RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, op. 30
00:30 I. Allegro ma non tanto
    17:56 II. Intermezzo: Adagio
    28:51 III. Finale: Alla breve
Yunchan Lim launched onto the international music stage when he was 14. He won second prize and the Chopin Special Award in his first-ever competition, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists in 2018. That same year, he stood out as the youngest participant in the Cooper International Competition, where he won the third prize and the audience prize, which provided the opportunity for him to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra. 2019 meant more accolades, when, at the age of 15, he was the youngest to win Korea’s IsangYun International Competition, where he also took home two special prizes.
Now just 18, he has performed across South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. He also participated in the recording of “2020 Young Musicians of Korea,” organized by the Korean Broadcasting System and released that November.
A native of Siheung, Yunchan currently studies at the Korea National University of Arts under Minsoo Sohn. Coming to Fort Worth, he says he is “looking forward to playing in front of the warmest and most passionate audience in the world.”

@@staffanolofsson8201It's been just over a month since this video was uploaded and it has generated nearly six million views, far exceeding that of Horowitz, which had hitherto the highest number of views. Anne-Marie McDermott, one of the jurors of VC Competition this year says "I have played Rachmaninov 3rd. Never again. It now belongs to Yunchan". Cliburn webcast co-host and pianist Elizabeth Joy Roe called it a once-in-a-lifetime performance that left her nearly speechless. Many people who love this piece say this is one of the best renditions of this music. Time is not the only factor that determines whether or not a performance is historical. The greatness of the performance itself determines it. It's only my opinion. Thanks for your reply anyway.

@@ddestiny44 "The entire piano world is about to collectively lose their mind." Ben Laude said it all with this opening statement in his analysis video. The listeners who are not in “competition” with Yunchan were simply in awe, ecstatic, and marveled at Yunchan’s prodigious musicality. But the professionals, notably those who recorded Rach 3 or their live performances posted on KRplus, would be so embarrassed at theirs compared with Yunchan : They know how lousy their plays were and they cannot compete with Yunchan-no matter how hard they try-in million years. Yunchan is simply on another level that they cannot reach. The Rach 3 at Van Cliburn competition was an announcement to the world that the greatest living pianist was just born. Ben Laude and two guests (Van Cliburn jurors) confirmed it with their own words although they didn’t spell it out specifically-they needed to be diplomatic on that kind of statement.

I’ve been a pianist for 60 years, following so many different artists and attending so many concerts around the world. I’ve never heard anything as perfect and emotionally draining as this performance. Even now, after dozens of viewings, I’m still brought to tears. He’s a wonder. I think what makes Yunchan special is how he manages to attack his way into the orchestra. Like 28:28 - notice the exchange from piano to orchestra. He blends in and out very seamlessly that made you think that the orchestra has been playing with him for years. He grabs attention subtly and gives it away just the same. He then proceeds with the iconic theme after the exchange. His plays are never overwhelming even on the strong parts. Such control and balance. His bravura never intimidates but envelopes the listener with a sense of sincerity and ease. Without unnecessary exaggerated ticks. I believe that Yunchan performs not to feed his ego but to play only for the sake of immaculate music making and nothing else. This what makes him stand out from the rest. His humble, grounded, and down to earth approach in music. Thank you Yunchan.

that's correct! When I watched and listened to other rendition of this piece as if there was a chaos of instruments. Without undermining the musicians but it seemed there was a struggle to catch up. I felt it was more of a noise than music. Unlike here that pianist Yunchan and the orchestra sync beautifully! Really love it so I keep comin' back.

    • @najdomingo
      @najdomingo 개월 전 +47

This shows that Yunchan doesn't need to constantly seek for attention. Even when this is a Piano concerto and the piano is supposed to be the main instrument, he is humble enough to give away attention to the instrument that has the main melodic line. He is not afraid to be at the back and be "just" a supporting melody. This way, there is a real dynamics between the instruments in the orchestra. They talk, and it is not just the piano that speaks.

Lim's family is not rich; no one in the family is a musician, and he started playing piano as an after-school activity. The teacher at the music academy he went to was unkind, telling him he was too young to learn piano and sending him back to come back in a year. So he started playing piano a year later, and he noticed that he memorized music faster than other kids. One day, at age 8, he saw an academy for musically gifted children on TV, so he begged his mom to go audition there. There, he saw a metronome for the first time. He was shocked to see other kids playing with pedals. He didn't know how to use the pedals, but he got the audition. From then on, he started to learn the piano properly again. When he was thirteen, he auditioned and met Professor Minsoo Sohn at the Korean Institute for Gifted Children. Perhaps that changed his life: Sohn recognized the boy's talent when the other judges didn't. While attending middle school, he was given the opportunity to take regular lessons from Sohn and continued to receive scholarships given to a select few outstanding students. Sohn never taught him about technique; he simply asked him to create an image in his mind and then express it in music. Before he even graduated from middle school, he won an international piano competition, and people were amazed at this boy who came out of nowhere. The rest is the story you know.

I am sure many prestigious music schools around the world must have offered Yunchan their full scholarship packages just to have him study in their schools. But he chose NEC because he would like to continue his study under his teacher. That says a lot about how much trust and respect Yunchan has for his Prof Sohn.

In the pre-World War I years of Europe, amidst the social and political upheavals of the time, Crimean-Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff's genius did not initially receive the full recognition it deserved in New York, even up until the war's end in 1919. I believe it took pianist Yunchan Lim to truly convey the message Rachmaninoff embedded within his music - a message to humanity that transcended years.
For too long, brilliant pianists focused on the Rach 3's technical virtuosity, overlooking its soul and deeper meaning. Yunchan, however, provided the key to unlocking the world of inner turmoil Rachmaninoff experienced during his composition. He masterfully revealed how beauty the life and world can be and how easily consumed by the darkness of human ambitions that pave the way conflict and devastation.
Yunchan's fingertips brought to life the composer's longing and profound remembrance of his homeland, the war frenzy that gripped the people, and the ultimate societal devastation. With his performance, Rachmaninoff's emotions became tangible, visible, and palpable.
It was a privilege and a joy to witness a young genius and his masterful interpretation of a legendary compposition by another genius. From the depths of our hearts, we extend our gratitude: first to Yunchan Lim (- May Allah always protect him from the evil eye 🧿--) and his family, then to the Korean Society and the State that nurture such talent, a timeless legend for the world stage, and finally to the Cliburn Competition for inspiring and motivating young talents to enrich human civilization.
We eagerly await and hope that we will find the opportunity to witness Yunchan Lim's artistry Türkiye in our lifetime. 🎶

Just listened to Yuja's version with Zubin Mehta, and she certainly is a formidable technician with a lot of feeling in her performance. However, I come back to Yunchan's version and appreciate the clarity of his notes - you can hear them all so distinctly. Then there are his quiet moments - almost meditative - which allow the music not to overpower. There's such a display of contrasts in his performance that this concerto is revealed in all its moods and shadings without strain or the performer's ego. I was not a big fan of Rach 3, but Yunchan changed all that.

Back when I was young when; one of the first times I listened to this work was via a CD from the library (as in the places where you borrowed paper books back then). Upon hearing this "repeat", I actually thought it was the CD skipping in my player because it sounded exactly the same as the start to me - I even went as far as to clean the finger smudges off the CD! The virtuosity he displays and his enormous repertoire (which wasn’t even fully played in the Cliburn) is enough to make any high level pianist envious of this 18 year old. It’s been 100 years since Horowitz’s debut in Europe as an 18-20 year old, and now we have an 18 year old who plays with such precision, accuracy and grandeur, and yet does not rush like most modern super virtuosos.
