That long take followed by her walking back and then crying in her husband's arms was phenomenal and a perfect ending for the film, it really got me, I can remember being in the position of the man and having to say goodbye to a close friend who I can't meet again.

As an immigrant, that migrated to the US at a very young age like Nora. It quickly stood out to me that the movie was not necessarily a love story. To me it was about the struggle of Nora with her identity. It's a beautiful film because it can be interpreted as a love story or a story about the struggles with your identity. Loved it!

My interpretation is that Nora chose herself the entire film. It was her decision to cut off contact with Hae Sung when they were 24 years old that led to the situation. They had a chance to be together and see each other then, but she decided that being a writer was more important to her. Then when he shows up 12 year later, she feels conflicted about her decision because her Korean side has been reawakened and she remembers who she was in Korea and realizes she is still Korean at heart. Nora can't be a writer in New York and be with him at the same time because he doesn't belong in New York. He belongs in Korea. When Nora cut off contact, she was basically choosing her writing career over him and put him on her waiting list. Hae Sung may have realized that he was just a backup option by the end of the film and leaves without asking her to be with him in this lifetime. He will probably be able to move on with his life realizing that Nora isn't the same person he remembers anymore, and Nora will be haunted by what could have been. In many ways, she feels stronger about Hae Sung than her husband, but she definitely likes being in New York more than Korea. So she chose to stay in New York for her career and to be with the person that fits in with her chosen life in New York.

What an impressive film. Looks incredible and I wish I can still see it projected in a theater. Kicking myself that I didn’t support it when it was playing.

Isn’t this movie too ‘mature’ for Korean audiences? I was shocked a movie like this ‘came out of Korea’, then discovered the writer and director was Korean Canadian / American. Made a lot more sense.

Every ‘Korean’ Korean movie I’ve seen has had some sort of gimmick. This movie doesn’t.

@@petalchild So Parasite, the gimmick is the people secretly living in the basement. It’s not based on reality. Old boy, the guy is imprisoned for 15 yrs and his jailer schemes to make him sleep with his daughter. REALLY? Don’t even get me started on Squid Game. Just loads and loads of this sort of nonsense in Korean cinema, that makes me roll my eyes. Past lives, given the size of the Korean diaspora, speaks a truth to many people’s lived experience and is firmly rooted in reality.

I loved this movie so much. I became sick during my trip to Los Angeles and had to take a beat by seating instead of working during my return flight. I watched the first 30 minutes before taking the rest and nap that I needed. And watched the last minutes of the movie and I cried at the end as Greta walked back to her husband. Wow, wow, wow that word "In-Yun" those words will never be forgotten. So beautiful portrait as you don't wanna hate her husband or even include him in this relationship and he wasn't even centered but everybody was in pain. She should have won an Emmy or Critics Choice Award well deserved! Beautiful movie and I will definitely watch it again!

This movie was sad. I felt their pain of longing for each other and regrets. I felt Arthur’s pain as well. I have to admit, there were some scenes of stillness that I had to fast forward through.
