A river in the savanna - Sounds of Africa

  • It's a calm morning by the river Kapamba in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. A few cicadas are winding down their night calls, making room for the daytime sounds of the savanna. The ever-present call of the Cape turtle dove instantly anchors you in the African bush.
The soundscape is nice and even by the river. Birds are calling from trees and bushes nearby, the sounds bouncing back from the treeline and creating a beautiful sense of space. Distant hippos huff and grunt further afield in the Luangwa river, but their sounds barely register so far away. Occasionally some francolin, goose or ibis will be louder than everyone else for a quick second, but then the composition becomes balanced again.
Tying all this together is the calm sound of the river flowing. The Kapamba is one of the quietest rivers I've ever heard. Its flow is by no means small, but the flat landscape and lack of rapids makes it almost silent. You can only hear it if you get close to the edge, which is where I found a bit of driftwood that I planted my microphones on.
Recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi microphones at Kapamba Bush camp, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. Shot with Sony A1 and Sony 100-400 GM. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

One of the best recording of yours in my opinion. So much going on but it doesn’t feel overfilled. In contrary,it feels very harmonious and calm!

Beautiful and very soothing sounds! Although it is just puzzling to me where the Cape Turtle Dove gets its perseverance from, it's crazy

Hey George, this is awesome! I was researching on audio gear and field audio recording and landed on your videos. I like your rationale of getting natural audio by leaving your gear. This recording is great and gives me great childhood memories growing up with these sounds.

Sounds interesting and quite alien! The video is in slow motion, it gives the impression as the sound is slowed down too.

Hello George, I love what you have done here in Zambia - congratulations!
I am just back from a week at Faltdogs Camp in South Luangwa and am putting together a short video of about 15 minutes of video clips I recorded from our tent beside a lagoon within the camp grounds for release on KRplus. I am new to the KRplus video 'game' and hating the sound of my own voice I have put previous videos of Gambian birds to mood-music (search Bob Webzell) For the first of my Zambian videos it would be good to have a natural sound-track as good as yours - I had a heavy cold as I recorded the video and all I hear is my wheezing and coughing!! Is there any way you would permit me to use part of the soundtrack to 'A river in the savannah' to support my virgining project, I would of course give appropriate credit to you for the sound-track. I would love to hear back from you with your response to my request. THANK-YOU Bob
