When the Green Knight dismounts, it's the literal sound of a tree falling, he's very brooding and omniscient but with empathetic eyes and the occasional smirk. He was both scary and beautiful. I don't understand why people are saying that you'd never know this is a story in the King Arthur universe. Literally one of the first lines of the movie is about a boy "pulling sword from stone." Then they show a bunch of knights sitting around a circular table... Sword in the Stone? Excalibur? Knights of the round table? Those are literally the most iconic things they could reference from all of the stories.

    • @firstorder438

      Bingo! Its obvious from the start I blame people having the attention span of gnats these days and hollywood churning out dumber and dumber crap to appease every nation on earth. So in turn when we finally get a movie where you have to use even half your brain it overloads the masses.

      relax damn

    • @travesham
      @travesham 2 년 전 +7

      @@Gobbostopper I mean, the film *does* tell you who the guy in the crown is. It just asks you to pay attention. How many stories do you know about a boy who became king by pulling a sword from a stone that don't have anything to do with King Arthur? Because that's in first line of the narration at the very beginning. Once you've heard that line, then you see knights sitting at a round table, a wizard, and then the importance they put on the king's sword, the context clues should be pretty obvious.
      At the very least, I wish reviewers saved that information for a spoiler section of the review, because it was clearly an intentional decision by the filmmaker to *not* specifically name these things and trust the audience to put it together.

    This movie is a grower. I was thrown off because after a certain point it diverts really far from the source material - the original poem “Sir Gawain & the Green Knight,” but I really liked the darker & more contemporary approach. The poem is lighter and has a humorous side to it where this movie chose a darker path and I’m appreciating it the more I think about it.
    Also, David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story” that you mention is one of the greatest movies of the past decade. Like “The Green Knight,” it’s really slow and not something you just pop in to enjoy. You have to sit with it and be patient, but the reward is tremendous.

      @@3darkdescents537 I agree. Everything that wasn't in the original story felt like filler, because they did very little to integrate any of it with the themes. The thief went nowhere. The giant went nowhere. There was no rhyme or reason to the girdle being recovered randomly by the lady at the castle. The fox didn't end up mattering at all.

    • @cool_sword
      @cool_sword 2 년 전 +7

      @@killingmewillnotbringbacky9177 Late reply, sorry. The fox represents the mother, and femininity is a theme of the movie or alternatively you have the idea of the mother testing Gawain. The following isn't my theory, but the sequence with the giants could represent Gawain attempting to stand on the shoulders of giants, his mother (the fox) preventing him from doing so, and instead having to follow in their footsteps. I won't take a shot at the thief since I'll admit I don't really "get" film myself and rely on others' analyzes. That doesn't mean the fox and the giants add to the story, but a film doesn't have to represent a story at all, the same way paintings or sculptures don't have to represent anything real on their face. I think a lot of moviegoers forget that when criticizing films, and I'm saying that as a person who doesn't get film, so please don't think I'm talking down to you. Movies tend to very much hold the audiences hand (the old person in me thinks that trend has increased in the past couple of decades), but artsy ones often don't, and I think that gets confused with them being nonsense. My half baked idea is that Lowery was trying to play with the theme of heroism as much as the story of the myth itself, so every scene clearly progressing the story wasn't the goal. Instead of progressing the story, the fox and the giant instead develop the themes of the movie.

The pacing is not great, lingers too much on scenery etc for my tastes, but I didn't find it too detracting. I don't think it ever meanders to the point of boredom, at least not for me and I have a fairly short attention span for artistic movies. Dev was amazing and I'd love to see him in more leading roles like this. In general I just want more movies like this. It wasn't quite what I was hoping for in that it leaned a little too into the 'indie art film' side of things. The dialogues were unnecessarily slow.
      It reminds me of a story about the Spartans (who were known for their laconic prose).
      Two foreign diplomats went to Sparta to ask for help in the form of grain.
      The Spartans asked them what they wanted. The two diplomats made a long eloquent speech about their hardships, etc.
      The Spartans replied, your question was so long that we forgot the first half, and as such we were not able to make sense of the second.
      Dissapointed the two diplomats left, and then returned to Sparta with an empty grain sack. The one diplomat held up the sack and said, "bag needs grain".
      The Spartans replied, you didn't need to say "bag".
      This movie is incoherent because the dialogues have very long pauses in between sentences.
      By the time the next sentence is spoken, the previous is already forgotten, and as such one can not make sense of the dialogues.

That scene is present but they never directly state anything of it's supposed origin and while you might think every human on the planet knows of said legend, fact of the matter is that while it is insanely popular, not everyone knows it to enough of a degree to pick up on that straight away. I can assure you that if they were to avoid using the round table a lot of people wouldn't even know what this is all about EVEN with Merlin. Great review of a movie I look forward to. I read the late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance this movie is based on - Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - in the late 1970s, when I was engrossed in early English literature.The translation I read was by a certain Professor Tolkien (and E V Gordon) ....and I then read LOTR. So, interesting you reference the excellent movie adaptation.

He seemingly fails all but one in the film, whereas it's the opposite in the poem
