'm not speaking of myself because I found it very compelling, but I know people who were turned off by it, and it's surprised me, because they're people that I generally think of as being intellectual and interested in this sort of thing.
      Anyway, I'm enjoying the discussion!

    Idk if anyone else has posted this yet but there is a distinct purpose to every character and scene in the green knight after he begins his quest and that has to do with the 5 knightly virtues discussed in the original text friendship, generosity, chastity, courtesy, and piety. Each character he meets through the story is a test of these virtues and he fails every one of them.
    The first one in the movie is piety. He spends Christmas in a whore house and his mother is upset that he didn’t go to church. This could be why she created the green knight in the first place. Secondly is generosity, which is represented by the peasant he meets on the battlefield that he only gives one coin. Thirdly Courtesy is represented by the ghost he meets in the cabin. He dismisses her until he realizes he can get something in return for getting her head back. Friendship and chastity are represented when he goes to the hunters house. He obviously fails chastity when he busts a nut on his hand and belt. And he fails on the friendship side when he doesn’t return the belt to the hunter when they meet in the woods. The rest of the movie speaks for itself.

    this helped me understand why the green knight didnt do as well as i thought it might. the movie was very good for me and one of my favorites ever but looking back on it, part of the reason it resonated with me beyond surface level enjoyment was that I read about the arthurian legend behind it right before watching. this meant I understood the thematic significance of each conflict and the final resolution even if they were only able to skim them. the overarching themes are well portrayed but not in a way that would allow someone unfamiliar with the source material to understand both the origin and the adaptation.

    I saw Green Knight and felt pretty similar. I don't know if I'd watch it again, and sitting through it, I was pretty confused by the purpose. However, after thinking about it more, driving home from the theater, I did come up with a symbolic purpose that I really liked. I'm studying English right now, so I have had to read and analyze the original story, which, knowing it, makes this interpretation a little more clear.
    Anyways, in the original Green Knight, the purpose of Gawain's journey is one of honor and sticking to his word. There is a lot of emphasis on his good deeds and his resistance from temptation he faces along the journey. This pays off at the end when the Green Knight recognizes his knightly code and noble nature and spares his life, revealing the quest to be a test. I noticed the movie changed a lot of this, which is what confused me, so then I had to ask why. What did they put emphasis on instead? For one thing, mortality was a huge motif. The scene I think the most about is when Gawain is tied up in the forest and the camera pans around to reveal his skeleton, then he's back to normal. I take this to be a reflection of his thought process because the purpose of Gawain's entire quest is just to die. In the movie's universe, it's established that every knight has a sort of right of passage and will do great things. In Gawain's case, his great accomplishment will be his death, so it's basically following a man whose entire purpose is just to die.
    This also explains the (spoilers btw) montage at the end that shows an alternate reality where he ran from the beheading. He tried to run from death, life sucked, he died anyway. This is why I think Green Knight's purpose was to provide an existentialist narrative and twist a story about an honorable knight whose honesty is tested to focus more on the fact that the entire legend follows his struggles just to reach his death.

      I think a lot of those encounters were showing us that Gawain wasn't exactly the greatest person. He gives money to the guy who gave him directions only after he asks him, he asks what he'll get for helping the girl who had lost her head, he throws rocks at the fox and later yells at him for trying to help him, he sleeps with the wife of the lord despite knowing it's wrong.
      He's not a horrible person, he doesn't actively seek to do bad, but he almost seems to always take the easy way out of situations. At the same time he still thinks that he deserves honor and high status, and naively thinks he'll get all of that from this one journey.
      So only at the very end he finally realizes this, when he's come all this way and there is no honor and glory, but just the green knight with the axe, waiting to chop his head off. Then he finally realizes that maybe this is what he deserves, what's meant to be his journey. He could go back and live a fraudulent life as king, but he'll still eventually get what's coming to him, so he might as well accept that as the kind of person he is - he deserves this kind of simple end to his journey.
      So I would say it's not necessarily pointless, it's kind of a story of redemption, but in a more subtle way than we're used to.
