I had a zoom call with one of the victims last night and they said to NOT send hate or any attention to the lopez brothers. Even if its a hate comment, you're still giving them attention and keeping them relevant. (hence why their comments aren't disabled) The best thing to do is pay them no attention but still keep attention on justice for the victims! Good grief...the more I see, hear and read about teenage girls going through these days...I’m grateful I’m an old lady now and went through my teens in the early 70’s-it was hard enough. Even back then though, without social media, I was groomed and assaulted at age 13..Creeps are gonna be creeps, no matter what era they’re born into. I’ve told my kids about what I went through as a teen and they couldn’t believe that that kind of thing could happen in an upper-class, highly conservative neighborhood...it doesn’t matter. The sad thing is it WILL affect the young girls, in one way or another, for the rest of their lives. Most of it is up to them in how they chose to deal with it..but the first step is telling someone and getting counseling-something I didn’t do for many years, unfortunately. But, once I did, I knew that my experiences MIGHT help a young person avoid some of the messes I got myself into after the assaults. One thing that’s great about the world today is the availability of information. When I was 13, not only did I not know anything about sex; I didn’t even know about menstrual periods! It was TABOO in my family’s religious southern home. When we brought a notice home in about 7th grade that some of these things were going to be talked about in our PE (physical education) class; my mother pulled me out of the school after screaming at them that that was something to supposedly be discussed at home, NOT school.
I guess every era has its drawbacks, good points and bad. But after I went through counseling and decided to become an assault/domestic violence counselor myself, (and this was still BEFORE the internet!); I was actually glad that out of all the young ladies I spoke to over the years-things had changed, a LOT! My view has always been that knowledge is your best armor. When I was 13 and knew absolutely NOTHING-I was just danged lucky I didn’t start my period until I was 19! (I was VERY tiny for my age-in fact, at 13, I looked more like an 8 or 9 year old. And the 21yr old who woo’d me away after I babysat on weekends, would get into major trouble for attempting to assault an 8 year old years later). Education, knowing your body, how things work, knowing your RIGHTs and most of all, what is and isn’t appropriate behavior-are things we should teach our children as soon as they’re old enough to understand-NOT make it “dirty” or taboo. Today it is SO much easier to find age-appropriate materials to help you talk to your children. And while this might be focused on the young girls; if we don’t teach our boys what’s appropriate and what isn’t; give them an education as much as our girls; between the perverts and peer pressure; our boys can end up in trouble too...

I feel bad for Hannah just when she found a man that accepted her for her “flaws” he turns out to not be the good guy after all. Also being tall isn’t a flaw, I’d love to be that tall. So sick. This happens so often. I was on a club swim team when I was younger and was preyed upon by 1 of the coaches there. I always stayed away from him though and nothing ever happened, but I was very lucky. Again in high-school one of the swim coaches who was 21 and I was 17 tried things with me multiple times and at that point I kind of liked him back so probably something would have happened. He had a gf, but he never stopped flirting with me in front of her and I actually found that super disrespectful when I found out they were dating. But what really saved me was a girl who came to one of our home meets. She was a really great swimmer, and had graduated the year before and came to cheer us on and to visit our other coach who by the way was never weird. After I finished a race she came over and congratulated me and we then started talking. She then gave me this huge warning out of nowhere about the 21 year old coach. She told me to stay away from him that they swam for the same club in earlier years and that he took her virginity. I was shocked and just left with this darkness in my heart. After that I never looked at him the same and was always angry towards him. He still tried things with me but one day I cussed him out in front of his gf and everyone and he stopped. I'm crying thinking about how that girl saved me from experiencing what she did and hope that other girls/boys speak up about these issues that happen to them and denounce these predators! I know it takes a lot of courage, but trust me when I tell you it will help you and others. I also was sexually abused when I was a child and spoke about it later in life. The man that hurt me was investigated but hasn't been found/caught, but the relief I felt was so empowering. Prayers to anyone who has experienced this!
