    Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel. TodayΒ΄s video will be the beginning of a video series about the amazing supersonic commercial airliner CONCORDE.
    First and most importantly I want to thank the Brooklands museum, the home of British motorsport and aviation, for inviting me to there fantastic site.
    How could I resist in making a video about the airplane that got me all excited about aviation as a little boy?
    I want to thank all volunteers at the Brooklands museum for showing around and providing me with access to all their facilities. Therefore I want to donate all the earnings made with the upcoming series to the volunteers at Brooklands. Without your help and work, this marvel of aviation history would otherwise be consigned to the history books.
    I hope you enjoy this tour around Concorde and make sure to watch the follow up videos to this series.
    Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

I was lucky enough to be taken on a trip to Heathrow and into a hanger where they were servicing a Concorde. I sat in the pilot's seat but was surprised how old a lot of the instrumentation looked. Battleship grey boxes and old looking instruments, well it was designed in the late fifties.

    The only issue was that they were expecting a four year old so had colouring books and pencils ready for me!

    I got to fly on this magnificent plane when I was about 10 - too young to fully appreciate it for what it was, but it still had a colossal & lasting impact on me as a young aviation enthusiast. Absolutely incredible aircraft - huge thrust, and as Capt. Hutchinson said, a proper plane with a proper cockpit...this was back in the days when you were invited up to meet the captain & chat to them & the crew mid-flight. Proper engineering at it's very best before computers took over...makes me proud to be born & bred in Bristol like she was (largely!)
    The journey back to LHR from Toronto was certainly unique as we essentially found ourself running out of fuel due to higher air density over the Atlantic and had to emergency land (in the brace position!) at Shannon because the runway was too short for a typical Concorde landing. We were there for 3 hours - I believe at the time British Airways didn't have a fuel account with Shannon, so the pilot eventually had to fill it up on his credit card! Plus, with no APU on board we were all melting & taking it in turns to stand by the door as we weren't allowed off the plane. Then, because of a problem with the Shannon air pump we couldn't get the plane started...but it eventually fired up, and after a hugely exhilarating full-power, low-fuel take-off, we finally approached LHR at 23:04...4 mins after the cut-off for being able to land Concorde because of the huge noise. So we were diverted to Brize Norton and then bussed back to LHR. I certainly remember that journey - but to be honest, I was just excited to get another take-off & landing on the best aircraft ever built!
    I miss this gorgeous plane.

      Your awesome story took me back to that wonderfully imperfect world of commercial aviation last century. I'm sure your's wasn't a great flight, but what a lasting memory :) Oh how things have changed.. It was common practice for children in particular to be invited to the cockpit mid flight to behold the marvel of all those gadgets and gauges. I sat on the pilots knee in a 727 lol. A far cry from the blast proof doors they have today. And the smell of cigarette smoke on a plane lol. Sadly Qantas never bought the concorde so I missed out on that.

    Allegedly the flight engineer on the last flight stuffed his hat into the gap formed by the expansion of the aircraft at max speed, when the aircraft cooled down as it slowed down the hat has become stuck, wedged in the gap and the only way to get it out is to fly concorde again at those high speed high temperature cruises

    • @mikecowen6507
      @mikecowen6507 6 λ…„ μ „ +1

      Seniku Moonjewel No, I meant barrel roll, as stated. A barrel roll is a continuous 1G maneuver safe for ANY aircraft. In fact, a passenger, and most aircraft systems would not "feel" that they had even been inverted. Even the toilet works! An aileron roll will impart negative G, and will literally turn things upside down, with everything not strapped down flying about the cabin (including that toilet water!). Yes, know your aircraft maneuvers in spatial terms, but ALSO in terms of how they affect the aircraft and its occupants.

    • @RB747domme
      @RB747domme 4 λ…„ μ „

      Mike Cowen actually, it was an aileron roll not a barrel roll. even Tex Johnston did a video explaining that it was aileron roll. This means it was a 0 g roll meaning that everything in the cockpit has 0 g applied, so that even when upside down, things are neither falling nor being pushed up.

      If you mean like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, to combat the sound of jet-blast from the rear of the engine, Boeing, General Electric, and NASA developed serrated edges called chevrons for the back of the nacelle and the engine exhaust nozzle. The chevrons reduce jet blast noise by controlling the way the air mixes after passing through and around the engine. I hope I helped! Born to fly there's a great video by David Attenborough who talks about where the inspiration for the chevrons came from. They were watching owls, I'm wondering how they could fly so silently at night when they went out to catch their prey. They realised the serrated feathers at the back of the wing and wondered if they played a purpose in reducing the noise turbulence of the air coming off the wing, and so did tests in wind Tunnels and they were proved correct. It's on KRplus somewhere, so search for it.

Here is my advice to you: It's better to remain silent and have everyone think you're an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

      Lovro Komesar And Concorde had a max of 128 seats (usually 92-120), max speed of 1,167kts, turboJET engines (not turboFAN), max weight of over 200 tons and cost roughly Β£23,000,000.

    Everybody: She is set to fly again! But you need to start saving now!
    Upon the fleets' retirements, apparently a private investment group purchased a Concorde, with a view to putting her back on the LHR to JFK business route. She is still undergoing a very lengthy refit, but if the money keeps rolling in she WILL take to the heavens once more. But apparently tickets are going to be many many times more expensive than they ever were. I imagine the roads around Heathrow grinding to a halt on her maiden flight with thousands of eager eyes wanting to catch a glimpse from every possible vantage point. Let's just hope it comes to fruition. And in my lifetime.

      Here you have a nice explanation of the concorde engines: www.saveconcordegroup.co.uk/engines/
      Part 3 explains the reverse thrust. As the concorde engines had no bypass air the hot stream of air was redirected using target-type or bucket thrust reversers behind the engine. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target-type_thrust_reversal
      In comparison, todays high-bypass engines on subsonic airliners usually only redirect the cold bypass air stream with doors on the side of the engines for thrust reversal.

      not really. They are unprofitable for years now and on the day they had to declare bankruptcy, Etihad (major shareholder) decided to cut off their annual funding of AirBerlin's 710 million dollar yearly losses. It's no big surprise in Germany that they failed though. AirBerlin was expected to go bankrupt since at least last summer. Probably one of the reasons their Business took a turn for the worse since last year was the fact that no-one was willing to book any flight well in advance because everyone was afraid they are bankrupt before you fly with them. So they were destined to fail after being mismanaged for at least 10 years, selling off their fleet and having to lease their planes, cancelling massive amounts of flights because they could hardly fund operations. Honestly, I am surprised they made it that long. Didn't think they would still exist in 2017. Furthermore, it is ridiculous that the German taxpayer now has to shell out 150 million for a credit that will never be paid back. But it is general election in September so they probably don't want massive job losses or people not going on vacation cost them any votes. And secondly make it easier for Lufthansa to acquire AirBerlin without having to take over its debt.

It was the first time I'd seen her for real. I was sooo excited. Captain Joe - that was a superb video. You have a very rare talent in that you are able to put across complicated information so that non-pilots such as myself can take it all in. You also manage to make it very entertaining at the same time. Keep up the excellent work!
