Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to an exceptional video about βHow to taxi a Boeing 747 at Hong Kong airportβ.
On one of our recent flights to Hong Kong, my captain and I recorded the long taxi route to our parking stand after landing.
This video focuses primarily on the given clearances by the tower and ground controller. With the animation I hope to explain to you on how to read an airport ground chart and get a better understanding for the given clearances by ATC. I must admit the audio quality of the ATC of this video is better than what you here on LIVE ATC. Please use my video as a reference of ATC sound quality. I read a lot of comments by my followers complaining that they canβt understand the communication between the pilots and air traffic controller listening to LIVE ATC on the internet.
One thing to add, we didnβt start the APU, as we had no temperature sensitive cargo on board, plus Hong Kong ground supplied a ground power unit as they requests to use the APU as little as possible.

Well, if on that day, cargos are landing on 7L/25R, congrats, but if the cargos land on 7R/25L, that means shorter taxi time and HK airport has a LOT of aircraft

For me the hardest part was ATC. They know their airspace and as a noob you often look a fool

@@AndreyPutilov It's not so much hard, but more that you have to do a lot of things at once. Remember where you need to go, figure out where that is, listen to the radio for aircraft that possibly interfere on your route, watching out of the window for other planes and not crashing into them.

I really love to hear accent of Hong Kong tower... It is unique in the world.
I guess you mean the Ground Controller, with the interesting Chinese accent. The Tower was Australian, my home accent. You'd hear a lot of interesting accents flying international flights for a living.
Yeah we pronounce each consonant like they are words of their own and since we mix a lot of English nouns in normal conversations those words are slightly altered in their pronunciation to fit nicely with the rest of the Cantonese language.
As a hongkonger, i think cantonese accent is easy to understand by other english speakers...or is it my bias?

@@lokon1979 You do realize there's still more chance of a collision in an airport, right? Planes are kept PLENTY far away from other planes in the sky, plus have a whole extra dimension in which they can traverse to avoid accidents known as altitude.

Never knew you had to contact the Tower controller to cross the active runway. Now that you mentioned that though, it makes perfect sense.
It's the procedure at all airports.Even vehicles have to be on the same frequency.Lessens the chances of runway incursions.
I think it depends on how busy the airport is at busy airports the tower controller is the person who gives the clearances on runways. The few times I flown out of my home airport with my pilot friend the ground controller has given the clearance to cross what I believe to be active runways.
@@thenormanator9379 I have been in ATC in several airports and GMC issuing runway crossings was ditched some time ago.Runway incursions were the hot topic and this was seen as a potential problem.It doesn't mean that it doesn't happen,but it's a measure that is trying to prevent an accident happening.CLK airport also had the Surface Movement Radar with built in Runway Conflict Alert.

Fascinating. Brings back memories of flying into Kai Tak as a child many years ago. We looked down on 747s from our flat on the hills on their approach. Chep Lap Kok just doesn't have the same terror.
I loved flying into Kai Tak. You could look across to Hong Kong Island and see all the colorful buildings, and then look down and read the signs on the shops right below you.

Sadly they didnβt let you land on 07R which they usually do for Freighter.
Not in the morning I think. North runway for landing and South for take-off in day time. North (or South) runway for both take-off and landing in midnight.

I love you showing all the other planes and where they are going. I used to live in Haikou (Capitol of Hainan island in China) and we would always go to Sanya on the south side of the island probably 3-4 times a year. Seeing that A320 going there took me straight back to my childhood.

I worked in Hactl (the building appeared at 10:15) for a few years and that was a daily scenery to me watching aircrafts come and go at the cargo bays.

Do they stamp your passport every where you go? Seem like you'd need 200 page passport just to get through the year.
they get special visa. just like cabin crew on passenger flight. Search about it.
They have a crew manifest. It's passed along to crews when they leave the plane. The manifest list their names and positions. The immigration check their name when they present their ID

But interesting story though, my mom had been to Hong Kong in the late 90s like 6 times before I was even born. But she have been to Kai Tak 5 times, she said that the approach on Kai Tak was breathtaking and almost a heart-stopping one.
But her 6th visit in Hong Kong in 1999, she said that they landed at the new airport (Chek Lap Kok) and was a lot bigger than Kai Tak.

Captain Joe, how do you know where the centre of the Aircraft is while taxing on the taxi lines?
I think that just comes from Experience
You donβt really know exactly. But with experience on the aircraft type you get a feel for how much to go past the centreline before turning. Sometimes you have to be aware of the exact aircraft type eg on the 777-300 Iβll make a conscious effort to put the nose deeper into the turn than I would on the 777-200.
