@@pian816 if it was just the lights it has almost no effect on the electric bill. Leds consume so little power you save a fraction of a penny every hour a light bulb is off. Less then ten dollars over the entire year if it's a few lightbulbs.

To be fair, modern LED bulbs do consume a negligible amount, like a few cents a day maybe.
Light bulbs don't use that much electricity, especially because most lights are florescent or LED now.

Sounds like he had pretty bad ADHD. Chronically forgets things when he's done with them, gets so absorbed in his computer that he doesn't notice the lights off around him, room a permanent disaster...
That’s what I was thinking.
yesss I understand why it's very annoying for others around him, but I can't help but feel bad for the guy, and I fear people talk about me like that as well. I have pretty bad ADHD too and I always forget to lock up the door, turn off the stove, and such. It always feels fucking awful when people yell at me because of it, like I'M TRYING DUDE.
Of course, in this situation you should talk to a specialist, take medication, etc., but not all of us can do that, it's the most frustrating thing.
I dont know man, maybe the guy is just a SLOB, concidering How his rooms is i go more for it.

Look, I'm not good at sorting wanted clothes, they lay in a pile until I force or coax myself to do something about it. I'm distractable. I often don't do chores bc I don't feel motivated. I don't have ADHD, at least most important issues don't match, I'm as normal as possible. I'm just shit at some things. Some people are great at some things. Even if it was a diagnosis which makes me about bad at this and that (and maybe there is one, I don't care), it wouldn't be a free ticket to being that without guilt. Like, it would be harder for me to turn the lights off, but I would have to be diligent and to do my best to do it.
It isn't a cop out, a cheat which allows me to do whatever, it's a handicap.
They were right to treat Vinnie well bc testing him bad wouldn't help, and would be inhumane. I don't know, maybe Vinnie tried, and of he didn't try, it would be worse.
Vinny reminds me of an old room mate I had. Dude fought me tooth and nail whenever I asked him to help me with cleaning up his mess, and made excuses on why he could not help pay for community items like paper towels. Met his parents and found out they babied him while he grew up. Few years later found out they bought him a house.

YES, knocking on the bathroom door of a stranger's private time is super awkward, specially if you are living in the said stranger's house. If some stranger did that to me in my own house I would feel annoyed. If they knocked a second time I wouldn't answer and even take more time.

I had a similar situation with one of my roommates, living in a shared apartment me + 3 roomies and this one guy just didn't get it. I have no idea if he was trying to *photosynthesis indoors* or if he was afraid of the dark or whatever but he _always_ left the lights on _everywhere_. After like a year me and other two roommates snapped and removed almost every light bulb in the apartment, leaving only the few necessary ones. It took him like two months to figure out our mischief (needless to say, this guy was also a bit dumdum)

This gave me flashbacks from my college years... At one dorm we used to have a bathroom that was basically a closed off corridor in-between two bedrooms that you could lock from inside when you used it. One time we had a neighbor from "the other side" who would go shower late at night, leave the lights on and the door locked. Lockpicking became a valuable skill that year.

The lights in my neighbor's living room is always on at night. Everytime I wake up to go drink some water or something in the middle of the night, it's almost always on, like a constant light source from across the street.
I've literally had that same problem, but like - in a public restaurant. You know how like there are only single bathrooms, and sometimes the door would be shut, and there are lots of people talking, so even if you knock, you'd probably wouldn't hear who's in the bathroom, so it would force you to wait? I've had that problem.
And what's WORSE, you find out that the bathroom was empty the whole time, when another guy casually strolls through, opens the bathroom door, and forces you to wait another long time, while you're cursing yourself, or the restaurant for having a bathroom door that shuts itself when someone exits it.

Most of the time, my family members turn the lights off, but once in a while someone forgets to turn off the bathroom light (very rarely) and somehow it's always at the most inopportune moments
and the feeling of just having to wait for a long-ass time while holding it in is worse than goddamn torture
and the worst thing is that one of my family members actually has stomach-issues so they take a loooong time in the bathroom (even an hour or longer) so there's no way to know if they just forgot to turn the lights off or if they are still in there and of course i don't want to knock on the bathroom, that's just rude as fuck, but if i'm waiting for like 20 minutes i scout out the entire goddamn house and ask everyone for the current locations of other people and if they're all accounted for then i go ahead and knock
that brings me to my question, why didn't you just scout out the apartment to try to find him when he's been there for like 20 minutes, ofc you would bring your friend with you to like so you're not just creeping around somebody else's apartment
that way you don't need to knock so there's no way that you'll make anyone feel bad
